A 2 gig machine is gonna be snappy no matter what, no? Still, sounds very cool.

I have some concerns about quick view lagging. Problem?

Do you mean CoverFlow view in Finder, or QuickLook as in pressing the space bar in Finder to see the contents of a file?

Neither lag much. The CoverFlow view lags a little, but as far as I'm concerned, it's due to loading the icons and contents from the hard drive, not with processor power.

I think we will see a huge improvement with full NAND flash hard drives ;)

Exciting! Just 2 more days until I can get my hands on this! Only thing that worries me is Filemaker Pro compatibility for my work machine and... front row uncertainty for my home machine...

Is front row working on your ppc laptop lamina? I hacked it to run on my powermac at home, and want it to JUST WORK with leopard!

-Thanks

nice background, (hardcore H3 player here) does it have the unified look across everything? I'm really digging the new desktop!, the blue apple in tiger looks so old now... i cant wait to do a A/I this weekend hopefully...

You bet FrontRow 2 works. And it's awesome. Really. Even on this old G4

The unified look is perfect across all applications, Apple or not.

Thanks for the post.
We have the same PowerBook and I was wondering how it would run.

I'm bringing my PowerBook into work tomorrow and as soon as they deliver 10.5 I'm doing an erase and install.

Thanks for your posts.

Are the fans running all the time?
Problems with the upgrade?
Lost any setting?
Is resizing of the windows smooth or stepwise?
Can you set the dock preferences to 2D even if in the bottom?
How long did it take to install?
And to index?
Is dashboard faster to load than Tiger?
And expose?

Thanks in advance for the answers..

Front Row

Hey there,

Thanks for all the great info regarding leopard on the G4. I have a couple of G4 at home (Mac Mini 1.42 and iBook 1.42). I use the mini as a media center and I was wondering if 3rd Party Remote Controls (Keyspan Front Row Remote) work with Leopard?. Since the G4s don't include the front row remote, do any hacks need to perform for the remote to work or does it just work?

Also, have you tried installing Perian Codecs? Does front row 2 work with them? Thanks in Advance :).

I have installed the Perian codecs, and they work fine with QT. I haven't thought to try it out with Front Row yet. When I get home, I will try it out.

I don't know about the remote thing with Front Row, as I don't have a remote. However, thankfully, Front Row works really well on my G4.

Keep the questions coming, people. I'm done exmas now so ask away. I will peel myself from my Xbox360 and check this thread every hour or so.

Thanks for your posts.

Are the fans running all the time?

No different than before. I can rarely hear them, so it's hard to tell.

Problems with the upgrade?

None on my CD iMac. I did an erase and install on my PB.

Lost any setting?

None on the iMac. Not applicable to the PowerBook since I did a fresh install.

Is resizing of the windows smooth or stepwise?

Resizes like butter.

Can you set the dock preferences to 2D even if in the bottom?

Unfortunately, no. You need to use the command line to do that.

How long did it take to install?
And to index?

1 hour to install fresh on PowerBook, 40 minutes on iMac. Indexing on my PB took quite a while... a couple hours. May be due to the fact that it was indexing my external 500GB drive as well.

Is dashboard faster to load than Tiger?

Heck yes.

And expose?

Works the same as in Tiger.

You're welcome.

For everyone talking about your performance, can you say whether you did a clean install, Archive & Install, or Upgrade? Thanks!

The CoverFlow view in Finder works very very well, but I notice a bit of load time for the icons. This is likely due to the fact that it's loading data off of a hard drive, and not to do with processor speed.

Although I wonder how the pitiful 167MHz frontside bus is limiting my performance with CoverFlow in Finder...

Anyway..

Safari also seems a lot more 'at home' in Leopard. It also runs a bit faster than in Tiger, but that might be due to the fact that my Leopard install is only a few hours old. It may also be due to the fact that I am absolutely ecstatic about Leopard right now.

I do notice the new Dock is a little buggy with magnification. It seems where the dock ends, about half way up the icons, the icons get split when moving quickly from left to right or vice versa. I see this as a small bug that will likely be fixed with 10.5.1.

The screensavers perform exceptionally well... far beyond what I expected. Although, there is a pretty decent video card in my PowerBook.

One more thing...

I should give the specs of my PowerBook.

17" 1.67GHz PowerBook Last rev, purchased March 13, 2006
2GB DDR2 RAM
120GB HDD
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9700

I apologize for the disorganization of my thread.

Movies work perfectly. Wow. I wish I had a remote.

Front Row 2 is phenomenal.

Question to OP -

Did your Core Duo get faster too, or only the G4?

I don't use the iMac much, but my brother reports no increase in speed... he doesn't really do much that demands speed though... mainly MSN and the sort... he's 16.

Can someone let me in on the joke?

OP: Thanks for the head's up for us PPC users.

It's a MacRumors meme.

That sounds like a generalisation to me; I'm 16 and do far more than MSN... I use Skype too.

Also, thanks for all the info, I'm quite looking forward to installing Leopard on this machine now. :D
