I have an ihome I used with my iPhone 4 and waiting for my adaptor to show up so I can charge my phone at night as well.

I could not charge my phone in a case on the ihome so I bought a 30 pin extension with back support. It also came out when I took the phone off so simple solution was to super glue the adaptor down to the ihome. I have had zero issues since then and the fact that it comes up high is fine since there is a bak support to the extension that hold the phone up right.

I plan on taking out my old 30 pin extension and gluing my new lighting to 30 pin in its place and I can charge an play music through my ihome again for 30$ versus buying a new lighting ihome for 150$.

My only issue and disappointment is that the lightning connector on adapter ends flush with the wide 30 pin part so my iphone 5 in its case doesnt fit. A regular lightning cable works fine because the cut out on the case is made for the small connector's plastic base. so the main reason for buying the adapter is now useless unless i buy a different case. oh well.. $29 wasted.

I wonder if I can shave down the case or the adaptor to fit. I've done this with iPhone 4 cases and plugs before. However, it was only just the edges. This seems like I would have to shave a lot more off to fit with my outterbox commuter.

On a side note, I find it funny that everyone's in an uproar about changing the connector after 10 years. Android went from mini usb to micro usb after what, 1 year?

I for one am not bothered by the change in adapter, but this really isn't an appropriate example.

Android switching in 1 year was more convenient. Some people have had 10 years to collect a lot more accessories than someone generally will in 1 year.

It's causing me some issues and I will have to return mine and get the cable version to work with cases. However I am really happy to see the back of the goofy old dock connectors, which always got full of crap and did not work well after a year or so.

This would not be an issue had Apple posted the Lightning specifications months ago so that manufacturers could produce products at the iPhone 5 launch. Since they did not do this, the adapter is the ONLY solution out there.

It isn't the only way. You could charge your phone with the USB cable plugged into a wall. If you need to play audio through your dock get a bluetooth bridge.

Depending on the dock, the 0.2m cable adapter is also an option and will allow you to lay the phone down flat rather than elevating it. After 10 seconds on Google, there also appears to be 30pin extension leads you can use to connect the dock and the lightning adapter. I'm not going to look into it, but I'd guess that dealextreme or somewhere similar would sell them for a dollar or two.

Dude, get a life. This whole site is full of first world problems. Do you really think that they are bitching about the new ATT Mobile Share plans in Uganda?

Yes, because going online and whining about an adapter doing what it's intended to do is the life we all strive for. I'm so jealous of you!

Would have expected far less of a dickwad response from a Beaver fan

Well, I guess you can take comfort in knowing that a Beaver fan didn't post it.

Roll over again Steve, it ain't getting better. The only good news coming out of Apple seems to be the mega-millions being paid to the brass.

And those mega millions are coming from all the mugs that keep blindly marching back to the Apple Store like a bunch of zombies, wallet in hand, ready to buy any old rubbish Apple produce.

If Apple's products aren't up to par, DON'T BUY THEM! The only way Apple will change their ways is when sales start to drop.

I disagree with the OP, I thought it was blindingly obvious it would not work with such systems.

However, the whole "first world problem" thing seems to be becoming a bit of a troll meme right now. It's incredibly pretentious and hypocritical, and given the context of this forum it does not actually make sense.

It's just used as a cheap shot against an argument they disagree with, while at the same time inferring that the person saying it (for the billionth time) has the moral high-ground and therefor makes their opinion more valid.

I would suggest people stop using it, as it just makes them look stupid. If people really care about first world / third world problems, then I don't know why they are on an iPhone forum.

Rather than spending time reading threads on a first world forum and first world products, then bizarrely spewing "first world problem", would be better spent occupying yourself with some charity work for the third world you care so dearly about.

Upset at the use of a meme? #firstworldproblem

Just thought you might like some insight into how idiotic it makes you look ;)

Well, fortunately for myself, I don't care how you think I look and the fact that you posted that long ass post in regards to it is pretty hilarious.

I don't know what's more annoying, the stupid "first world problem" saying, as if we're on a Peace Corps message board and not one about Apple products, or people who use hashtags on all their words as if they mean something outside of Twitter.

Because it doesn't work the way you would like with your alarm clock it's a piece of crap? Ok....

