Facetime is just another of Apple's failures... throw it on the pile with MobileMe, FinalCut X, Mini Displayport, iOS5/iCloud (when released :p)... etc etc.

I actually see iOS 5 and iCloud being pretty successful. I'm looking forward to both.

I have not used it

I have not used FaceTime. No family/friends have a device to use FaceTime with. I would use it if they ever purchased a device that supports it.

This is entirely Apple's decision.

What like the hotspot feature which o2 block unless you pay extra.

I have a feeling even if Apply did allow it over 3G the likes of o2 and other carriers in the UK will try and charge extra for it.

What makes it worse is I can get a Android phone with the hotspot feature built in and using the same sim card it'll work fine yet on the iPhone my carrier won't allow it.

As for Facetime as it currently stands.. I use it multiple times a week with by father, wife and daughters. I guess it depends on your lifestyle/job. Mine has me travelling around the country for work so it's nice to stay in touch with everyone and see the kids etc before they go to bed.

I used to use it, but not via my iPhone. The video was too grainy on 3G so I only used it on my Mac.

I rarely use it. My wife just doesn't want to see my face when I call her.:( The only time I really use it is when I travel to see and talk to my wife and kids. I've been using a portable hotspot mifi since before the iPhone 4, and with my latest 4G upgrade, it works great with FaceTime. Can't wait to use it at the Oracle world conference in October. I just hope they have a good LTE signal. Last year I had a 3G mifi, and worked good for me. I didn't mind all the skipped frames. At least I could see my wife and kids.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_4 like Mac OS X; en-gb) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8K2 Safari/6533.18.5)

I use it nightly with the mother. it's always good to say goodnight to her face to face (virtually speaking)

Just because you don't use it, doesn't make it a failure.

I use it multiple times a day. In fact, I just got off a FaceTime call.

Lol no one I know uses it on a regular basis for anything serious and allot of people can't find "the facetime app" not understanding its built into the dialer on the iPhone but an app on the Mac and iPod touch. I haven't really used it but I probably will to better stay in contact with my girlfriend/friends when I'm gone for a bit. I just think the whole wifi only thing creates a restriction. Like allot of the times when I call someone with an iPhone they aren't hooked to wifi. I love the concept though it just needs cross platform compatibility with an official application on Android, Windows Mobile, Blackberry, etc. and of course more phones need to support the concept and mobile networks need to be strengthened up. Verizon seams to be boosting network speeds in my area exponentially lately so we will see.

To be honest I have never used FaceTime once... I have used the camera to take pictures of myself... (I know).

I use Skype all the time as half my family live in Italy and are not able to use FaceTime on their device... Unless I buy them all Apple devices which is not going to happen.

Yup but only from phone to my laptop at home, when more people I know upgrade maybe I'll use it more, but the killer for me would be if I could use it to contact people on a PC or other type of phone i.e Blackberry or Android

Don't use it a bunch, but it is awesome having it when I'm traveling or when my wife is away for most of the day working. Mine is set up to use on 3G so if I am out late and want to see my girl on my wife's MBP or iPhone, I can step out of the room for a few minutes and tell her good night on a video call.

Before I had my little girl, I would probably never use it though.

I've used it a few times and it was handy when I did. If they can get it to work outside of wifi I can see it being used a lot more often.

Are you suggesting getting rid of it? Why?

I didn't go through all 7 pages of this, just the first and last. But I saw the same thing on both; "i would use it if it worked over 3g :( ".

Tango is a free app that works cross platform and can be used over 3g connections. I used it on my Atrix to make video calls to friends/family that have the iP4.

If I go with the iP5, I will certainly use FT and Tango or Qik (skype) when not on wifi.

I use it at least once a week and the usage is going up. My daughter, who lives with her mom 150 miles away) has an iPod touch and we use it to talk to each other at least once a week.

My GF just got an iPhone last week and we live almost an hour away so we have used it a couple of times already.

O2 is only able to do that because Apple allows them to.

Apple allows each carrier to specify which features are and aren't allowed to be used for a specific user.

If Apple releases a software update for the iPhone through iTunes that allows users to make Facetime calls over 3G (or 2G) then there isn't anything that a carrier like AT&T or O2 can do to stop it.

The only way the carriers can really block it is:

a) By convincing Apple not to put the feature in (which works very well!)
b) Blocking the feature over their network
c) Putting terms in the contracts with their customers that say they do not allow users to use said feature.

As a little FYI, all current O2 iPhone tariffs include tethering at no extra charge.

I use Facetime atleast 4 times a week. Mostly with my wife so I can see the kids when I'm at work but use it sometimes with one of my friends I don't get to see in person very often.
