Thanks for your thoughts and the previous post too. I am still none the wiser on which direction to go in, but I enjoyed reading your experience/perspective.
In addition to the same old problem after waking from sleep, I've noticed another issue.
Cold booting and with two monitors connected, the nMP will attempt to activate the LG, but then displays the login screen on on my secondary rotated display. Doesn't look like OS X waits long enough to get a signal before it is excluded as a display. When logging in, it again attempts to wake the LG, and excludes it. The display then goes to sleep.
Waking the display from sleep doesn't help. I need to turn the monitor off, and turn it on, waiting through the long startup sequence. But only *after* I'm completely logged in. Once done, the nMP finally finds the monitor, and switches my apps and dock to the LG, which is my OS X-designated primary monitor.

I don't tend to put the computer in to sleep mode. I did with my old cheese grater Mac Pro because it took so long to start up, however the nMP boots so quickly that I don't see the need. However, I tried a quick test. I put the computer to sleep, left it for 5 mins (it had definitely gone to sleep!) and then woke it up and the LG fired back up again straight away. That's just one isolated test so I'll try it again over the weekend. So far, so good though.

Hi I've just downloaded the 10.0.3 update and am still showing 50hz (dual 700's) am I missing something? Neither the displays prefs or Switchresx show me 3200x1687 at 60hz

I guess you meant 10.10.3?
I wonder if it's got something to do with SwitchResX? I didn't buy the LG until 10.10.3 had been released so didn't have any need to install SwitchResX - the monitor achieved 60Hz automatically out of the box at all scaled resolutions I tried (including the one you're using).
Might worth uninstalling the unneeded extra software, if you can?

sorry i haven't followed up in a while, but LG hasn't responded since my last missive. not that i'm surprised.
i tend to agree that apple's choice to amend their compatibility to "most 4K monitors" is a shady move. all they've done is remove the responsibility of specifically claiming compatibility with the LG31MU97.
if i were a conspiracy-minded person, i'd find it curious that this happened among spiking reports of issues.
glad most folks don't seem to be having them. if LG would even dignify my email with a response i'd be willing to try a new one and see if indeed i randomly got two bad ones, but i find that rather hard to believe.
if i hear more, you guys will be the first to know!

Apple 4k guide (online) & the de-naming of the LG/4k.
Was in one of the major Apple Stores a few days ago. They have had one nMP(6) there, hooked up to various UHD monitors, since it was released. But now it was set with just a couple of Thunderbolt models. Asked one of the (more experienced) Genius guys about this. He said they had tried the LG-31MU97 monitors recently, but that they were nixed "because of all the problems". (However, I never saw them there).
Since he was checking his internal cheat-sheet, I was also curious to know if the nMP(6) could drive two of the Dell 5k/60Hz external monitors (2/cables) under Yosemite 10.10.03 - Especially since it has three TB2 busses. But, after about 20 minutes of talking to his support engineers, he still had no answer to that question.
But I guess such issues are far from the concerns of most punters.

Are you using the included Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable or HDMI? HDMI 1.4 is limited to 30Hz and should not be used with a Mac Pro. Only HDMI 2.0 supports 60Hz, but none of the HDMI equipped computers from Apple support HDMI 2.0.

Another week has passed and so far so good. No visual glitches despite having two LG 31MU97's connected to my Mac Pro (D700), no problems at boot time, no problems waking from display sleep (my Mac Pro is set to not sleep). I have one Rev 1 display and one Rev 2 display, but the USB uplink is not working on either one. I really want to figure this out because it's also prevents me using the built in calibration features, and I can't connect USB devices to the display.
No I'm using Thunderbolt, and yes using SwitchResX with the custom file, if I remove that I can get 60hz but only at a max of 3840 x2160 in the apple display panel (stretched to the full width) so the proportions are wrong, Ideally I'm trying to get 3200x1687 @ 60 hz

No boot screen with this monitor
Using SwitchResX to get a display that I can read and that's fine. However, I don't get the standard MacOS startup screen on bootup. See nothing until the desktop appears. Any way to fix that? Also, when waking from sleep, touching the keyboard or my trackball no longer works. I have to use the "nipple" on the monitor to wake it up. Any help appreciated

Having contacted the amazing Stephane at SwitchresX yesterday he worked away this morning (Sunday!) on the problem and created a new file which has solved the problem. If you're using SwitchresX just put this file in the:
System/Library/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-1e6d folder.
Make sure it's called: DisplayProductID-76e7 and saved as a text file (just remove the TXT suffix when you put it in the folder)
This will allow you to have all the resolutions at 60Hz scaled and native, rather than just the max 4096 x 2160 one.
I've noticed a massive difference in the smoothness of scrolling windows around and moving the mouse.
I'd advise getting the full paid version of SwitchresX as you can save the settings and have different resolutions automatically for different apps, I've found this great for some which don't seem very scaled res friendly.
No connection to the company just a very happy punter!

