regarding the refresh rate, I have a caldigit ts4 that has display port output. ive found that if you connect your MacBook Pro to the dock with thunderbolt 4 and the dock to the monitor with a display port cable, you get the same display sharpness and resolution and also the refresh rate becomes variable (48-72) if that helps your video editing
Thank you, I will try that out!

Cheers!

With Display buddy

Yes this or similar is a must IMO. Getting to a navigating the monitor's menus is a PITA. If I had to do that for volume and brightness it would annoy the F out of me!.

Thank you, I will try that out!

Cheers!
Please do report back. I don't use a dock but am curious. Also, video editing aside, is there any reason why I'd want 60 as opposed to 72? Like would anything else be noticeably better?

I just purchased a DisplayPort to USB-C cable to try out. I connected the USB-C directly to the M1 MAX MBP, without passing via my hub. I am getting more refresh rates now and thankfully the available resolutions stay the same. And yes - I am getting 60p now and a funny variable refresh rate 48-72 hz which I never saw before. I guess the DisplayPort output just has more options.

Video editing aside you might want to have 60 hz for the following reason (which is then again video related):
When I play back video content with 60 fps (like iPhone videos 60p, but this is actually a variable frame rate), I get stutter on 72 hz which is very annoying. With 60 hz I don't, it is playing smoothly. Just for reference: When editing 24p content, no stutter with 72 hz, I guess because 72 equals 3x 24. No stutter with 25p content on 50 hz (50=2x25). I am curios to see what gives the variable framerate 48-72 with all that.

But video (editing) aside you always want to have the highest refresh rate available because everything feels smoother like the pointer of your mouse, scrolling etc.

Thanks and this was my supposition. I don't watch a ton of video and so haven't noted stutter using 72, but I'll be on the lookout :)

Just in case anyone else finds this helpful, I was really going back and forth between buying 2 ASD's or the LG 40 inch 5k2k. I actually purchased both options and here are my findings:

1) The Apple Studio display really can't be beat. It's not just the resolution, it's the brightness and color and saturation. However, the size, price and stand are all issues that are hard to overcome.
2) The LG is a productivity monster. It's huge and even coming from the ASD's I don't find the resolution too much of a downgrade. Looks crisp enough. However, the 300 nits of brightness is an issue for me. I also found the colors to look washed out - not sure what's up but definitely not as vibrant as ASD. I'm still playing with the settings.

If you care about being the most productive, I don't see how you can beat the LG. You use it at native resolution and scale up your GUI you have 5k of horizontal pixels on a single screen.

If you care about a beautiful image and resolution, the ASD's are a pleasure. I would need two of them though because the screen real estate is just too little.

I currently returned the ASD's (I had the stand versions from the refurbished Apple store) and I'm sitting on the LG. I will either keep the LG or return and get 2 vesa mounted ASD's.

In case anyone cares, I also tried the Dell UltraSharp and the screens on those are almost as good as the ASD's. Truly exceptional.

I also found the colors to look washed out - not sure what's up but definitely not as vibrant as ASD. I'm still playing with the settings.
I think this is due to the fact that the LG has a matte display and the ASD is glossy. So on a glossy display the colours are more vibrant than on a matte display and the overall image appears to be sharper. But you have more reflections on a glossy one of course.

I also found the colors to look washed out - not sure what's up but definitely not as vibrant as ASD. I'm still playing with the settings.
If you don't mind me asking, which setting are you using on the screen and how are you connected to it (HDMI, thunderbolt, etc) Also do you have HDR enabled on your Mac whilst connect to the monitor? I ask because I have the LG and I use it a lot to edit and colour grade a lot of photography and the colours haven't let me down. With HDR enabled though the colours do get washed out because the measly 300 nits of the monitor can't handle it. I honestly wonder why they even bothered. Without HDR the colours on my screen look plenty vibrant and accurate

I'd love to hear peoples LG 40WP95C-W + MacBook settings.

I have just purchased at setup the LG 40WP95C-W with my MBP M1 Max (replacing 2 x 27inch LG 27UD88-W monitors).

I've got the monitor on the default settings both in Mac Settings > Display and in the monitor settings itself - and there are tonnes of options in the monitor settings (picture mode, color temp, picture adjust, game adjust, color adjust, ...).

I am not expecting ASD brightness or color with this, but am hoping to get just a bit better than how it looks straight out of the box setup like I have it now. Anyone have any recommendations for settings they have used for this monitor to get close-to-native colour/res ?

Thanks

out of the box mine came out pretty colour accurate so I kept it on custom. ive found 52% to be the sweet spot for brightness for both day and night viewing. Definitely turn off HDR. It's not worth it. it just makes your screen look washed out. And get some external speakers.

Yep everything is still on "Custom" in my monitor settings. Maybe it will just take my eyes a little to adjust to the screen and front facing viewing angle (instead of two flat 27inch screens on slight angles).

Keen to hear if anyone else has tweaked their colour/brightness/picture/res settings on this monitor to get best results for mac.