I finally got my Lightning to 30-pin adapter in. I put it on my iHome alarm clock so I can finally charge my iPhone 5 on my nightstand.

The first thing that I noticed about it is that my phone is crazy high in the dock and it looks like it is going to tip over the back. No bueno.

The biggest problem with it though is that when I pull my phone out of the dock, the adapter comes right out with it. The only way to get it out of the dock cleanly is to hold the adapter with one hand and lift the phone out with the other hand. The first thing that I reach for in the morning is my phone, so this is going to be extremely inconvenient.

I will certainly buy a Lightning compatible iHome once they are released, but judging by all of the news, we'd be lucky to see one before Christmas!

Anybody else get their adapter today and hate it?

I was smart enough to order the 0.2m adapter because the regular one was obviously not going to work well with my iHome.

Thanks to my vastly superior intelligence, I'm not going to have the problems you're having. My phone will lay happily next to the iHome and work perfectly in every way.

Try thinking a bit next time. :)

(and yes, this post is mostly tongue-in-cheek)

To the OP + others with same problem there is a cheap short-term fix;

Buy a short dock extender cable (30 pin male to 30 pin female) off eBay for a couple of dollars. Plug one end into the dock and put the new adaptor on the other end. Then the iPhone can just safely lie next to it.

Not ideal but might help until other better solutions are available.

apple seriously is gonna charge 39 bucks for the 0.2 adapter?

thats absurd

Yeah, I used to think the same but try buying one when they release it.
As soon as they stock the shelves at Apple Store, they all sell immediately.
Why do they charge so much? Because the Apple drones (me included) will pay.

Let me get this straight.... apple is the worst company in the world and money hungry and going to go under soon because an adapter for outdated technology doesn't stay on the dock you plug it into. lol.

haha, agreed. I actually love the new lightening cable and while it does suck that I have to buy new accessories (when they eventually come out), I am okay with it because the lightening adapter feels so much more secure to me than the other one. This is always the problem when you buy something right when it comes out, you have to deal with not a lot of accessories being available but I'll deal with that to have my iPhone 5. :)

...I assumed it was common knowledge the adapter wasn't for things like vertical docks. Just seems elementary.

I know right. Its amazing the amount of b1tching this is getting compared to the FW400 > FW800 transition or even the new Thunderbolt jack. People paid around 100 for each extra MacBook powersupply and they didn't bitch like this over a $20 - $30 cable or adapter.

How about this, if you have a lot invested in docks how about you don't upgrade phones until cheaper adapters are available. Or you could buy the adapter cable because your phone is obviously going to sit too hit witht he block adapter.

YES. I'll be honest I actually said even with my iPhone 4 'they need to get rid of this connector it's ****' so I guess I'm a bit biased but the ALMOST 11 YEAR OLD CONNECTOR WAS A BIT OUT OF DATE FOR ME

What did you expect? No, really. Please enlighten us to what alternate universe that you were in being unable to understand how it would work just by looking at the thing...

Oh no! :(

#firstworldproblems
Actually, the real problem is that Apple should have released the specs for the Lightning connector a few months ahead of time, so at least updated 3rd party accessories could be available at the release of the iPhone 5. Big steaming pile of FAIL by Apple for not doing so. :(

You want the one with the cable so that you can plug your phone in then lay it on your nightstand or etc. that's what I have. The phone standing up that high is not good and will either end up breaking off the lightning inside of there or etc.

so TRUE!! They are allowed to change it after 11 years. I was comparing the "jiggling" today with my ipod in the dock and it is the 30-pin plug as to why it doesn't feel secure, it has nothing to (in my opinion) with the lightining connector and the adapter. It just is not a really secure charging port anyway.

I wonder if maybe they did because of the third party ones that they are having to recall, maybe there were some issues with it or they didn't have it fully decided until in September (when most of our phones were produced?) and so there wasn't time.

I would much rather have my phone and limited accessories than wait for them to release a phone until there were adequate accessories for it.

1. Will the iHome even work as an alarm clock with the iPhone music using the adapter cable, since I thought I read the adapters didn't support the docks controlling the iPhone controls.

2. Has anyone seen any info about when an iPhone 5 iHome or similar device will be available?
