I've been using USB-C for 5+ years and have never had an issue with compatibility of any type or have any broken cables/connectors.
Just out of my head:
- Nintendo Switch Charger couldn't charge my android phone (Blackberry One), it aborts after 2 or 3 seconds
- Nintendo Switch on my Sandberg Solar panel with integrated power pack shorted out the LEDs on it, but only when connected via USB C, didn't happen with a USB A to C cable.
- ipad air 4 has severe issues fast charging from 3rd party chargers when there is an USB A to C cable involved.
- same with iphone mini, but here it depends more on the lightning cable. The original iphone cable with an adapter works worse than using a third party USB A to lightning cable
- if I charge a powerbank with a powerbank (e.g. the one with solar) connected by an USB-C cable, which way will it charge?
- mini/micro usb sockets are prone to breaking. Had an XPeria Pro that went back to the shop two times because of that. Most of the times I was able to carefully bend it back into shape with a small screwdriver. In my experience, it got a lot better with USB-C.
- and of course plenty of broken chargers. One had a bad transformer and gave me a shock, another one went up in smoke (that was an original phone charger, just after a few weeks).
- there are different classifications of USB-C cables, one has to be aware of it, especially when drawing more than 30 Watts.
to be fair, Apple chargers and PSUs (mac mini was in service for over 15 years with original PSU) have so far outlasted most others and did not went up in flames. However, there are still compatibility issues between apple devices, the ipad2 charger couldn't fast charge my ipad air 4.
it isn't overall terrible and I recognize it's getting better. For me, I mostly look forward to USB-C because of the transfer speeds. Synchronizing/Backuping my 256GB phone takes a long time, I wouldn't want to do it with a TB phone in a couple of years.
