That's ok this guy bought my current low end Mac Mini for $400 as well, that's what made him want to buy the iMac for $1000, so I guess OS X works wonders on PC users.

EDIT: BTW he will be reselling the Mac Mini when he gets the iMac for $400 to another co worker as well

Did I mention I live in San Antonio, 7th largest US city according to wikipedia.org and we weren't even ranked on the top 30 US cities with highest broadband penetration? People here aren't very computer aware.

If that was enough...
A windows computer CANNOT survive without an antivirus, unless you use some virtualizing software, sandboxing software or you don't open any program at all, never use any external drive, use a strong password and visit very very few websites. Actually being connected to the internet itself is dangerous, a worm could spread through the network and infect you. Apart from the second option, the others are not reasonable. And that option is not 100% effective.

Rubbish. I haven't had AV software since DOS 6.x and my Windows machines are fine.

For those who have been asking... the superbowl isn't over yet. It's only halfway thru the 3rd quarter. No ad as of yet though. It's probably very unlikely. There was an ad with an iMac in it. When I first saw it I almost went nuts! But it turned out to be an ad for something else and the guy in the commercial just happened to be using an imac. darn.

The 1984 ad was shown after the 3rd quarter

hopefully....

This is frigging unbeliable, are you really so worked up about an ad? Seems like the fanboyism here knows no limits. Do you think PC owners or Disney lovers are thinking about ads of all things during super bowl (and don't use the inferior product card, they are not)? I just can't believe you... would you come if they actually showed your computer during the break?

Seriously take a pill. I'm watching the superbowl because I was going to watch the superbowl anyway. Hoping for the Cardinals although it hasn't been looking so good... inching closer though. BTW i am a PC owner

I actually just rewinded back (dvr'd the game) and the 1984 commercial was not shown, at least not in my area. Maybe a local ad took it's place. hmmm

For the love of all that is holy. OF COURSE IT WAS NOT SHOWN!
What would the target demographics even be, you on this forum? Way to spend millions preaching for the crowd. THINK for even a second.

I made that comment because someone had just said that IT WAS shown not because i thought it was going to be or something. Chill.

Good luck with that, I'd recommend doing an online scan at Trend Micro for free. You still have to deal with malicious scripts or exploits that dont require user interaction, sometimes on popular sites. Just a suggestion...

Sorry, what I meant was the ad in 1984, not the "1984" ad.

got it. I really didn't think it would have made much sense this year. I haven't given apple any of my money as of yet for those who seem to think i am throwing it away.

I think a lot of people are forgetting the resell value of Macs due to Apple's marketing strategy.

Resale was much better in the G3/G4/G5 days because you couldn't really compare apples to apples (pun intended) with windows systems. Now you can and all one has to do is look at the processor/ram and know how older/ slower it is.

Plus a similar spec'd iMac vs a Dell i7 system destroys the mac in every benchmark for less money!(which is now 3x faster, has a real video card and supports up to 16GB ram) I would want to buy a refurb/used model too because I wouldn't pay new pricing right now for any of their computer products. So yeah you get more in resell but you also paid 25%-30% more for less hardware to begin with. (Only the Mac Pro, though expensive outright, kills other manufacturers in the workstation class)

I have someone that is willing to pay $1000 for it, any similar stories with 2 yr old PCs that originally cost $1200 + $300 for repairs?

Wow that is just reaching from nowhereville. Search these very forums and lots of apple products have defective GPUs, logic boards, hard drive failures, defective displays etc so it isn't like apple products are magic and stay in pristine condition forever. Yes getting them fixed/applecare is much better than a lot of the competition but lets stay in reality here.

You guys are making me sick! I am about to buy an iMac but you are making me wonder about that decision - I sure as hell don't want to be associated with this crazy and blind cult.

Seriously, what is wrong with you? You are laughing at PCs being 3-4 times cheaper than Macs, saying it's the only way of selling them? I would say most people laugh at you (us) for paying such a premium for nice design. If it was the other way around you'd laugh at expensive PCs. You also think it's a good thing Apple is getting unjust patents, but had it been MS you would gave cried monopoly. Your arguments make no sense when it comes to praising Apple and pissing on it's competitors.

You blind sheep! Discuss the products and stop talking crap about PCs and MS all the time. I always feel nauseous after trying to read this forum for info on new Macs and instead get a dose of your brainwashed chanting.

Get a grip, you are alienating me from buying a Mac, is that what you really want!? You give Apple a bad name...

+1

I don't know why people were thinking Apple was going to have a Super Bowl ad. They have nothing to advertise right now that would make any kind of splash.

It was because someone on this thread said they gave Apple a call and the rep said to watch out for the Superbowl Ad..

