Good. Time for retirement.

Lightning was a VAST improvement over 30-pin and mini-USB, but it's time to move on to USB-C. In some ways Lightning may still be superior to USB-C but the market has spoken.
honestly, USB wasn't designed for connecting it multiple times a day and getting pocket lint force-fed into it. In terms of physical connector for a phone, lightning works well and you can clear it out with a toothpick.

It's pathetic at this point, a 10yr old connector transferring at USB 2.0 speeds, a speed that came out in the year 2000!. For christ sake Apple, USB 2.0 is approaching a quarter of a century old in just less than 3yrs.
There’s no reason Lightning couldn’t be updated to support higher speeds. Apple just doesn’t seem to think that’s important.

I'm hoping we see an iPhone with USB-C next year... even if it's only on the Pro model. I got a 12 so I can hold on another year, but 3 years is my typical upgrade interval, and I'd want my next one to have USB-C if it's in the cards. It's been a persistent rumor for a long time.

Ah that lovely picture brings back nice memories of the good old days when iOS wasn't hideous and the iPhone was reasonably sized, but still had the headphone jack. I still love lightning, though. USB type C plugs and their flimsy build quality always feel like such cheap garbage by comparison.

Hate traveling with 3 different cables even staying in the Apple ecosystem. Watch, Lightning, USB-C. Would love to punt one to the curb.
You forgot MagSafe so that’s 4, although just about get away with 3 if you use the slooooow Duo lightning charger for iPhone/Watch.

If you’re travelling, no way in hell will anyone risk a hotel room trip risk on your MBA/P using the alternative USB-C option.

Definitely a big improvement over the 30-pin connector, but I wish Apple would have waited just a bit more in 2012 and directly put a USB-C port to the iPhone.
And dealt with all the incompatibilities, and blown up devices? And broken ports?
USBIF should have just licensed lightning.

I wonder how Android users go about their day, worrying how their phones may stop charging any time due to all the lint getting every second into their charging ports.

Today marks 10 years since Apple introduced the iPhone 5 with an all-new Lightning connector, which replaced the previous 30-pin dock connector that originated on the iPod. Apple's former marketing chief Phil Schiller described Lightning as a "modern connector for the next decade," and this milestone has now been achieved.

iPhone 14 models remain equipped with a Lightning connector, but Apple is widely expected to switch to USB-C for iPhone 15 models next year.

Apple already offers USB-C ports on every Mac and nearly every iPad that it sells, along with the Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, some Beats headphones, and a few other accessories. Rumors suggest the upcoming 10th-generation entry-level iPad will also adopt USB-C, followed by AirPods charging cases and the MagSafe Battery Pack next year.

In June, the European Union announced that it reached an agreement to introduce a new law that would make USB-C the common charging port across all new smartphones, tablets, headphones, and many other electronics by fall 2024. iPhone 15 models are expected to launch around September 2023, ahead of the European Union's deadline.

While the Lightning cable was the first reversible charging cable, USB-C has become a very popular charging standard across a countless number of devices. A major benefit of USB-C for the iPhone would be faster data transfer speeds, as Lightning on the iPhone 13 and earlier tops out at 480 Mbps, while USB-C can achieve up to 5 to 10 Gbps depending on the spec, or even up to 40 Gbps if the iPhone supported Thunderbolt 3.

Absolute insanity that not even the Prores capable iPhones Pro get USB-C, or even just the USB 3.0 iteration of Lightning that a few of the pre-USB-C iPads Pro got.

Ten years of USB 2.0 transfer speeds.

Courageously embarrassing! 👏😆

Over 2 decades ago. We had CDMA fones and they had no sims. So this is not really an upgrade or an innovation as some may claim.

Yeah, we went backwards technology wise with SIM cards once Qualcomm's CDMA went out the door for what became LTE. I was like man this is just weird having to do a SIM swap for the same carrier when this was never needed for a long time.

eSIM is definitely better though, with having a registry of even 8 SIMs and 2 "active" phones, which will probably expand over time too.

I think I remember about maybe 4-5 years ago the rumor was that Apple was dropping the Lightning connector. How do you know when a rumored prediction is really going to happen?
When it becomes law and no point in fighting it so long. But I bet they have a new port that’s ready and that would be the new standard that everyone else need to follow since it would be that good, and then just provide an adapter for it to connect for usb c 😂

What in the world are you talking about?
Not entirely sure as I use iPhones. Just what I see the the android boys whine about.
