....and now my girlfriend, who is an IT major, wants to use my computer to "learn" how to do data recovery on Macs.

So, the question is: how the **** do I delete any traces of websites viewed and porn downloaded before I give my laptop to her?

I'm talking temporary files, db files, caches, the works - everything. This bitch is gonna tear my **** up if she catches me looking at porn.

I've reset Safari and deleted all porn from my computer, but there's still got to be files that show I've viewed porn right? How the **** do I get rid of those?

I'm on 10.6.

Thanks for helping a brother out!

Lol - if she is an IT Major I would be doing a whole new clean install with a new HD :D

All the makings of a fantastic man and a even better relationship.

You need to reset your browsers to clear cache and such. If you're downloaded videos best do a spotlight search for all possible video files and delete that. I would then go into your library/application support and make sure there's not a little folder plopped in there by some app that would normally be found on a porn site that had to be downloaded to view the videos. I would go into keychain and delete references to saved passwords to such sites.

I would then recommend letting your girl know that you watch porn. Why you may ask? Frankly, as a girl who wouldn't be fond of the idea that someone close to her was watching porn, I think it's a topic that has to be discussed and she has to give a little. It sounds though that you're young and you have little respect for her anyway so who knows what is in store for you.

Do a 35 pass erase on your hard drive, via Disk Utility :D

Okay. But I'd rather not delete all my files. Can I remove just the temp files (where are they at?) and then do a 35 pass erase without wiping the harddrive of the files I want to keep?

Tell her you don't want her messing with your mac. Or wipe that harddrive and start fresh and porn-free because she may just find little tidbits to give it away.

Ah, the best of advice is often that which isn't the most fun, or what we want to hear. Good advice. Probably unheeded.

As for what's in store? A bag of hurt.

1. Make a time machine backup of your computer

2. Insert your OS X DVD and secure-erase your hard drive. This will take a long time, and if it doesn't, you're doing it wrong.

3. Restore your computer using the time machine backup.

4. Download a LOT of large files (maybe some ISO's or legal movies in HD), and basically attempt to fill up your hard drive. This will overwrite the sectors again, so it doesn't look like you just secure-erased your hard drive.

5. Delete the files, then download a lot of crap. Small downloads, documents, photos, etc. Delete them. These will be the files your girlfriend is going to "find".

I think that'll work. The most important part is zeroing the drive (step 2) and giving her dummy files so she doens't know you just erased your drive (step 5).

zero out your free space using Disk Utility. this will make files you have deleted unrecoverable without deleting your data. zero out and 7 pass is fine, 35 pass is a bit over the top.

theres also porn caches in the Macromedia folder in your home Preferences directory from all the tube sites youve checked out.

I didn't even think about that...

Hmm... Good thing I keep and look at all my porn on one computer... :D

Dude, please! get real, its your life you can do wth you want with it! this aint no time to start getting all ***** whipped;)

BUT anyhoo, I'd tell her to get her own mac to practice on, because you need your mac to watch porn on:)

But surely a completely "squeaky clean" computer is just as bad?

I'd reformat as suggested above, reinstall and leave a few pics hanging around… seriously. A male computer user, still alive below the belt, with no porn on the drives?
Veeeery suspicious.

Good luck
;)

I wonder if she would be disappointed in not finding any lol!:p

1) Transfer your ******** of porn to a portable HD and store it safely elsewhere (wherever your Playboys are if you roll old school).

2) Follow above steps

3) Plug in your HD whenever you want ("plug and play").

With this I truly agree to both points. A clean computer is suspect and if you think a guy isn't going to have porn then you're mistaken. Like I said, not being a huge fan of the idea, I also understand it. I won't go into details on how I manage it in any relationship I may have, but there is one thing I do know ... if you're not happy with what I do for you then you can find someone else. ;)

Sorry jessica. but that was like me giving you advice on makeup, relationships, or any other thing men no nothing about, you're totally missing the point. The woman in our life has nothing to do with our "other" needs. The two MUST co-exist. It's the yin and yang, the Jedi and the Dark Side, the Seinfeld and Newman...:p

Why would you even consider giving up your computer? What will you use then?

Tell her to get her own computer!

This thread is hilarious, so much trouble, is she worth it? I mean you can tell her you watch porn, she probably knows that already, 101% of men watch porn. The ones that say they don't are liars. If she doesn't understand, well get another girlfriend, the one you can watch porn with. :)

The Ross and Rachel, the peanut butter and the jelly, the salt and the pepper, the JD and the Elliot.

My machines are totally clean lol, those porn sites can let some bad viruses in and for me it aint worth it.

But what you do for fun is up to you:)