I guess March??

With or without the webcam? I've been looking at that display since it came out. What's the picture quality like on that display?

It's without the web cam. I just ordered the PC yesterday, so I haven't gotten in yet. I'll PM and let you know once I do provided I keep the monitor.

Dell sells the monitor for $299. I may put it on eBay to get the Ultrasharp 24", not sure yet.

Quad-core cpu knowledge is indeed beyond the average pc user.

Unfortunately, that's true now. However, once people realize that multi-core processors can dramatically speed up their everyday processor-intensive applications like iMovie, iDVD, QuickTime, iPhoto, etc. That may change.

I look forward to the day when I can open a video file in iMovie and export it to my Apple TV in the same amount of time it takes me to currently save a Pages document as a Word document. :D

I just took my family on vacation to San Antonio this summer. It's a beautiful city, particularly the River Walk area. You also have a very nice Apple Store at La Cantera (or something like that). :)

totally false.

i used my computer for the internet audio production and just like any normal pc without any a antivirus program for over a year with no problems.

maybe im lucky?
but if you know what your doing with your computer its very easy to avoid virus worms spyware etc.

+1 I haven't had any virus issues on Windows, I don't even use anti-virus...

I never said all Macs will run for 2 years with no problems, but mine that has except for the hard drive which I was planning on upgrading anyway has someone willing to pay $1000 for it, can you say the same about any PC that cost about the same and is 2 years old?

I also think you have to take OS into account, now I'm not one of those fanboys that thinks OS X is the best, but I think it does handle limited or older hardware better than Vista (however so does XP), from what I understand Windows 7 isn't as taxing on the hardware, but since that isn't in the final stage yet we will have to wait. Benchmarks do not matter to a lot of consumers, they like to be able to go on the internet, check emails, blog and what not as fast as possible and with little to no problems, and though I (admittedly) do not have any benchmarks or stats to prove it I bet a 2 year old iMac does it faster than a 2 year old PC. Remember that unfortunetly Apple is not catoring to the Pro market anymore, it's all about the consumer. Most consumers don't know anything about benchmarks, most consumers (unless gamers) don't push their video card, RAM, or even processor. What consumers do know is that they deal with virii which makes Mac OS X a real treasure in their mind.

Oh it's a nice city (except for the heat), one of those big cities that has the advantages of a big cities yet feels like a small city, however we only have 3 major broadband internet providers, Time Warner Cable, AT&T, and Grande Cable which is what I use. The internet just doesn't seem as common in San Antonio as it does in other cities, I read on MR where people say WiFi spots are everywhere in their city/town, not here, unless it's a private home that hasn't got any protection on their wireless network (which is quite common in SA).

Be quiet about it - you'll make the fanbois wonder about some of their fundamental beliefs.

If you have something good, you talk about it. If not, you talk about the supposed bad things that the other guy has.

"Mac vs. PC" - say no more....

I've heard a lot of people say things like "if you use common sense you won't get a virus on Windows" and I do agree that's true, as I've never got a virus on Windows (and I've only used XP, never Vista) but has anyone forgotten the saying that common sense isn't that common?

Only if I can convince someone that it's worth that much.

Which means users like us aren't the target anymore but the convinced masses with a disposable income. We can vote with our purchases but I'm sure there are plenty of other people that haven't become as jaded as us about the true realization of Apple's hardware.

Yeah with Apple and MS competing on different levels (one controls all hardware and makes a good OS, one runs on almost any hardware but doesn't make as good an OS-IMO) we're kind of in the paradox of damned if you do, damned if you don't, I'm pretty sure if they competed on the same level (as things stand without considering Windows 7 since it's not in final release) OS X would have double or even triple of the market share it does, but Apple doesn't seem to care as much about market share as it does profit margins.

EDIT: but when all is said and done it comes down to what fits to your needs, even knowing Apple's faults (as many on this forum do) I will still be buying an iMac (refurbished current low end 24"), not because it's the biggest baddest computer around, but because it suits my needs, however I do use my iMac unlike many other people seem to, it is my TV/computer that sits in my room next to my bed and is always on (space is a major issue for me), right now as it is I use my MacBook for most things and my iMac more as a back up/HTPC, and I don't see that changing even with the one I plan to get. Right now I don't think there is any 'perfect' solution, official OS X is run on limited hardware, which is the better OS (IMO again), Windows Vista is run on almost any hardware but the OS is the fault there, there's always hackintosh but that's iffy, I'm really rooting for Windows 7 but I haven't tried the beta, perhaps we'll never have the perfect OS to match the perfect hardware, all we can do is keep trying to improve though.
