Nope, this is just conspiracy theory and I don't believe any of it.

Siri is proof otherwise. They rushed Siri to market.

Edit: and it's not putting all of your eggs in one basket. There are always projects incubating at different stages. They have schedules and planned release dates to coincide with certain models. There are probably projects in progress now that won't be ready until 2013 and others in 2014. Sometimes they slip. this is how it works at most companies. But if you think they hold them back just to sell them in the next model, you're just buying into a buch of conspiracy theory bunk.

Not conspiracy theory bro, just business.

Well, lets put it this way. If Apple's techs couldnt figure out how to put MMS, copy/paste and recently LTE in their phone, they are incredibly stupid and should be fired immediately. Unless you have another explanation why these features were not on a supposed high end device like an iphone when bargain basement phones had them.

Let's not forget it took them like a year to make a white iPhone. They are not dumb. They knew that people who wanted the white one would buy the black one anyway and then fork over another $500 when the white one came out.

I'd imagine all the usual stuff... better camera, faster processor/more RAM, more storage. Probably NFC.

I don't think they'll push the screen past 4", they're probably more likely to introduce a second model with a larger screen.

You apparently missed all the issues they had with the paint on the white iPhone. Again, due to Jobs not being happy with the outcome. NOT to get people to buy yet another phone.

One thing the internet always loves is a conspiracy, even when none exist.

The feature I'd like, but already know the answer to, is to offer replaceable batteries and have easy access to the battery compartment to extend daily use without daily charging (I'd even pay for these batteries).

I'm curious to see what features people think were held back from the iPhone 4 when it first launched…

None. I think Apple prefers to wait till feature x is fleshed out well enough for public consumption.

And Siri is beta for a good reason. It needed to be fed with information to be a better product for version 1.0. It was a starting point, not the destination. People will better appreciate this as time moves on.

What apple will hold back from the 5

- new 128GB option (4S introduced 64GB)
- quad core CPU
- 1GB RAM
- 12mp camera

Issues with the 5 ironed out

Basically, what should have been the 5 in the first place

The majority of people going 5s 1 year from now will be those whose 4s contract just ended. No extra feature is really necessary. :p

Do you rally think they couldn't figure it out? I'm sure it was more likely an access issue with AT&T. Not really sure. But to assume they held it back to sell later phones is laughable. Look bad today to sell more phones later? Not a good decision.

Copy/paste was probably a design issue. I'm guessing they brought many implementations to Jobs before he signed off on one and felt it was "Apple" style. Who knows.

I agree MMS, copy/paste and the white iPhone were held back because of design issues rather than to push sales at different time points. MMS and copy/paste are definitely poor examples as they're only software and could be added to older iPhones. Apple even admitted copy/paste took longer to implement than anticipated (at least to their satisfaction). But that doesn't mean they hold back other features especially until "S" refreshes.

They absolutely don't put all their eggs in one basket and there are many good examples of this. Was there any reason for the original iPad not to include a camera? Did that need to be fleshed out well enough for public consumption?

Until we see what's officially on the next iphone, we can't even begin to speculate on what might be held back.

I always thought mms and copy/paste weren't included simply for the fact that apple isn't a cell phone company. I don't know if Jobs was a heavy mms user, but if he wasn't why would he consider mms to be a priority? The issue was probably the same with copy/paste.
LTE, on the other hand, has more to do with the fact that it sucks power. If you don't want to be like those android phones with a short amount of battery life, you wait until you can put in a bigger battery or LTE takes less power. Apple engineers can't control what those LTE chips do and there's only so much they can do to advance the evolution of battery life.

I personally thought the camera on the ipad looked stupid, but I understand why apple capitulated to pressure on it. We'll probably never know if they held back on putting a camera on the first gen ipad in the first place.

Sure. For the G1 iPad, internally Apple probably thought people generally would not take pictures with a tablet.

It's odd. Every time I see someone do it I think WTF. I've done it and think WTF.

Also, it's a given that the iPad is a success today, but back when it was first released it was uncharted waters so who knew what worked, what didn't and what users wanted to do with their iPad.

I think it will a typical "S" Version:
-better Camera (12MP etc.)
-better Video (2160p aka 4K)
-Quadcore A6 like in the 4th Generation iPad
-better Battery Life
-better speakers
-faster cellular

Those are mobile advancements that come with time.

It would be silly for anyone to say Apple is holding those "features" back on purpose.

My guess would be NFC. I'm not sure why they'll hold it back, but I think they might. I think most stores don't give access to it and for me it's basically useless, but if an iPhone had an NFC chip that would be the biggest push the technology will ever get. Stores would be clamoring to install NFC readers (or whatever) in their checkout lines. Tons of people already have it in Android phones, but Apple just has that power over the market and I think NFC won't get big until Apple jumps in.

I'm torn on buying a 5 or 5S though.. I get bored with technology sort of, and I always want the newest design, but everything is so much better when they stick that S on the end.... I'm not on a contract (using Straight Talk) so I guess I could buy both, but that seems like a waste of money.

I feel like they've been holding out on this since the 4S....

From what we've all seen of the new phone and iOS6, I frankly am not that interested in what the iPhone 5S will have. Probably something that other phones will have had for 2 years at that point, just like always.

I think with the new case design and small 16:9 screen, this is as far as Apple is going with the hardware outside of internals upgrading. ...and iOS6... yawn to the 10th power.

I don't think they ever hoLd back a feature unless it's simply not ready.

Actually, they have a long history of holding back and later billing an item as a must-have feature.

Underclocking older Macs and then selling the exact same product a year later as a speedy, must-have upgrade comes to mind.

Yeah, how dare they give us the retina display in place of a bigger screen.
The rub, see, is that Apple could have done both. When the 4 came out, everyone else was going 4.3". I was astonished that big 'ol Apple kept 3.5" and just now, begrudgingly, 2 years later, goes 16:9 but same small 2" width.

I honestly just want better battery life. I have a 4S and I had a 4 previously and I wish I waited, because the battery life of the 4S has been atrocious. I am hoping some combination of IGZO screen, bigger battery, and a possible LTE off switch will allow me to gain back some of the hours I have lost, maybe even IOS6 polishes up some battery life as well....

I am going to watch the even closely, and decide if its worth money out my pocket since I am in contract, but I am not thrilled with my 4S at the moment.
