LG Said to Supply Apple With Foldable Displays for Future iPhones

I actually think this is a pretty cool concept. Question: Does an iPhone that can fold out into a much larger screen probably kill at least iPad Mini but maybe iPad too? I really like the Mini but if the phone could pretty much replicate it's screen but have the greater (folded) portability for the pocket, I'd question the need/want for another Mini (for myself).

I'm not saying that's bad- just observing that an iPhone screen folded out into a larger screen seems likely to offer the utility of the bigger screen Mini (and maybe iPad) with the pocketable portability of iPhone. IMO, very cool if it works out like that.

I wouldn't want a foldable iPhone, but a foldable iPad would be dope. make the outer shell strong enough and you wouldn't need a case for it. You could probably add some really awesome features to the iPad pro and make it closer to a "pro" product.

And to keep it rolled up, one could slide a rubber band around it. Bam! Done!

That Westworld foldable iPhone Tablet is going to be a reality in the next couple years! :D

Look at that skeuomorphism on the keyboard in the back. Modern iOS would never!

For a single person, probably yes. They seem to carry their phone everywhere.

For someone like me who has multiple iPads around the house used by various people, not at all. In fact, I'd keep getting mini and full sized iPads simply because they'd be so much less expensive. Also, there's no reason for me to things that fold, if my purpose is to keep them unfolded all the time anyway :)

Hmm. Now for field operations, from repairmen to soldiers, imagine being able to pull out a small unit from your jacket pocket and expand its display size when necessary. VERY handy.

I really don't know what this means, however, I was kind of picturing an iPhone that folds out. What I mean by that, is I don't think we will see anything like a foldable iPhone like the old style flip phones we all used to have.

I personally think it will be something like the Galaxy S7 edge. The display is wrapped around the phone. When you need a bigger surface for notes or maybe want to watch a movie, having a slightly bigger screen would be pretty perfect. Especailly if you are watching something in Super HD. even a slightly bigger screen would be awesome.

This is just a theory, I have been wrong many times in the past. I have also been right. Haha. I honestly doubt anyone has any idea what is really going to happen. So feel free to disagree!

People have been talking about these for decades.
Would be nice to finally see them appear in useful ways.
Cue frantic meetings and the rest inside Samsung just so that they can be first to release a phone with a flexible screen.
Maybe they'll even redesign the S8 in time for the spring?

As the saying goes, Popcorn? Salted or Plain?

This isn't going to happen any time soon. We first need bendable boards and batteries, as well as chips that are super tiny and/or flexible. There are just too many rigid components that would need to be replaced for it to be feasible right now. The biggest possibility I see is something that folds along a tight crease with flexible ribbon cables running through connecting the different panels. What I've envisioned for years is basically what someone posted above from Westworld but without the crappy, overly sci-fi, hollywood styled, unusable GUI.
To underscore your point, Samsung demoed a bendable OLED screen over three years ago. How many "Youm" phones has anyone seen for sale?

Finally, I was waiting for the "Designed by Apple in California" Apple Book II.
With this new tech we can get a $4,000 apple book with retina display.

Non-touch, of course

Samsung has been demonstrating folding phones for years now.

Many analysts have predicted a commercial release early next year.

In this instance, Apple is trying to keep up with Samsung.

It all makes sense now. The new butterfly keyboard is training all of us so we get used to having zero travel when we press the keys in the future. The keyboard and trackback will be one glass multitouch surface with a soft keyboard similar to the iPad!

This would be cool. Starts out as maybe iPhone 7 Plus size, unfold it to become an iPad or something.

The concept of a multi-panel hinged device makes way more sense than a foldable screen, at least if the goal is to have a larger screen get folded in half for space savings. But the devices on Westworld are only showing data that can easily be broken up into separate panels / screens, which would not be the case if you're talking about watching videos or viewing photos. But I think those things are exceptions that can be dealt with in some way, especially as edge-less screen tech improves.

I'd love to see something like this for textbooks. I'm so tired of carrying around my textbooks and the iPad just doesn't feel right for textbooks just yet (in my opinion)

As far as thinness goes, absolutely mutliple panels with zero edges would work much better than having to leave enough room for a large radius fold, such as a single panel display would need.

Yep. Previous multiple panel attempts, such as the one below, still had a visible edge between screens, but that should not be necessary any more.

I'll be ready to buy the new MBP when this technology makes its way to the Touchbar.
I'm confused as to how foldable screen tech would enhance the TB.
[doublepost=1481930714][/doublepost]So, there's no issue with damage to the screen due to creasing, huh? Interesting.

Just because a screen is foldable, doesn't mean the user will be the one folding it. This is probably more about a screen wrapping around a corner in a rigid case, more than it is an actual clamshell iphone.