I've spent months researching and for me it came down to three options:

1. LG 34WK95U-W - 34" 5K2K display (Maybe the best option, if you're considering the 40" but want better PPI?)
2. Dell U2723QE
3. Apple Studio Display

I opted for the Dell which is great. Can't tell much of a difference between a 13" Retina and 4K 27" (163 PPI). If I wasn't limited to a (company) budget I would have opted for the Studio Display. The LG is really nice if you want an ultrawide. I'm just not sure how I'd feel about the black bars when watching non-optimized content or playing games.

just my two cents,

but I think the LG Ultrafine 5K 27" is still a great option given the current market price and how much it dropped since the Studio display has been announced. Full Apple compatibility of course with brightness and audio. You can get it in Europe for +/- 875 Euro new. The panel is more or less the same than in the Apple Studio Display besides only a few tweaks that probably most of us don't notice and don't need. And yes, it is rather ugly compared to the Apple Studio Display, that's for sure, but everyone has to decide that for themselves.

I have the LG40" and am happy with it but am considering the LG 5K 27" for a second office as it is almost half the price of the Studio Display now.

I also have a 40WP95C-W with a 14" Macbook Pro M1 and I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is an option in macOS (or using an app) to change the scale as it is available in Windows?

Because I'm looking for a way to simply keep the highest resolution (5120 x 2160) and keep everything readable. I mean, exactly as it is easy to set in Windows, there I have a resolution of 5120 x 2160 and the scale is set to 125% and everything is absolutely perfect.
In macOS, everything is too tiny on this monitor at 5120x2160 resolution, and at 3840x1620 resolution everything is unnecessarily large.

As far as my "custom settings" are concerned, I have chosen the following:
Quick Settings
Brightness: 75
Auto Brightness: off
Contrast: 70
Volume: 6
Color Temp: Manual (0)
Picture
Picture Mode: Custom
Picture Adjust ->
Brightness: 75
Auto Brightness: off
Contrast: 70
Sharpness: 50
Super resolution+: Low
DFC: off
Color Adjust ->
Gamma: Mode2
Color Temp: Manual (0)
General
Smart Energy Saving: Low
Deep Sleep Mode: on
Power Led: off
DisplayPort Version: 1.4
Thunderbolt OUT: off
Buzzer: off
OSD Lock: off

I changed my LG40 to sRGB mode and things didn't look right until I also changed the color profile in the MacOS Preferences > Display to "sRGB IEC61966-2.1". That combined with the 3840 resolution settings and things look fantastic.
The brightness is fine on my end. I realize some people don't think it's bright enough but for me it looks great. Any brighter would likely hurt my eyes.

You would likely have to simply zoom every window for every app (CMD +).
Well, this isn't exactly ideal way. I'm looking for a much more user-friendly solution, at the same way as it is very easy to change it in Windows...

Hmm. I just switched to this from LG Ultrawide and nothing changed. Am also at 3840 HiDPI.

Do you have to restart to get the change to take?

ETA: I see I have my LG in Cinema. I changed it to sRGB and it got way too dim. @mitchbookpro I would try Cinema or Custom on the LG - they're equally bright on mine.

Curious if anyone who owns the LG40 here has experienced the flickering, ghosting, etc. issues discussed on Reddit and some Amazon reviews? Wondering how widespread of an issue it is. Currently on an older LG Ultrafine 5k that has gradually ghosted worse and worse over the years. I was hoping it was just due to age. I'd like to go the ultrawide route, but nervous about getting a lemon.

I've been using a 34" LG 5K 34WK95U for almost 3 years and haven't had a problem the whole time. I have now switched to the 40WP95C-W and also no problem. Maybe I'm just lucky, it's hard to say, however I'm happy. The only thing I've had to turn off is the "True Tone" on the macbook, as I find the constant adjusting of picture rather annoying than helpful.

I am currently looking for a new display for my MacBook Pro 2016 and I tested the 40WP95C-W and it only supports up to 3440x1440 and not 5120 x 2160. Does anyone know what could be the reason? I did go to the Apple store and tested out the Studio Display and it was working with 5120 x 2880 on my MacBook Pro.

I am looking for a single display solution as I now have limited space and have been using 2 x 27inch previously.. I did check out some 34 inch display and I am finding it a bit small..

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

If your 2016 MBP drove the Studio Display without issue but not the LG then it sounds like a connection issue. What type of cables and settings were used for each? I don't have a 2016 MBP to check, but with the LG I use DP 1.4.

Under the general settings tab, try turning off Thunderbolt OUT. Let us know if that works

I am using the supplied Thunderbolt cable supplied by the LG monitor. There was also a USB-C cable that came with the monitor and I've tried that and got the same result too.

And when you are talking about settings what are you referring to? I can go to display and I have tested to use the LG as main display and also extended display. I have tried to use scaled resolution and there are no options to pick the 5120 x 2160 resolution.
