surely if this is possible without causing issues with Apps etc it can be implemented into the OS

Hm, does this trick do anything that I can't also do by pulling up the control center and reducing the brightness?

BTW, I think it was mentioned before, but f.lux doesn't simply dim the screen but changes the color temperature (mimicing bright daylight during the day, warmer light at night). So this is really not the same.

Rigby,

Yes, it actually dims it far beyond what you can do with the usual slider.

Those who use(d) flux know it's not the same..but it works temporarily ;)

Can anyone make a video or screenshots of this in action?

don't have ios 8 myself so i wonder what it looks like.

A screenshot will not show the contrast. Look. Nope, of course you can't :p

Edit: actually taking the screenshot disables it momentarily.

Wait so you can set this up where it'll act as a toggle? How do we do that without going into settings accessibility etc every time?

Triple click home button..I used instructions OP

Ok yeah it worked thanks OP like some are saying though this just dims it to the extreme right? I don't think it'd even be bright enough at night though with anything lower than about 15% brightness. Has anybody actually used it at night and is finding it useful?

Yes. I triple click and adjust to how low I want it. Better than nothing!

It dims much farther than extreme right on the slider. It is incredibly useful for those of us who drive at night in the middle of nowhere, have the dash lights super dark or even off to maximize night vision, and have the phone on the dash for navigation. This setting is the difference between having enough night vision to have the time to hit the brakes and having just a scary incident, vs having an elk through the windshield at 80mph and being dead. So I would say it is useful. Those of you that drive in Elk/OpenRange areas know I'm not exaggerating.

I've used it every night since finding this thread, on my phone and pad. Even on a white on black skin, there is enough brightness to read with night adapted vision.

Today mine went back to zoom'ing without me changing anything. I checked the settings and they were all correct. I unchecked a few of them and checked them again and my screen dimming is back. Very strange.

Works like a charm! Thanks! This will be useful on bedside before sleeping. Lowest setting is still too bright in a dark room, so far I've been turning on flash light while browsing to compensate the eyes, but this should work better.

Woo! Finally figured it out! Really had to pay attention to the instructions (and some helpful user posts as well thanks!). I like it! I'm not a fan of f.lux, I don't like the color tempature changes as I tend to either need the color tempature constant for the purposes of image editing and the fact that I really like a cool color temp in general. This will help those times when my eyes are killing me at night or are just sensitive...much easier to feel the home button when my eyes are only 1/10th open and dry than trying to see the touch screen!

EDIT: Someone should make a video on how to do this as the instructions can be confusing...the difference between a "click" and a "tap" is already confusing. I think a video would greatly help...I'd do it right now but its 2:45 in the morning here :p

Yes I find it very useful and use it any night I'm reading my iPhone or iPad in bed with all lights off. Sometimes I enable it and then bump the slider bar up a air because while 15% is too bright, the 2% or whatever it knocks it down to makes some sites difficult to read.

For those not able to set it up, when you do the triple tap on the screen's zoom box with three fingers, do it fast. That was my main hang up at least.

Good find!
This'll keep me sweet, until the soon-to-be released Pangu jailbreak arrives for Mac and I can then install f.lux. ;)

Au Contraire

Hello world, there is a way to dimming the backlight quickly:

1. Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Zoom -> Enable Zoom. Tap the screen with three fingers thrice.
Press 'Choose Filter' > 'Low Light', Chose Zoom Region to "Full Screen Zoom".

2. Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Accessibility Shortcut (It's on the bottom) -> Set to "Zoom"

After that, if you click the home button triple, you can dimm the screen quickly!

F.lux changes the emitted hue from blue to yellow - which is a MUCH easier hue on the eyes at night. Although the zoom trick helps, is is definitely NOT a substitute for f.lux. Keep your eyes safe!

It's not f.lux but it's the only thing that will do anything remotely similar without jailbreaking.

This is fantastic! My nighttime eyeballs thank you, OP.

I wonder how much this could potentially extend battery life - I notice that in it's dimmed 'zoom' state it's not only dimmer, but it also seems to limit iOS animations - dimmed there's no sliding transition on a double tap to show apps running concurrently, for instance.

I've been giving this question some thought. If you rotate the pad when on, you can actually see the darkness layer shift enough to see the brighter background underneath. So this is darkening all pixels X amount, not turning down the LED backlight. So it won't save power there. And you can't really tell when it's on, so you might leave it on, come back not remembering the last time you used your device was 2am, and turn the backlight slider up, reducing runtime.

Still use it every day, regardless.
