And your point is?

My point is the whole "first world problems" line is stupid on a forum about expensive, $1,000+ Apple products.

To all you people that replied with snarky responses to this thread, grow the hell up. You berated me for complaining about the adapter, yet I gave two solid suggestions that would have made it more functional for a lot of people out there.

You people need to wake up and realized that Apple dropped the ball on this big time.

  • They did not publish the Lightning specifications until late September
  • They will not allow anybody to make adapters without a pre-approved factory
  • They have not approved a single third party Lightning factory for production
  • They did not ship the Lightning to 30-pin adapter for almost 3 weeks after launch.
  • They have still not shipped the Lightning to 30 pin cable 3 weeks later

Many of your guys' reading comprehension skills need to be refined. Nobody is complaining that there is a new connector. We are complaining that Apple released an adapter and is keeping a monopoly on the supply of accessories, at least for the time being.

Your attitude towards people that bring up differing views from you is deplorable. It's posts like the ones in this thread that prove that this forum is going in the toilet.

The first thing that I noticed about it is that my phone is crazy high in the dock and it looks like it is going to tip over the back. No bueno.
Why would this be a surprise to you, or anyone else?

The biggest problem with it though is that when I pull my phone out of the dock, the adapter comes right out with it. The only way to get it out of the dock cleanly is to hold the adapter with one hand and lift the phone out with the other hand. The first thing that I reach for in the morning is my phone, so this is going to be extremely inconvenient.
Oh, the humanity!

I will certainly buy a Lightning compatible iHome once they are released, but judging by all of the news, we'd be lucky to see one before Christmas!
Why didn't you wait to buy your i5? People like you excoriate Apple for not publishing the connector specs earlier but completely ignore the fact you could have waited until there were i5 versions of your accessories or stayed with your i4/i4s.

Anybody else get their adapter today and hate it?
Yes, i received it and No, I don't hate it.

Apple is going to do things their way as long as the iMarket exists.

The _posts_ here may not be to your liking, yet in no way does that indicate "this forum is going in the toilet"

The _members_ that make these posts have every right to express their opinions.

If you find this too objectionable for you, the solution is rather obvious. It's not called the World Wide Web for nothing.

Choices are wonderful :)

I agree. I have an ihome & an :apple:tv 3. I'm actually thinking about selling the ihome.

people dont realize how amazing an appletv is. i always thought the ihome type docks where pointless. im happy for the change from the 30 pin.

Yeah, I used to think the same but try buying one when they release it.
As soon as they stock the shelves at Apple Store, they all sell immediately.
Why do they charge so much? Because the Apple drones (me included) will pay.

Its my understanding that none of the Apple stores have gotten adapters yet. Have you heard differently?

Roll over again Steve, it ain't getting better. The only good news coming out of Apple seems to be the mega-millions being paid to the brass. If it's any consolation, Apple isn't the first company to have the distinction of enriching those who contributed the least, or those who contributed and now are interested in only themselves.

Yeah the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 are such duds...
I really wish people would stop invoking Steve Jobs on everything.

I received my 30 pin today and not too stoked about it. I had to shave down the connector it's self for it to even fit in my outterbox commuter case, and that case has a big opening in the bottom. I just stuck it on top of my extender I had on my ihome. It isn't ideal and I'm sure as hell not gonna spring for an adaptor and cable for $40. So for now it will work until there is a better 3rd party one I can use or I switch over to some sort if airport express/clock radio.

The adaptor is a lot more shallow then the lighting cable that came with the 5.

Ps the box it came in was huge.

Well, wife and I got iPhone5s today, and like many here we have legacy 30 pin iHome docks in our bedroom that were used for 2.5 years with our iPhone4.

She has this model, http://www.ihomeaudio.com/iP11BV/

From what people have posted here, the 30 to 8 pin adapters do NOT work with these?
The don't charge the iPhone 5s?
The adapters will pull off the iHome, sticking to the bottom of your iPhone 5s upon un-docking , so not good...

