Well I've enjoyed my Mini and have used it a lot in the year all the "sensible" people have been sitting out. And when it finally goes Retina I'll sell mine and Buy one and enjoy it a lot too !

should've came with the first one, but nope they leave it out for v2 to make it all magical so the fanboys will buy into it.

It would nice of you to illustrate us how to develop an iPad mini with retina and the same format an year ago, given the fact that any respectable expert, like Anand, said it was not feasible. Maybe you could revolutionize the industry and you doesn't know!

Digitimes is the proverbial broken clock accurately telling the time twice a day with this story.

I still can't understand why those who have no interest in Apple products take the time to find an Apple site and then more strangely take the time to write a post....it's very odd.

I don't particularly like Microsoft products so therefore I don't bother looking for Microsoft blogs...let alone slate the users and products on their forums!

Yep, nothing brings the trolls out in force more than a story about a successful Apple product and a much anticipated update to it.

"...it's clear that Apple will ship a Retina iPad mini at some point in the future." With statements like this I to should qualify as a analyst or a weather man. "... it's clear that at some point in the future it will rain." :D

Assuming for a moment this rumor would be correct and that Apple would eventually have the technology to offer Retina in the mini without reducing battery time. With that very same technology they should be able to give the full-size iPad a much better battery life.

Compared to the current iPad 4 a Retina mini looks compelling, if one is willing to give up on screen real estate. But what if the iPad 5 offers - say - 15 hours of run time, combined with a significant weight reduction and perhaps one or two other treats (like e.g. tactile feedback)?

I know that it would make _my_ choice much more difficult...

You don't give up "screen real estate" in a 7.9 inch tablet vs. a 9.7 inch tablet if the pixel density stays the same. The rumors are that the new iPad mini does have the same pixel density as the ipad 4, 2048 x 1536. The text characters will be smaller on the ipad mini but it will still be very readable due the high pixel density(326 ppi) and the scalable vector fonts of iOS.

Most likely Apple takes the efficiency of the new screen into account by reducing the size (i.e battery) of the iPad 5. The rumors are it will be as thin and have the narrower design of the mini. So the reduction will offset the battery gains and they stay spot on 10 hours.

So in a way you are exactly right if they were to keep the current physical design and weight of the iPad 4. Might get 15+ hours of battery life, but that's not how Apple rolls.

I for one think the battery performance is great, so I welcome the reduced size weight of the iPad 5 assuming the battery life is kept at a real 10 hours.

just becuz it comes with the magical retina display? lmao

When I looked to buy an ipad back in March, it was really clear from my store experience, that the retina ipad was head and shoulders above other tablets, and the price/form-factor of the mini was also the best package.

That said, the non-retina display was very obvious when comparing the two, and placed the mini below many android tablets.

Put a high quality screen in the mini, and there isn't any reason to consider any other tablet.

That's just crazy. How could you possible enjoy current tech when the future will offer so much more? I mean that is the thought of many here. You should have "saved" your money and waited until the Retina mini was out and then decide to wait again until the Retina w/ A8 chip is out only to wait until the Retina w/ Magnetic Gestures and Emotional Sensors w/ A12 chip came out.

Of course now, even though you enjoyed your mini thoroughly you'll have to sell your mini and spend maybe another $150 to get an improved version. Amortized over a year that's over $12.50 a month for the upgrade! :D

The worst part about ALL new Apple devices coming out this fall and in the future is that they will be pre-loaded with the disgusting, garbage that is iOS 7.

Then don't buy any of it, and if enough people agree with you, Apple will change it. ;)

and many people think the current ios is disgusting.. many people think apple products are disgusting. so if youre using anything from apple right now you are disgusting.

how to sell same thing twice to the hipsters

guess you forgot that the retina display macbooks were out around this time, which was already struggling with retina panel supply issues. people like you think retina panels grow on trees and apple is up to the big cover up to make people buy things twice.. which is funny because when retina screens first came out people like you said retina screens were a scam in the first place and there was no difference.. cant have your cake and eat it too.. tinfoil hats are hot this time of year.

Digitimes: the most unreliable source for Apple rumors.

And the most prolific too! There is some sort of rumor by them every other day even contradicting themselves. They've only been half right like twice and still they get quoted all the time! I'm sick of them and I don't even read the article once I see their name.

somebody feels entitled.

maybe electrical engineering is harder than you think. apple would have sold us the kit and caboodle in V1 if they could, but that isn't how tech works -- incremental engineering and production is the name of the game. further, the key features of the mini is size and weight. thus anything expanding the size and weight (as double density displays and video driver and battery would do) is secondary. if it jeopardizes the primary considerations then it gets the axe. design choices.

----------

troll, sensible buyers (fanboys) would not buy the first version cause they know what benefits next version is gonna bring. So try again.

not really. I bought one because the features it offered (size and weight) offered value to me, serving a different use case than my main iPad. a retina version would also offer value (and perhaps have its own drawbacks). should I get one in the future ill have zero reservations because of the value I'm reaping from the current. that doesn't change. further, my friends and family love hand me downs, so the value of an obsolete model continues to exist.

----------

Better than being impatient and buying the non-retina iPad mini G1.

it's not impatient if the product offers value. simple.

I don't understand narrowing the bezel unless they incorporate something for accidental touches at the edge of the screen.

They do. This was included in iOS 6. The OS rejects accidental screen touches. It even works on iPhone. Try placing and resting a finger on the side of the screen and then doing something with the other finger. iOS is pretty good about ignoring the resting finger.
