I would love this to be true but with all the reports that retina mini's won't be coming until next year I was hold back from getting excited.

What reports with verifiable or at least reliable sources say Retina minis won't come until next year? I've read none; only conjecture by analysts who have no real inside info and link bait publications like Digitimes.

Don't become victim to the propaganda concept where a lie told often enough becomes truth.

Weird, Samsung is supposed to produce the A9(X) SOCs.

Yes, and Apple is also steering production of chips away from Samsung:

Other than portability, is there an advantage to owning an iPad Mini over the regular full sized iPad? I'll be upgrading from a 3rd gen iPad, and love the idea of a more portable iPad, but don't want to lose out on any functionality that comes with the larger screen of the full sized iPad. Plus if the rumors are true of a redesigned new iPad, this will make for a difficult decision. Hrmm.

I own both. Admittedly the mini was an impulse purchase. I went into the Apple Store day of release just to see what it was about with zero intention of buying one. After picking it up I couldn't resist buying a 16GB WiFi as a companion to my 3rd gen 64GB LTE. The price tag was "just" low enough that it didn't hurt.

I find that each has its strength and weaknesses. My LTE is use more like a lesser laptop and is my go-to when I travel or go to the coffee shop whereas my mini is homebound, but well traveled in the home, used for reading in bed to a remote control (Apple Remote, Harmony, Yamaha, DirecTV) in the living room, to reading the morning news in the kitchen.

troll, sensible buyers (fanboys) would not buy the first version cause they know what benefits next version is gonna bring. So try again.

Being a true fanboy and not buying a first edition .....WTF!?!? Dude, fanboy does not mean what you think it does!!!!!

Fanboy = sensible buyer......... Ha ha ha ha .

Not a bad idea at all. I usually was upgrading my iPads yearly before Apple decided to push out an upgrade 6 months after the 3 came out. At the time, I couldn't talk myself into buying a smaller iPad 2. However I like the idea of an in home use iPad mini. But I would also love one for travel as well, with a nice leather bound folio to accompany it. I guess I'll have to wait, and see come October.

This is a Huge Relief to me.

I'll be getting an iPad Mini Retina to read with at night and to surf the web. I was going to get a Kindle Paperwhite to be able to read without an external light, but no mo'.

Heck I'll probably get myself one way before Christmas 2013.

I have a mini and a Paperwhite, I love my mini so much, bought it to read PDFs, scans of book chapters and journal articles, for which despite not being retina, it does a great job (plus it's a great gaming device). When I read for leisure (which I do quite a lot) my Paperwhite is my preferred device - the battery lasts much longer, it's lighter and smaller and the backlight is very, very nice. Don't get me wrong, the mini is great, I love mine and plan to upgrade when it gets retina (this year or next year, whenever that happens to be) but I don't see either of these devices being able to do it all for quite a long time, so for now it's two lovely devices, both great at what they do.

Well, at least we know that at some point in the near-ish future Apple will be releasing a Retina version of the iPad mini. I hope they do sooner rather than later, so I can pick up a couple of discounted first 'gens for my kiddos.

Orrrrr, I can hold out and see the iPad 5, decide if I want to upgrade and then pass my 3's on to my little monsters ;)

just becuz it comes with the magical retina display? lmao

Doesn't he/she have a right to spend their money on whatever they want?

Someone in Africa that may not have the money to eat at McDonald's because they live on $2/day might laugh at you for buying a $5 Big Mac.

so according to you a fanboy is an idiotic "collector"! you fail bro.
Not all fanboys are rich to buy every device Apple puts out there.
A real fanboy (follows the company and know how they operate) would act wisely.
Fanboy are those who "loves" the products. Buying is some thing else entirely.

thank god, now let's hope there arent any delays on the apple's side, i wanna see the ipad mini retina this year.

They do. This was included in iOS 6. The OS rejects accidental screen touches. It even works on iPhone. Try placing and resting a finger on the side of the screen and then doing something with the other finger. iOS is pretty good about ignoring the resting finger.

It is if it's the second finger on the screen, but I do get a lot of accidental touches around the edge just from holding my iPad - e.g. page turns in the Kindle App.
