I'm kind of embarrassed to admit this, but I got huge problems when trying to replace the file on my Macbook. I deleted the file, but got errors when I was copying the new file. In the end Finder wouldn't respond or relaunch or anything. I restarted and couldn't log in, so I thought I'd start from the Leopard disc and use Time Machine to restore the file.

Unfortunately, neither the Leopard or the Tiger disc seems to want to boot. I get a blue screen and the spinning wheel from time to time. The cursor is only visible for a couple of seconds.

I'd heard about problems starting with the Leopard disc, so I thought I'd install Tiger on one of my external drives and fix the problem after booting from it, but as it is now, I can't seem to do that either.

I would be very grateful if someone could give me some pointers. Maybe I should just go to a store that sells Macs and use one of theirs to install on an external ;)

A friend of mine had the exact same problem. We tried booting into single user mode to copy the new file into the system folder, but its read only in S.U.M. and we couldnt do it. Our other option was to boot into firewire disk mode and access it through, but didnt have access to one.
Finally, we did an archive install to fix the problem, if all else fails, thats what Id do if i was you.

Or if you want to safely do this (sorta), you could just go into System Prefs->Appearance. Then change the first drop down from blue to graphite. That will pretty much get rid of all the aqua stuff and make it more grey. The scroll bars don't look exactly like the hacked ones here, but they are not aqua. The three buttons in all windows are not colored anymore either.

They are aqua. And that means giving up colour everywhere else.

Well I guess the meaning of "aqua", at least to me, is more the blueness of it. That obviously is up to interpretation though. I never said that my post was a way of doing what was described in this thread exactly. Just a way of getting rid of the blue scroll bars, while also losing the colored buttons. I personally don't use the grey "theme" and just thought I would give up the info in case someone else here does not mind losing more colors just to get rid of the blue scroll bars without hacking the OS.

anyone have a link to the original directions? the link from post 1 is down.

Navigate to here, probably easiest to copy the string below and use the cmd+shift+g Finder shortcut

/System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/HIToolbox.framework/Versions/A/Resources/

Delete Extras.rsrc (PPC) or Extras2.rsrc (Intel) -- (make a backup first)

Then move the new one in there from the downloaded folder. (It says you just have to copy one, the relevant one, but i did both without harm). For me i just copied over and it didn't work so do delete it first.

Then restart Finder and any programs you have open.

I know I'll get stoned for making this comment . . . . but

With all the real problems in OS 10.5 the color of the slider seems a little trivial.

Who said the scrollbars were a "problem". We're just trying to make Leopard visually better while we deal with the REAL problems. At least we'll feel a little better not to have to use Apple's UGLY scrollbars

ok, here's my probelm

I made the backup, but my computer is not letting me delete the file. It says it's in use.

furthermore, it wont let me drag the new one to replace the old one into the folder.

Now I restored the original file back into the folder, but now I have a copy of it in my trash and i cant delete it.

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm an idiot, I didnt give myself permission to read/write the folder.

Why can't you put the new one in?

To be able to empty the trash you will have to restart/log out.

Edit: See you sorted it out.

I got the exact same thing and I've just had to re-install all of Tiger.

God sakes.

Exactly. The new GUI that Leopard pushes is great, but the old Aqua scroll bars just didn't fit in. But the newer iTunes 7 scroll bars just look perfect with the rest of the GUI.

I have to admit, it really does look better now. I don't think it's perfect (the window resizer really looks bright now) but it definitely fits better than Aqua did. Now if we can only get the jelly buttons (Cancel, OK) to be flat (Time Machine preference pane).

If you don't like the aqua blue highlight color do this: System Preferences > Appearance > Highlight Color: > Other ... I just found that the blue highlight color in Finder and Mail really didn't go so I made it a slightly lighter shade of the scrollbars.

Also, there is a perfectly good reason to allow Safari to continue running with no windows ... Downloads.

gooooorgeeeousssssssss

im in love with the guy/gal who created this, now everything just feels all tied together in a nice little leopard bundle

by changing the highlight color to graphite it really makes everything look amazing...when i first changed the scroll bars the other aqua elements really stood out, so when i changed it it all looked 110% better, i highly recommend it

wow, I had done this so long ago, I had forgotten about the aqua scroll bars until I saw this thread pop up again

I gave my old PowerBook to my sister for her birthday (with Leopard) and I replaced these before I even gave it to her (as well as the dock I use)
