Based off posts in this thread went to stonestown this morning at 10am figuring I'd be there a couple hours max. I finally left the apple store with 8gb black and receipt in hand around 4:30pm!

The setup there is pretty horrendous. Basically the line starts outside the mall and they can only allow roughly 10-15 ppl or so to wait in line directly outside the apple store in the mall. They would come out and let groups of 10-15 in at a time and this was roughly EVERY HOUR!. Their estimate was that on average it takes 15 min to process a customer and that is provided that there are no hangups with the account (or that they need to be given a handholding tutorial like these two late 50's early 60s women apparently needed 5 ppl ahead of me. As I got closer towards being in the group that got let into the mall it seems like they were reducing the number of ppl they were allowing in. By the time it got to my group they only let me and 4 other people in to wait in ANOTHER line directly outside the apple store.

I probably got let into the mall around 3:45pm or so and it was easily another 30-45 min before it was my turn. The way they have it setup is the iphone line is roped off and goes directly into the front left part of the store which is basically separated off and there were only about 4 employees actually processing customers. So if you went off the average of 4 customers per hour per employee (15 min each one) you can do the math and see how long its gonna take.

They were doing a fairly good job of making sure people knew what they needed and in my case and a couple others in particular since I had my account on a corporate discount (which I called in and had them remove before I got there because I knew that apple stores can't process those types of accounts) they offered to run a prequalification to make sure there would not be any problems once we got in. They asked for

Name
last 4 digits of social security
mobile number

about 2 hours after I had given them that info someone came out and let me know that I was good to go. Up until that point I had been considering going up to the ATT store in the same mall and ordering one. A couple people had left the line at the apple store and said that they ordered at ATT and were told it would be there in 3 days. I had heard att stores were experiencing issues with backorders so wasnt too sure I wanted to go that route. I later heard some of the apple employees say it has been taking the ATT stores on average about 2-3 weeks to fill orders. So I almost left the line out of fear I was gonna wait 6 hours and ultimately get screwed because they couldn't work with my account. Once I found out it was good I kinda sucked it up and rode out the wait.

They also did a good job of early on getting a tally of what everyone in line wanted and were able to tell us by about 11:30am that everyone in line at that point would be able to get a phone.

Man that was alot to type but I figured if I had this information beforehand I may have thought twice about going. Since stonestown appears to be the store that is getting the most shipments expect a long wait. If you are going to go I would suggest getting there early and be prepared to commit the whole day.

Hope this helps others in the area.

Stonestown Apple Store

I got my 16GB Black Iphone 3G today at the Stonestown Apple Store in SF. All together it took no more than 2 hours and 45 minutes. I showed up at 7:45 expecting a 10:00am opening, but to my delight found out that the doors were opening at 8am. I was roughly the 20th person in line and was out of there by 10:30. Show up early and you will be rewarded.

On launch day we headed to the Stockton St store downtown after work and saw the line go around the corner to the parking garage on O'Farrell... So we headed to Stonestown.

Got there around 6pm and lined up.

At 10:30pm we finally made it into the line inside the mall.

At 11:05pm the "AT&T servers went down"... So we were given a fast track ticket to come back the next day. They took note of what we wanted (to reserve them/make sure they didn't sell out of what people had lined up for) and sent about 50 people on their merry way home.

When we bowled up at 10am on the Saturday, the line was all the way back to Macy's outside. We headed to the store, flashed the fast track ticket and were escorted in ahead of those in the line... They weren't too happy :)

Got two 16gb phones (white and black) and the dude signing us up screwed up and created two separate accounts with one line in each. Quick trip to the AT&T store fixed that.

It was an incredibly painful experience... A lot of people were saying "I can't believe we're doing this for a phone" - I was one of them. But there were just as many people saying "it's not just a phone"...

Drove past Stonestown tonight and the line was long...

I went to the Oakridge Mall in San Jose today at 9am and there were only 3 people in line. I got my iphone in as little as 15 minutes. When I left, the line grew to 20 people. They say on the website that the store opens at 10, but apparently, they were already taking in customers at 9am. So go there early, if it's in stock. I went to the Valley Fair mall 2 days ago and saw over 100 people in line at the same time, so goto the Oakridge Mall instead. Hope this helps.

