Imagine having the most svelte and streamlined tablet on the market connected to a fugly bezel-thick monitor that looks like it came out of a ca. 2007 accounting firm. The resolution would be the least of my concerns.

But nothing is as beautiful and aethetically pleasing as apple stuff. Nothing.

Third World Problems.

Yeah they look great but throttle the minute you do real work on it. Look how great my flaming slate is!!!

The fact that people here are obsessing about the look of this monitor rather than the 5k demonstrates 1) these people care only for aesthetics 2) dont do actual work on their computers 3) probably can’t afford the display in the first place.

Provoke all you want, but Apple WAS about both form and function to an impeccable degree. Think Cinema Display (RIP). Speaking as a design director who's been working all day with Macs for the last couple decades and can afford to buy the whole lineup a few times over. I'd rather buy something that doesn't offend my eyes. What's your point exactly?

Steve, you are so missed.

This isn't an Apple product. Calm down.

It's sold as an Apple affiliated product and it's the only option on their store for a 3rd party display. It's about as "good" as an Apple product, positioning wise. Otherwise why would MacRumors even write about it?

The real problem is there are no other 27” 5k displays on the market. If Apple isn’t, I wish Dell or someone else who knows how to at least make symmetrical bezels would make one.

So to be clear the previous generation 5K display was unable to handle an iPad Pro 2018 connected to it? Can anyone verify this? I've read the previous generation 4K display worked fine with iPad Pro 2018.

That is correct. Only the 4K has USB-C connectivity with the iPad Pro 2018.

Timmeh! Driving Apple into the ground one day at a time all in the name of shareholder love. What made them great was leading and being so ahead that they had time to revise their new designs and also why Jonny probably loved it there. When we have someone we work with that we gel with, it stops being work and is something better...

I can't help but assume what they are now is a empty shell given the competition is now usually the first to implement so many things that are new and Apple puts their "twist" on it.

Acer used to make beautiful 4k and wide quad HD “zero frame” thin bezel monitors that matched up well with aluminum Macs. Sadly they have exited this segment of the monitor market and are now focusing on gaming monitors.

My ideal Mac monitor would be 27” 5k in one of the discontinued Acer designs.

What does any of your above rant have to do with the fact that USB doesn’t have sufficient bandwidth to support 5K? Or did you post to the wrong thread?

Apple is certainly not driven to the ground, as their latest earnings report indicates, but their products and design language are all over the place. Gone is the ability to align material selection and industrial design choices across ALL product families, including their peripherals and select 3rd party offerings. From the funky translucent multicolored iMac to the elegant snowy white plastic and glass (iMac G4, iPod), and then to smooth no-nonsense aluminium and glass, it was all fully streamlined up until a few years ago. Now you have this rather random clutter of products and peripherals, the UltraUgly Display in particular being a blaring example of the lack of care Tim's Apple shows towards design aesthetics and consistency.

It's got to do with the fact that Apple used to provide 1st party solutions to many things or were very particular about what they sell. This plastic junk is not worth $1300. I mean seriously?! Just because it originates from Apple Online doesn't mean it's worth the price of admission.

A related aside: if you connect a 2018 Mac Mini to a 4K monitor you're going to see a performance hit. Skipping mouse cursor, slow page scrolling, etc. I have a 4K monitor on a Mac Mini and at full resolution the Mini is dropped to 4fps. I can't imagine how much slower it would be on 5K.

I had to add an external graphics card to use the monitor at full resolution.

I wasn't surprised to need an external graphics card but people should not expect Apple's marketing-speak to translate to real-world performance.

Where do you work? Post a link to your website please, id like to take a look at your achievements.

I'll stick with my Acer VG270K 4K IPS that cost me under £300 new....
I decided to look it up as a cheaper alternative. I can’t believe you seriously compared a 3840x2160 monitor to a 5120x2880 monitor. All 5120x2880 or even 5120x1440 are in that price range.
