Why not IGZO screens by Sharp ?

Just give me a redesigned full size iPad and I'm happy. Finally some news on this one after quite some time though.

The whole thing about rumors is that it's so wobbly right from the start. We just had few reports state the exact opposite. And now this. Digitimes is getting too bad.

It just wasn't possible due to technological restraints.
Without the power savings of the IGZO display tech and probably more efficient CPU the mini would have latest like 3 hours.
Or they would have had to put in a bigger battery, which would have made the mini bulkier and heavier.
They went with lightness and battery life.
Now they can pick all three. high-res display, same lightness, same 10 hr. battery life.

Still not sure if they can have all three in that form factor. It will be interesting to see if they can accomplish that for Gen 2.

Excerpt:

A day before meeting with Guo arrived in Japan, Apple executives were in Tokyo meeting with Sharp. What they discussed is secret (speculation is that it could also involve manufacturing related to an iTV product), but industry observers believe that Apple must be alarmed in the extreme at the possible loss of intellectual property to Samsung as the result of a Samsung-Sharp equity tie-up.

should've came with the first one, but nope they leave it out for v2 to make it all magical so the fanboys will buy into it.

You must be having a pitiful childhood. Don't worry, you can still carve your own path after high school, no matter what your mom says.

The screen DID NOT EXIST. You're saying they should have waited to release the iPad mini until this or next year. Ridiculous.

guess you forgot that the retina display macbooks were out around this time, which was already struggling with retina panel supply issues. people like you think retina panels grow on trees and apple is up to the big cover up to make people buy things twice.. which is funny because when retina screens first came out people like you said retina screens were a scam in the first place and there was no difference.. cant have your cake and eat it too.. tinfoil hats are hot this time of year.

Oh Stop it already. You know it's not true, why post it? Does it really make you feel that much better?

I completely agree! Apple should've waited until late 2013 or 2014 to introduce the iPad mini. That way, the first-generation model would have a Retina display!

(Sorry — sometimes I can't resist feeding the trolls.)

I for one do not want a retina iPad Mini if they're going to compromise the weight, power, and battery life. They made these mistakes with the iPad 3, and I do not want the same mistakes on the iPad Mini 2. For this year, I want the iPad Mini to have more storage up to 128GB, A6 chip, maybe a better rear camera, better battery life, and more color options. ;)

And anyways, the iPad 5 will move to an iPad Mini-like design, so it'll be smaller and that will have a retina display. So Apple is going to push the iPad 5 into the market hard, to bring some iPad Mini customers back since the big iPad has more profit margin.

I think the iPad Mini and iPad will be more like the Macbook Air and Macbook Pro. If you want something small, thin, light, and great battery life but without a retina display, then iPad Mini is your option. If, on the other hand, you want something more powerful, more storage capacity, and the retina display but overall bigger and heavier than iPad Mini, then the iPad is your choice.

And six terabytes of onboard storage. The only reason Apple doesn't sell the iPad mini with six terabytes of onboard storage is that they're greedy.

And because it would be much thicker. And much more expensive. And had no battery life.

But mostly because they're greedy.

troll, sensible buyers (fanboys) would not buy the first version cause they know what benefits next version is gonna bring. So try again.

Got my mini as a gift and as much as I would love if it had a retina screen I really do not miss it when I actually use it. I use it mostly for reading books and watching videos, both look great. I would be excited to try out a retina iPad mini but do not think I would replace my mini G1 for it.

I do miss the retina screen when I use a full size iPad 1 or 2, after using an iPad 3. Something about the larger screen really shows off that resolution. But after the mini, I don't miss either one. The mini's size is perfect for "iPad tasks" and I have a "real computer" for when I need a larger screen or better control (e.g. a real keyboard and trackpad)

Thank goodness. Releasing another iPad Mini without Retina would of been horrible. The thing should've launched with Retina in the first place. No reason for putting obsolete technology on a new product like that. Not to mention developers are moving away from non-Retina devices.

This is a report from digitimes, nothing is guaranteed. You also obviously did not read anyone else's comments before posting your own. There was no retina display of its size in existence at the ipad minis release.

Products are typically obsolete before they're released. There is always something better in existence, the question is whether it's there at the right price and if supply can meet demand.

Yayyyy iPad Mini Retina for Christmas

This is a Huge Relief to me.

I'll be getting an iPad Mini Retina to read with at night and to surf the web. I was going to get a Kindle Paperwhite to be able to read without an external light, but no mo'.

Heck I'll probably get myself one way before Christmas 2013.

Get the Paperwhite anyway. It's cheap and the battery lasts forever. Great solution for reading.

Sensible buyers buy what they need when the need is there. My iPad 1 was getting sluggish, so I bought a first gen mini. I don't need the retina screen, so I'll keep this one until it needs an upgrade.

I would love this to be true but with all the reports that retina mini's won't be coming until next year I was hold back from getting excited.
