Mine also has a light leak above the volume controls. Maybe half to 3/4 of an inch. I don't know if I should exchange it. It doesn't bother me at all but I don't want dust to get clogged and interfere with visibility though I doubt that will happen. I don't think I paid much attention to my older iPod Touch that I recycled.

Ugh, finally found a 64gb in my city, and it has a few light leaks. I can notice it in normal lighting too. But in the dark, it's really really annoying, especially when watching a video. Gonna exchange it as soon as they get more in stock.

On the right side of the device, easily seen in the dark with the brightness cranked is a small light leak out of the side of the device. Looking at it closer it doesn't look like the bezel is detached from the side but it's irritating while watching movies in the dark. It's more noticeable at different angles. Is this something worth taking it back for? I found this thread where several others apparently seem to be having the same issue. The pictures of this guy's leaks are similar to where mine is.

My screen is in great condition, everything's working so far and by returning it I may get a worse unit, would you exchange it?
I've noticed the same thing on my new 4G. I wonder why?

It's not that annoying, but it's definitely noticeable.

Definitely get it replaced, not just for what the flaw is, but also for the fact that it will eventually let dust inside the device that you will see sitting on top of the display (it happened to me on my 2G touch as well as the replacement I got for said touch).

Actually apple superglued the display right to the glass in front of it. So threes no dust at all going in the display glass. Just in then touch itself. I bet apple was aware there're were flaws in the new design so that might be the reason they supeerglued the LCD to the glass.

**** I just realised that mine has a light leak near the volume buttons. I didn't even notice it until this thread.

Other than being slightly distracting, will it cause any other problems? Like serious ones? Please help the 14 days for return is going to end soon

It's not sealed properly. Smudge, dust and humidity (condensed water) might enter and cause unpredictable results. Most likely failure of components due to short circuits.

I'm taking mine back because of two light leaks. Would hate for moisture to seep into these unsealed areas and trip Apple's moisture detector, thereby voiding the warranty. Since I have 90 days to return it, I'm in no hurry.

you cannot get dust under your screen, the glass and the screen are fused together.
Yest, but still light leakage is distracting when watching in low light room or at night. This is definetely an issue and it shouldn't be like this.

Yes and no, since my ipod is never out of its case, I don't even see it. If it causes any problems in the next year apple will repair it, so why worry?

I fear it may not happen :( Light leak is not a new problem to iPod touch. Only the first gen was free from this issue, because the whole glass panel was not glued, but perfectly mounted to screen by screws. In the 2nd, 3rd and now 4th gens, Apple opted for more cost effective technique, using glue to attach the front glass panel to the screen. This resulted not only in light leakage, but also dust particles coming inside between glass and the screen. Fused screen doesn't change anything here, becasue there are numerous iPhone4 threads on macrumors discussing issues about dust under glass, and the newest iPhone has also fused screen.

The only solution is going back to touch 1st gen technique and mount screen using screws, not glue. I fear it may be to expensive for Apple.

Well, I'm done with the iPod touch after getting five (5!) defective units in a row. Three had light leaking and two had 4 or more stuck/dead pixels. The quality needs to be upped on this product.

I think some light leak is going to me normal. Even if yours doesn't have it now, it will happen because the area around the volume buttons get the warmest and cause the glue to fail.

Don't return it, you'll have to pay a restocking fee. Replace it under warranty.

I figured this was bound to happen. Apple's quality control is pretty bad on this model.

I wonder if they'll fix it or just ignore it?

I bet if you make an appointment at the genius bar and ask to return it they would probably waive the restocking fee because it is a defective item...

I posted this on another forum but I'd like opinions from here. Its hard to capture on camera but I that lightleak is actually one line (hairline width).

Here's a heads up. Light leaks are not covered. They are actually normal for iPod touches. My current iPod touch has MAJOR light leaks on the sides but the Genius bar people said it's NORMAL. And I went five different times with five different people.

Just ignore it, not going to hurt you at all :)

Heh, I love that the stores all provide different answers. I've returned two with light leaks, they replaced both, said that they were covered.

Another reason not to buy from an Apple store.

I had a minor light leak, and the Genius gladly exchanged it for a replacement on the spot. "Restore from backup" actually only restored some stuff, so all my music, videos, and apps are gone. :( The replacement has a worse light leak  My last one was just two small dots that's like a millimetre, but this one's big. Is the white box refurbs?

Same, I just "exchanged" 1 of the two iPod 4G Touches I own. I put that in quote since I'm waiting for the Apple Store to order my shipment. Great news is.... the Apple campus is also in Sacramento!