In downtown San Francisco next to the baseball stadium, a new AT&T store just opened up literally.....2 hours ago. It is across the street from my apartment and every day I saw a "Coming Soon" sign. This morning, I saw a "Now Open" and I walked in.

There were 20 AT&T employees in their brand new uniforms staring at me as if they've never seen a customer before. (I actually think I was their very first customer)

I asked them that I wanted a 16 GB iPhone and they said they'd order me one. They expect it to arrive in the store in 1-2 weeks. So I signed up for it. They said that if I end up going to the Apple Store or another AT&T store BEFORE my pre-order arrives, I can just buy it from there and call them to cancel. So, if the SF Apple store does get a big shipment soon, I might check it out. (although someone said that today a memo was sent out to Apple stores saying they aren't allowed to sell iPhones to people who have done "Direct Fufillment" orders already with AT&T)

That explains a lot. I went in there with some questions about my account and the guy had to run in the back and ask someone about it every time. I also asked to have my FAN number applied, and first it took them forever to find my school (I was told because my school was in Utah they couldn't see it, but they also thought Utah was in Texas...) and when they did they said it would be the same discount as my job, and told me he applied my discount. I just checked my account online yesterday and it's not there. I was also told I would have to go to an Apple store to cancel my additional line I got for a friend. Apple doesn't have the ability to cancel anything.

Regarding the Oakridge Apple store, I think it would have been faster if it wasn't such a small store. The line didn't move at all for nearly an hour when I got there. I think a lot of people were having problems with their AT&T account, or had a FAN number on the account and it needed to be removed before they could sign you up.

FINALLY...I have my iPhone. I was originally going to wait until August so I didn't have to deal with the crowds, but last week my only phone (crappy Verizon cell phone) died. Instead of paying the 60 bucks Verizon wanted to repair it, I started searching for an iPhone sooner than I planned.

Yesterday (july 25th), I went to the Apple Store at about 1:45 pm. It took almost exactly 2 hours to get my iPhone. (the time went faster than I thought...I had a few audio podcasts loaded on my iPod) I purchased a 16 GB Black. (I was worried the whole time because an Apple employee said that they only had a handful left...luckilly I was able to get one)

I did run into some major porting problems trying to get my Verizon phone number onto my iPhone. It has to do with the area code and ZIP code matching. (AT&T wanted my billing address and current location to be in Cleveland, where my Verizon phone is from...still have that area code) That took about 30 minutes to figure out. The Apple guy was very helpful - almost to the point of making up a fake Cleveland address to fool AT&T's stupid porting system)

After I bought my iPhone, I stopped by the AT&T store where I had a DF order. Only one person on that waiting list had received a phone and everyone else's order was pending, so I thought the sooner I cancelled my order, the faster someone else who had a 16 GB Black DFed could get theirs. AT&T wouldn't let me cancel my order. They said it will take about 2 weeks for my phone to ship. (I was #9 in queue and had ordered it on the 18th) They said once it arrives, I have to come into the store and THEN they'll refund my 299. But the worst part is, they will then SEND THE IPHONE BACK TO THE AT&T FACTORY. I told them that seemed pretty silly since I'm sure there are many people at that store that have DFed a 16 GB black. They told me that they were just following policy.

If you are in the Bay area and still don't have an iPhone, you are pretty much guaranteed to get one if you go to the San Francisco Apple Store anytime in the AM or early afternoon. If you are on DF with AT&T, be prepared to wait. They get very little shipments and depending on the store, they may not get ANY shipments. My DF is at a brand new AT&T store near the baseball stadium and only 1 person out of the 50+ people has had their iPhone shipped. They are going at the rate of 1 iPhone/week.

Good luck!

I just went to the AT&T store in Brentwood today and there were a few people in line waiting for the 3G, but nothing to crazy. So if you live in the East Bay Area try the Brentwood store off of Lone Tree. :D
