curious if there will be firmware update needed or it will just be enabled somehow like Apple TV+ app

It’s absolutely ridiculous that a manufacturer did not even want to upgrade a 2 year old TV, but only did so after public pressure. The screens are amazing but the hardware and software running it are horrific.

My 4 year old Samsung 4K TV doesn’t receive any updates anymore, and the apps that are on it are from abysmal quality. Yes that includes YouTube and Netflix.

Why can smartphones have super fast processors but do TV’s behave like they run on a 233Mhz Pentium straight out of 1997.

The smart part on your TV isn't the manufacturer's priority, or best interest. They expect you to buy the new TV instead, despite your 3 years-old TV still working fine and blast an equally beautiful pictures, same as day 1.

Never rely on TV manufacturer's software updates. Get it for the panel, especially for OLEDs. Anything more is just a bonus round. Might as well get an Apple TV box if you want long-term support. (No, don't get any Android tv box either since it's just the same crap as TV's built in software)

Darn I bought an LG in 2018 and realized it was a 2017 model. Just missed the cut.

Its OS is far superior to the one on our Sony and apps are updated regularly. Sony’s system was dismal and an Apple TV remains on it.

Meanwhile my Samsung 4K tv, over three years old, can’t even install apps. Every single one ends with an error and no one has a fix. I still get firmware updates though.

I got an LG OLED with the Homekit implementation from LG and I can disclose that officially from LG support that their implmentation does not allow to switch on the TV from Siri or any Homekit command.
They have a major bug for all their TV which once off, just power off the Wifi or Ethernet connection which kills any chance of connecting to it, so once it is off, it is unreachable from an homekit/Siri perspective.
So do not even say they will support Homekit as they won't ever and when I ask when this bug will be fixed, their answer was clear: never.
I just returned the LG TV and went for Sony which has a great Homekit implementation
I have a CX as well as a C8 and I can turn the TV on with HomeKit and Siri and I do this teach morning with my good morning scene

I can turn on my LG CX from my iPhone...

Any news on what build number the software is, or does that depend on the tv model?

My latest software is called: SW File(Version 05.20.01) from earlier this year:
[05.20.01]
1. Fix minor issues including the failure of access to certain website in the browser

Seems a bit extreme to say it’s ridiculous. They seem to have some valid concerns about the hardware being able to keep up. And we all know that the minute some of those older models start having issues, the very same people that were screaming that it’s ridiculous to not support the older models, will be screaming that those old models are having issues.
Have people really become so entitled that they demand everything, and blast whoever doesn’t give it to them? Yes, it’s ok to hope that your old model will be supported. Yes it’s ok to be disappointed if it is not. But it is inappropriate to say it is ridiculous if not.

I just got the update on my B8. Airplay works beautifully with my iPhone. I am based in Singapore.

Really happy that LG came through on this. Thanks LG!!

FWIW, I just bought an LG OLED and I've been thrilled with the responsiveness out of the box on major streaming apps.

Especially coming from a Vizio that was 5 years old.
same here! got a CX65 to replace a 2017 Vizio M series and wow what a dif. I don't even use my Apple TV now the software is so good

LG has started rolling out a software update that includes AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support for select 2018 smart TV models, according to multiple MacRumors readers, delivering on a promise the company made earlier this year.

lg-homekit-tv.jpg

AirPlay 2 enables users to stream videos, music, podcasts, and more directly from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to a compatible LG smart TV, with no Apple TV necessary. HomeKit allows users to control the TV's power, volume, and more using the Home app or Siri. These features are also available on select Samsung, Sony, and Vizio smart TVs.

LG initially said that AirPlay 2 and HomeKit would be limited to its 2019 and newer TV models, since it could not "guarantee" a "seamless user experience" on older models, resulting in tens of thousands of people petitioning the company to reconsider.

Earlier this year, LG also made the Apple TV app available on select 2018 smart TVs.

(Thanks, Maarten and Tristan!)

Does anybody know what TV floor stand that is on the picture?

Funny, mine turns on by voice. Enjoy your Sony!

That’s why I wish Apple made a smart tv
