LG Innotek will supply Apple with 3D facial recognition modules for the iPhone 8, according to The Korea Economic Daily (via The Investor).

The report vaguely says LG's "new facility investment" worth roughly $238.5 million will be dedicated to Apple's orders, and adds that LG will "build a new plant" for production of the facial recognition modules, which are expected to be part of the iPhone 8's front-facing FaceTime camera system.

It's not entirely clear if the front-facing camera will also have dual lenses, or retain a single lens in line with previous iPhone models.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities previously said the iPhone 8 will have a "revolutionary" front-facing camera system with 3D sensing capabilities, fueled by algorithms from PrimeSense, an Israeli company that Apple acquired in 2013. PrimeSense was known for developing Microsoft's first Kinect sensor for Xbox.

Kuo said the iPhone 8's front camera system will include two infrared modules that are able to determine the location and depth of objects placed in front of it, with potential applications including facial recognition, iris scanning, and some combination of augmented reality/virtual reality/mixed reality.

This wouldn't accept a picture to unlock your phone right? Thats a good start.

Yes, but it also implies that there would be a secure alternative to touchid, and the more i think of it, the more i think apple will put it on the back. This news is actually not that good, why make an alternative to touchid, unless it will be needed in some situations?

And about building the factory for iphone 8. I guess that is true. Since iphone 8 won' t come out until next year. I have been saying for weeks now that the rumors about the the (anniversery) Edition that will come out this year and the iphone 8 (2018) are being mixed up.

wow can't wait for the iphone 9 with facial recognition.

meanwhile apple will sell the iphone 8 with a bigger screen and a touch sensor in the back and call it innovative

NOW WHO IS DRINKING THE KOOLAID?!

Do you guys agree that;

If that 3D sensing camera is WELL BUILT; we don't care/need the touch ID anymore? It could be place outside the iPhone, let's say in other antique smartphones.

Touch ID could be "out"; not below screen, not on the back; just bye; IF the system is PERFECT and as secure as Touch ID.

Could it?

Yeah I'm gonna guess this is for the 2018 iPhone (whatever it gets called) at the very earliest... I guarantee you all supplier production plants for the 2017 iPhone(s) have already been built. o_O
Maybe they will be able to supply the first few months of production with their current facility, and this plant is for future growth and supply. It's not like LG has no production capability now.

If I was at the keynote and after paying $1.5k+ just to see the unveil in person and saw they put the button on the back and don't use the apple logo either. I would immediately boo loudly as possible and get my stuff and fly back to NY.

Good luck unlocking your phone in the dark

emm, apple may drop in a new kind of error msg: sorry, your facials are not distinctive enough to be used as passkey

Let me make sure I get this straight: To unlock our new iPhone, we just need our face, but to purchase things, we have to put our finger on the back? I know Apple usually waits to do things the right way when it comes to new tech, such as waiting until Touch ID was really secure before implementing a finger print scanner. But I can't help feeling insecure about this input method since so many companies have failed at it—not just in a small way, but massively. Apple will need to go to great lengths to convince me that this is secure as my whole life is in my iPhone. Furthermore, and I've said this many times, I'm not a fan of having Touch ID on the back of the device; it's a clunky design.

Can't say I agree. I don't want to have to hold my phone in view of my face every time I want to unlock it. I want to be able to lock it when it's at my side or sitting on my desk. Touch ID is fast, efficient and (I assume) secure. I couldn't care less about facial recognition. Won't complain about it being included, but I hope it's not a replacement.

3D sensing doesn't depend that much on ligh .. is DEPTH the thing that makes the thing work; lasers come and go (bouncing back), no matter the amount of light,

That is why I said it had to be perfect. It could red you from many angles, not only placing your phone in front of you.

You could train that sensor from many angles; its DEPTH what it uses.

Similar to the way you train touch id in many finger positions,

If Apple offers an Iris Scanner + Facial Recognition with every 2017 model, that would be fantastic.

Do you mean the touch ID on the Back? I've thought about this and saw it on an Android and to me, it would be a drawback - my phone is always on my desk at work and having the touch id on the front allows me to, well, just place my finger on the phone to open it - the other way I would be required to lift the phone every time. People who are handicap might find the touch ID sensor limiting if it was on the back. Maybe two styles is the solution.
Having facial and IRIS recognition would be helpful for the FBI.
