LG has started rolling out a software update that includes AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support for select 2018 smart TV models, according to multiple MacRumors readers, delivering on a promise the company made earlier this year.

AirPlay 2 enables users to stream videos, music, podcasts, and more directly from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to a compatible LG smart TV, with no Apple TV necessary. HomeKit allows users to control the TV's power, volume, and more using the Home app or Siri. These features are also available on select Samsung, Sony, and Vizio smart TVs.

LG initially said that AirPlay 2 and HomeKit would be limited to its 2019 and newer TV models, since it could not "guarantee" a "seamless user experience" on older models, resulting in tens of thousands of people petitioning the company to reconsider.

Earlier this year, LG also made the Apple TV app available on select 2018 smart TVs.

"Earlier this year, LG also made the Apple TV app available on select 2018 smart TVs."

Earlier this year? Shouldn't that be "LATER" this year?

It’s absolutely ridiculous that a manufacturer did not even want to upgrade a 2 year old TV, but only did so after public pressure. The screens are amazing but the hardware and software running it are horrific.

My 4 year old Samsung 4K TV doesn’t receive any updates anymore, and the apps that are on it are from abysmal quality. Yes that includes YouTube and Netflix.

Why can smartphones have super fast processors but do TV’s behave like they run on a 233Mhz Pentium straight out of 1997.
Because is hard to convince People to upgrade their TV set each year?

75UK6190PUB still waiting, its funny my lg has same specs as 2019 version but without magic controller support, it should at least support airplay 2 via casting

The basic weakness of all smart TV's is that the logic board can't be easily replaced by a new version. A $180 Apple TV can be replaced once it's obsolete after 3-5 years. Just plug it in and go. The same is true for Roku ($80), Fire TV ($120), or any other device which can be plugged into an HDMI port.

As long as the HDMI input supports HDR10 or DolbyVision with nice audio, I can refresh the TV by replacing the streaming box. I would get upgraded Bluetooth, Sound, Video processing, etc...

TV manufacturers fantasize about people throwing out their sets after three or so years. This is not the case. People will keep a TV for about ten years and shuffle it to the kids or a bedroom for extra life.

Why then bother learning anything about the smart TV software? If I pick up a Roku for $80, I only need to learn one user interface for all my TV's. It's easier to deal with when teaching relatives how to maneuver around the set.

LG should simply define a standard for a plug-in circuit board. Simply selling it for $100 would be profitable since it would be cheaper to produce than an after-market solution. It would be easier to support as TV's would share the same UI and firmware level. People would then more likely continue buying LG to keep the same user interface. It would avoid the technological kludge of after-market solutions.

This is unlikely to ever happen, so the best solution is to always ignore any smart TV features and buy an after-market solution, just as many do for sound. It would be nicer to simply have the TV panel without sound, smarts, or stand.

No update yet for my 43UK6950PLB here in Austria.
Guess we won't see it before the 4th but on the 4th of January.
Was anyway surprised that they would push updates during year end..

Installed the new update for my B8 OLED , surprised that only can control power off/on and source selection under Home. No option to control Volume up/ down. Quite disappointed . Use the homebridge one better .

Nothing for 43UK6200PUA in the States, yet.

Then again, someone has to be the very last TV updated, right? Might as well be me. 😆
