Fingers crossed.... Apple does disclaim the discount with "Subject to availability; quantity limits apply. Pricing effective 27 October to 31 December 2016" so they could always say "Well, the screen wasn't available".

Nah, the return period for all these new MBPs runs into 2017. They'd risk a good amount of returns. If they offered an in house dock/hub, I'd of believed it.

Where the hell are they then...? 4 Dec, and nothing. Patience really is a virtue after all.

Incidentally, does anyone know what brand the 2m cable LG are using with their display?
I'd love to know because AFAICT, there are no others on the market at that length that offer ALL of the following: full speed 40 Gbps Tbolt 3, full speed 10 Gbps USB-C, and importantly 100W of charging for the 15" MBP.
No other Tbolt 3 cable on the market offers all this, as far as I've found, weirdly.

I've been thinking this exact thing. Wouldn't it be funny if it were the cable delaying things!

Visually, the cable looks identical to Belkin's 2m TB3 cable (which doesn't support USB-C or 100W). Maybe it's a variant of that?

Belkin 2m TB3 cable:

There's a scene in MKBHD's video where he shows the packet with the LG cable in, and there is a barcode on it. I'm trying to download in 4K to see if I can enhance it and see the numbers below the barcode, it may provide some clues! :p

This is why you sprinkle product thoughout the year vs dumping it on people all at Christmas time.

Nice one. Any luck?

off topic

My LG 4k charges my TB 15" like really quick.....this worries me :D
That uses just a vanilla USB-C cable though, the 5K is a Tbolt 3 one.

Annoying how all this cable technical detail is seemingly kept hidden, by everyone in the business, like it's some bloody state secret or something.
Hint: Perhaps the editorial team here could do a piece on it, to help us mere mortals out by actually investigating the cable issues more thoroughly and in depth.

For example, why do Apple not make a USB-C to mDP/DP adaptor, when they make ones for VGA and HDMI?? Others on the market all seem to be flakey, from my reading.

The whole institutional arrangement of USB-C needs to be disposed of an started again, with a universal, straightforward, and transparent approvals/certification process, off-the-shelf open source designs manufacturers can use, and a database of approved devices, cables, and other accessories.

A nominal fee paid by manufacturers (passed on to the consumer) to fund a new (and better) USB-IF style organisation, some sort of hologram on the packaging, and website where you can type in the product name and see 1) whether it is approved and 2) how to check you have a genuine one would be totally feasible.

As to the USB-C to mDP - I guess Apple doesn't make one because they can't make one that's not flaky! :p

Right. What worries me is that it's 65W and the charger is 85W, but it charges really fast, which........

But I agree with all critisisms of this new USB-C stuff, as it's like a cluster ****. But using it is really great. I'm really liking the whole thing.

BTW, your going to love your monitor. They are truly made for these new laptops.

It's possible the maximum charging rate of the batteries in the 15" is actually around 61W and the extra 26W provided by the 87W power adapter is just to ensure there is enough juice available when the system is being pushed to the limit without having to draw from the battery. In other words, when idling/sleeping, the 61W and 87W might charge a 15" at the same rate.

there's a lot of assumption going on there dude :D (where did you get 61W? :D )

The power adapter for the 13" is 61W.

It is pure assumption/guesswork, yes, but it is a perfectly reasonable explanation for why a display that can output no more than 60W appears to be charging your 15" Pro "really quickly".

Where does it say the 4K display outputs just 60W?

EDIT: sorry, just realised it's on the specs on Apple's site.

Why don't they at least let us order? Even if availability is February, at least we'll know what to expect. At this point, I'm so frustrated that they had a one-hour order window for a lucky few.

I'm starting to wonder if LS doesn't want to see them at this price so are holding back.

I actually had two on order, and cancelled one of them. Starting to think I should have bought both and sold one for a small profit...

Well at this point, even if they eventually get the LG 5K orders going they won't arrive before our return period. I'm not taking a chance on how/wether they'll work. Going to take a full TM backup of my 2016 15" in early January and doing a TM restore onto my 2012 rMBP 15" and returning the 2016 unit. I'll give them another year to sort out the TB3/USB-C issues.

For what its worth I got my 4K LG. I am coming from a 27" (old) iMac and decided 27" screens simply isn't for me.

It shakes slightly more than I expected but that could be my desk. Really solid build on the thing. Insanely uninspired design.

Speakers aren't bad not great, more of a surprise really it has speakers.

I like the resolution / panel size they picked, more 4:3, less 16:9 unlike other 4K monitors. The Panel is really nice and crisp. Retina is a wonder.

I wish the cable management was, well, existent - there is no where to thread cables coming out of it (power, USBC to MacBook, USBC to lightening for my iPhone).

It charging my MacBook and my iPhone, which is pretty nice. The USBC cable included is black and has the old USB symbol on it.

Not much else to it. Pull it out of the box. Includes all the cables it should. It works as advertised. I wish my MacBook was like that.

On the cable front, can you identify the manufacturer by looking in System Information? (sometimes a code, that then leads to the manufacturer by Googling! ;-)
Or does the bag that contained the cable have any barcode/wording on it at all?

I'd guess they might use the same company to supply the cable on the 5K... perhaps... maybe... It'd be good to know anyway.

Went thru the system information. Sorry, I didn't identify anything I could use to tell who makes the cable.

I am pretty sure the cable came in a clear bag. The box has been packed away.

I'm waiting for this to become available again. So many bad reviews for the smaller 4k version.