I don't use SwitchResX as I only bought the LG after OS X 10.10.3 came out and I've noticed that ever since the 10.10.3 Supplemental Update that I'm now seeing the boot screen. I was very surprised to see the black screen and Apple logo come back as I felt sure that it would have required a firmware update to achieve that.
It looks to me like SwitchResX was a great piece of software to have installed before 10.10.3 came out, but now that Apple have (finally) resolved the problems it might be an idea to see if you can remove it (unless you want to use some of it's special features that aren't in OS X)?

I thought the same thing about SwitchResX after getting 10.10.3, but within a few reboots my retina iMac with 4 connected LCD's switched to mirror mode like it did in the past on previous versions of 10.10, so I had to go back to using SwitchResX with my saved settings for all 4 extra LCD's.

Fair point about the iMac. I suppose I was only thinking about the nMP when I wrote that, but even then everyone's set up is different whatever machine you've got. I guess it's worth bearing in mind that SwitchResX could be worth removing if you have problems that should be fixed in 10.10.3 as you can always re-install it.
Indeed, lots of things should be fixed in 10.3 but in the end SrX does what I need it to do to get back to work and can you imagine getting almost instant support and software patches from Apple on a Sunday morning!

Fair point. 10.10.3 is giving me everything I need, however I can see that SwitchResX is useful in some circumstances. I don't want to say anything negative about the software as the developer is obviously a top bloke and going out of his way to support the community. I was only suggesting that due to the changes in 10.10.3 it's worth trying systems without SrX installed to see if any problems experienced in previous releases of OS X (that warranted installing it in the first place) have gone away.

My new? LG31MU97-B arrived yesterday and I set it up today.
Using supplied mDP-DP lead and following instructions. Great - for 15minutes.
The display now does not turn off but the screen goes black for a couple of second and then returns - repeat.
Until I have finished trying all options I shall not comment on this - BUT - there are a few things that make me a little uncomfortable about the actual product I have received.
More news later.

Does the blacking out only happen sporadically, every 15 minutes or so? That's the behavior I noticed with this display back when I first made the post. Sucks to see it's still going on with 10.10.3.

I'm so sorry to hear you're having issues, Sharkey.
It's really odd that some people are having problems (Sharkey, Zorn and dargenergymedia amongst others) while some of us are having no issues and working away quite happily on what, on the face of it, are similar systems.
I wonder if it's worth trying to collate some clear data on this one? If we can pull together a list of what systems we've got, basic information about what's plugged in to them and anything else anyone can suggest that might be relevant then we can try to look for any trends - if there are any.
Let's face it. It's most likely to be the LG that's at fault, but it could just as easily be the cabling or the computer. Is it a particular graphics card? Perhaps a batch of Mac Pros that were built around the same time?
I'm happy to pull the information together as it's posted and then report back, but it'll only be worth doing if we can get a reasonable number of people willing to participate. Plus we need people with dodgy experiences and, crucially, those who are having no issues at all to take part in (fairly) equal numbers to give us good data.
I was thinking perhaps:
Computer model and spec (inc processor, graphics cards, RAM)
Delivery date of computer if a nMP (you never know!)
What's plugged in to each Thunderbolt port
Version of LG monitor (non -B or -B)
For those that are having issues, the problems you're experiencing (with profanities removed)
How about relevant software installed? (e.g. SwitchResX)???
There's probably other stuff that we could write down that may or may not help to identify a trend.
Or is this a nuts idea that will just waste everyone's time...? 🙄
Tried this file, my mid 2014 retina MBP still doesn't have 4096 x2160, in either system panel or SwitchResX. 🙁

Firstly thanks to AJC for letting me have his setup info and for the commiserations of Zorn.
I am at the moment trying all of the TB ports in turn with only my mouse directly into the MP and keyboard on Bluetooth. When complete I shall post results and system details as per AJC's suggestion (which is great BTW).
This particular screen is going back tomorrow whether I get it working or not.
The reasons follow.
Packaging was very poor and been opened before delivery and resealed.
Supplied cables had been removed from their sealed bags (2) and put in document bag - torn bags screwed up and in box.
Paperwork in box was wrinkled on had obviously been folded and unfolded many times.
31MU97-B was ordered and the 31MU97 was delivered despite inside the box being printed with REV-02.
Screen packaging had been removed and replaced previously/ marks (smudges) on the screen itself and one small scratch.
Back of screen had a scratch and the mounting screws were too short (the end being tapered to assist location did not bite into the frame)
So whether it works or not this baby is going back.
A NEW ONE should be with me by Tuesday 28th - with luck.

So although obviously repacked and maybe already used it was the latest version.

It's so annoying when a company sends you something that was so obviously "second hand". I remember buying a new electric razor once and when I opened it, it didn't have any protective covering on it and when I flipped the top open it had hairs in it. You can imagine my reaction. I know your monitor didn't have hairs in it, but that doesn't make it any less annoying. 😡
Out of interest, I had a look at the sticker on the back of my LG. It has -B at the very top, although the model number further down makes no further mention of that. My manufactured date is October 2014.
Not sure whether that adds to the confusion about all this or not?! I was kind of expecting the monitors with problems to have earlier build dates than the ones like mine that seem to be OK... 😕
