Bit too late to build a plant for a phone coming out in a few months...?

Yep.

So, this fall 2017, iPhone 7s, in 3 sizes: 7se small, 7s medium, 7s+ large.

Next fall 2018: iPhone 8, a body redesign with new full-front OLED or Micro-LED display & hidden TouchID sensor & Kinect face recognition.

This is very interesting tech! 3D front facing cameras with IR? Selfies are going to get pretty mad. Be great if it had a stereoscopic 3D display too - like the 3DS, which also features an IR camera to track where your eyes are to adjust the 3D effect.

Could be cool!

Good luck unlocking your phone in the dark
The article mentions IR cameras. Just like Kinect, Primesense's last big product, it can "see" in the dark.

The so-called 'iPhone 8' will release this fall.

Do you mean the touch ID on the Back? I've thought about this and saw it on an Android and to me, it would be a drawback - my phone is always on my desk at work and having the touch id on the front allows me to, well, just place my finger on the phone to open it - the other way I would be required to lift the phone every time. People who are handicap might find the touch ID sensor limiting if it was on the back. Maybe two styles is the solution.
Having facial and IRIS recognition would be helpful for the FBI.
Apple could include a siri command for waking it up, and then could do the facial scanning). So you wouldn' t have to use your finger/arm anymore. Or , since it is oled, could have the on-screen homebutton being displayed always, even when the screen is turned off.(like the always on black/white clock on oled samsungs). So you would be able to press the onscreen button, while the iphone is on the table, kicking in facial recognition while you press it, and unlocking your iphone. And if they have hood headtracking cams, you wouldn' t have to sit in front of it.
When the facial recog is reliable, and fast iphone 8/x users won't be using touchid anymore(espcially when it is on the back) for unlocking, only for apple pay .

These articles are funny. On one hand we have leaks of prototype parts (Because the phone would be understandably in pre-production fazes of development) and then another article that speaks of a supplier that will have parts in the coming phone, but they don't actually have a factory yet to build those parts. That's an 18 month to 2 year lead, easily, to actually have production representative parts coming off an assembly line. At least MR could stick to rumors that have a sliver of plausibility.

PSA - whatever you think of any rumor regarding facial rec, iris rec, touch id on the back, etc... please for the love of Jeebus don't type a dissertation about how Apple is screwing up because of X. Regardless of the new feature, they will most likely be optional. Just like the features we're all used to right now. Touch ID is optional.
Sammy just intro'd the S8 with FP sensor, facial rec, iris rec, and the ever present pass code. Choose the one(s) you prefer. All are optional. Nothing will be forced on you. Apple is (if rumors are true) just offering you more choice.

they're going to allow you to insert emoji using your facial expressions.

If I was at the keynote and after paying $1.5k+ just to see the unveil in person and saw they put the button on the back and don't use the apple logo either. I would immediately boo loudly as possible and get my stuff and fly back to NY.
Please do that. It would be hilarious :)

For those that think TouchID is moving to the back, I would say that the change to "Press to Unlock" in iOS 10 pretty much eliminates that possibility.

This factory that will supply iPhone 8 facial recognition parts in mere months from now -- is it being built by unicorns? Because, if so, that is true innovation.

Facial recognition less secure than fingerprint. Don't understand the draw. Oh wait- Tim Cook saw some other vendors had it and needs to compete.

So.... what would happen if you want to check notifications on the lock screen?

Buzz words and fads. That's what it's all about these days.

Sounds like this will be the hot, new tech for the 8S next year. The "S" stands for "Security".

If LG has to build a new factory to keep up with demand I don't see how they could produce enough modules with their existing production lines to meet the needs of what will undoubtedly be the largest iPhone launch ever.

There will be no problem keeping up with demand if TouchID is on the back because it will undoubtedly be the smallest iPhone launch ever.

LG, which already supplies Apple with dual-lens camera modules for the rear-facing iSight Duo camera on the iPhone 7 Plus, reportedly plans to build a new $238 million plant for production of the 3D facial recognition modules, which will be part of the iPhone 8's front-facing FaceTime camera system.

I'm slightly confused by this. LG best get going then, as we're only several months away from the big reveal.

(okay, maybe 6 months until 'in stock')

Glad someone thought the same thing. Maybe they mean the 'iPhone 8S'?

Do you guys agree that;

If that 3D sensing camera is WELL BUILT; we don't care/need the touch ID anymore? It could be place outside the iPhone, let's say in other antique smartphones.

Touch ID could be "out"; not below screen, not on the back; just bye; IF the system is PERFECT and as secure as Touch ID.

Could it?
How would Apple Pay work then? Would you have to place the phone on the scanner then lean close above it so it can scan it? Will they give away with that and only have Apple Pay on the Apple Watch which if you want that feature, your forced to purchase one?

I see a lot of things about this article that concern me.
What does? The camera is used for facial recognition for auto focus, not as a replacement for Touch ID.

Let me make sure I get this straight: To unlock our new iPhone, we just need our face, but to purchase things, we have to put our finger on the back?

No, this is for better auto focus.

I think that the iphone 8/x/edition of this year will have a front camera with facial recog/3d/ar tech, and that this news is about LG investing in a factory to supply modules for the back camera, that have these possibilities/features for the back camera' s for next years iphones.