Any real solution other have found is appreciated, as these do work fine, we'd rather not buy new ones.

I have the small 40 pin to 8 pin adapters which work for the phone, but not if you have a proprietary apple case on the phone. Then it won't fit. It has to be naked. Poor poor planning on apples part.

30 pin, and actually if you look there is a version that works with most cases. Poor research on your part.

If your iHome uses Apple's Universal Dock standard, you can purchase these (http://flybridge.co/) to help secure the Lightning to 30-Pin adapter.

I've used these for my two iHome clocks and they work well with both iHomes as well as my legacy Apple Universal Docks.

The only caveat is that the Flybridge adapters don't play nice with cases or bumpers.

The 40 was a typo. The rest-not poor research. I've looked fairly extensively, and posted on several different forums-with zero positive feedback from anyone. The one person that attempted to be helpful on this site, posted a link to an adapter (which I purchased) that was in fact NOT compatible with the apple cases.

If you could maybe share your research (provide a link and (if possible) a picture of an adapter that works with the apple proprietary case, it would be appreciated.

The bold portion is the problem. There are lots and lots of adapters out there that work, but hard to find any that work with a case. That seems to be the bigger problem (at least for me).

Oh look I just found an adapter that works with a case!

No it's not cheap, but it is the best solution out there. I use it with this

Saw that (and own three). But that isn't what I (or I assume other people in this thread) were looking for. If we just wanted to run a cable from the 30 pin to the ipod/iphone/ipad, that is easy to find. I also have (several) of the micro usb to 9 pin connectors too.

What is missing in the equation, is a 30 pin to 9 pin adapter, that would simply connect on a dock, then allow the phone (in a case) to sit on the dock, just like it does currently with a 30 pin plug in.

For instance, my iphone 4s, in a case, sits just fine on my alarm clock dock. But because (every single one I have found) the adapter plugs just fine into the 30 pin port, but DOES NOT PLUG INTO AN IPHONE WITH A CASE ON IT (and allows it to sit upright on the dock/clock/whatever), due to the length of the 9 pin portion of the adapter (read: doesn't travel past the depth of the case AND plug into the iphone), it renders the dock, clock, or whatever, irrelevant and does not allow it to be used in the same way as a native 30 pin device.

Did I simplify it enough for you to understand?

I understand just fine, however we all bought into a device that had a proprietary connector.

We're now trying to adapt that connector into another one. There will inevitably be a compromise.

Either convenience (not being able to plug it in with the phone in a case/having to use a cable based adaptor) or strength (think about it, the lightning plug is fairly small and probably quite easy to snap off and the centre of gravity of the whole arrangement changes because the phone is mounted higher than before).

The only other option is to replace our devices with ones that come with lightning docks out of the box. Something I'm not willing to do until the price comes down.

The alarm clocks that we have at home all are made large enough to hold an ipad, so the extra height/weight would not make any difference.

I find it odd that apple actually sells cases, sells adapters, yet doesn't sell an adapter that allows a solid, direct connection from the 30 pin to the 9 pin and still allow a device to sit on any of the (hundreds of) different docks that are already in existence. It would seem to be a simple thing to sell, easily doable, and would make a lot of adapters of the 9 pin devices very happy.

I finally got my Lightning to 30-pin adapter in. I put it on my iHome alarm clock so I can finally charge my iPhone 5 on my nightstand.

The first thing that I noticed about it is that my phone is crazy high in the dock and it looks like it is going to tip over the back. No bueno.

I have 2 black ones for my ihome alarm clock and it's pretty awesome. Only downside is that it won't even fit with the slimmest of cases on. Let me know if you want to see a pic of my set up.

This plus a 30-pin to Lightning dock adapter and you are all set.
Now, the Apple one is $26 or so, copies are anywhere from $2 to $12.
