No. The TVs in question are two years old, from 2018.

LG’s mistake here was announcing support for the 2018 models prematurely. If they had just kept their mouth shut, they could have avoided most of the bad press.

Basically it sounds like their technical group said internally they could make this work, and then their marketing group ran their collective mouth off before everything was solidly in place. Bad PR practice.

Well, my B8 was less than a year old when LG announced Airplay 2 support in the first place. But I take your point generally. Certainly if you buy a cheaper model, you would expect a shortened customer support period.

My gut feeling is that the original mention of 2018 models was a mistake, as it only appeared on a support document and wasn't an announcement as such. Certainly not like today's tweet.

Around that time there were conflicting statements. It really sounds like they knew that they technically could probably do it but perhaps the corporate higher ups had not yet wanted to make it official in case something went wrong. And then some peon on the marketing side inadvertently released the preliminary plan, and all hell broke loose.

Well, regardless of how it happened, I'm very glad HomeKit is coming to my 2018 C8. AirPlay & + are bonuses as I have a dedicated AppleTV. The LG software is great, far better than Android or Roku, IMO, but the hardware on the AppleTV is just worlds better, going back to the LG WebOS feels laggy and slow. The magic wand and tile based UI is slick (honestly better than the Apple Magic Remote) but even at almost 4 years old, the A10X runs circles around the LG SOC.

Or, an engineer said they could do it and the bean counters were asked to decide if it was worth it.

I’m pretty happy with both my LG TVs and chose them as the software was so much better than other brands - at least at the time. However I’d love to have Airplay and AppleTV support. I’d be very surprised if my B6 OLED ever gets it but am curious as to whether my 49UK7550PTA counts as a 2018 TV? I bought it in 2018 but have a sneaking suspicion it was a 2017 release.

To be fair the bad press started when VIZO said they would add HomeKit and Airplay 2 to their 2016 TVs and then we started the petition against LG and all the major tech news sites (Mac Rumours, (9to5 Mac, The Verge act) ran a story on it 😂

After LG disappointed swathes of customers by saying it had "no plans" to bring promised AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to select 2018 TVs, the company has now renewed its pledge to do so by the end of the year.

lgtvsairplay2.jpg

Today's announcement was made by LG UK's official Twitter account, the very same account that last month told its customers that AirPlay 2 and HomeKit would not be coming to its pre-2019 TVs, despite previously giving customers assurances that they would do so this year.

The original tweet has since been deleted, and it's not clear whether this latest u-turn is the result of poor communication within the company or a reaction to the outpouring of negative customer comments that its earlier statement elicited. Either way, owners of 2018 LG smart TVs that have LCD models with "SK" or "UK" in the name or OLED models with "B8" through "Z8" in the name are likely to welcome the development.

AirPlay‌ 2 support will enable users of the above TV models to stream videos, music, podcasts, and more directly from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to their LG smart TV, with no Apple TV necessary. With ‌HomeKit‌ support, they will be able to control their TV's power, volume, source, and more using Siri or the Home app on ‌iPhone‌, ‌iPad‌, and Mac.

LG today also officially announced worldwide support for Apple's TV app on select LG 2018 OLED and Super UHD TVs, with support for UHD TV models to follow. The announcement follows scattered reports last month that the Apple TV app had begun showing up for some users.

I have had 2 LG monitors and I loved them both. LG brought out firmware for my monitor even when it was 3 years old. They are one of my favorite brands for displays. I have a LG 27in monitor as a third display on my MacBook Pro 16.

Not sure why they have such a problem with this. They have it on 2020 TVs. Why so hard? Plus if I can have a sensor in HomeKit a smart TVs should be super easy.

If a hardware manufacturer can update their products to take advantage of new and improved software (as LG's 2018 model certainly does), then I think LG has an responsibility to try support Apple Home etc. as these software/firmware systems continue to evolve. The 2018 OLED LGTV (and perhaps the 2017 also) were sold based on their software internals, Web browser and other Internet integrated functionality.

Never connect your TV to the Internet, unless maybe for firmware upgrades (only if they can't be done via USB thumb drive). Smart TVs are a privacy invasion and possible security threat.
If you want AirPlay, get an Apple TV. Apple is far more respective of privacy and concerned about security.

They, the manufactures, ask for your consent when setting up the tv so there's that, and if you are paranoid you could use Pihole/VPN/Firewall to block unwanted acces.

LG voice command is via WebOS right? Apple TV would be Siri based as well as upgradable OS and Apps. Comparably the WeB OS version is tied to that particular year of LG TV's. Yeah each year they have a new version of Web OS for newer models. It's why they have issues rolling out updates across multiple years. :D

I complained directly to LG about lack of support for AppleTV+ on older sets. I specifically mentioned 2017 as that’s the year of manufacture of my set. I’m hopeful 2017 sets will get the app at some point as they’re perfectly capable of running it. Airplay 2 support is unlikely but personally I’d settle for AppleTV+ support.

Same here. 2017 support would be awesome and very fair

No reason LG can’t support at the very least HomeKit and the TV app for the last 5 years of OLEDS. I use my 2016 B6 OLED with HomeKit via homebridge, it’s buggy but works. I want native support though...

I wouldn’t get your hopes up. I have an LG c9 and the airplay functionality is garbage. Hardly ever connects and when it does it takes multiple attempts to force it to finally connect, frequently drops mirroring or video half way through, it’s borderline unusable.

>imagine paying thousands for a state of the art OLED TV only to have the manufacturer tell you its out of date and they won't make the minimal amount of effort to enable features originally promised

Typically, TV CPUs operate at their max. The reason this is such a problem is that marketing in many cases released capability without understanding the existing CPU load. A software update, for the most part, cannot fix overloaded CPUs. If the capability for Airplay 2 is still not released for an old TV, I would not expect it to happen, or if it does that it will be a poor user experience because the TV is underpowered.
