I want to get a 4s, but I'm not waiting in line for one. I'll probably wait till next week. How long does it usually take for the lines to calm down?

For the iPhone 3GS and 4, there were lines each morning at many Apple Stores for about 3-4 weeks after launch.

That's crazy.

I'm glad my pre-order went smoothly (so far, cross my fingers).

I'm anxious to get my new iPhone -- i've been stuck with a dumb-phone for the last 3 months -- but there's no way I would get in line like that.

I did that once to get my iPad and I couldn't stand it -- and that was just for a couple of hours. I won't do that again.

Why the heck can't they give these people numbers and tell them to come back tomorrow? Seems cruel to make them wait all night when all the store needs is proof they were there first.

They're already putting out barriers and such, so they obviously have the fact that people will be waiting in mind. Is it that hard to set up a ticket system?
They need to make it painful for them. It boggles my mind why these people don't preorder the thing. It took me 5 minutes to preorder mine. So let them be miserable and wait. LOL

What would suck is you wait in line for hours and hours to be the next next one in and they say sorry were all sold out... Happened to me with a game system, It really sucked... So now I just pr-order things...

They give out tickets and/or warn of low supply levels.

Why would Apple be so stupid as to ruin the best possible public display of how much people WANT their products? You can't buy that kind of love! And you want to hand out a number and turn them away? Stupid.

I love Apple Stores, but dont folks know to avoid them at all cost during a new iPhone launch?
Find a not too busy AT&T/Verizon/Sprint store and get there early that morning. Mine will be delivered tomorrow, but Im going to AT&T here in Hagerstown to get one for my brother...gonna be there 5:30am, store opens at 8:00am.

Wow... I'm surprised there are negative comments from people here about people standing in line for a phone?

I mean, to each their own, but they're just tech junkies going in for a quick fix and if it makes them happy... cool.

Luckily, if I want one, I should be able to just go get one tomorrow. Where I live is a slow place for technology, however, have a potato pancake sales and people would be in line for miles! LOL!

The thing is the store would need to set a time to start giving the tickets out, otherwise people would be there a week early to pick the tickets up.

So if there is a set time that the tickets get given out, people would line up hours in advance for the tickets.

Exactly. Either way, there's going to be a line

Don't these people have the INTERNET?!?!:p

It was easier to just pre-order the thing...I'm glad I don't have to wait in line all night.

Because some people can't pre-order them. If you purchase through the carriers (which Verizon was successfully pre-ordering an hour before Apple's website this time) they sometimes require the shipping address and billing address to be the same. So this rules out travelers, those away from home, students, etc.

Do people not understand that this phone isnt that much different from the 4??:confused::confused:

I think YOU do not understand that it's WAY different.

It's faster. More mega pixels. 1080p video. Way faster graphics. Siri. Faster downloads and uploads. Better lens. Most storage options. Different antenna setup and works as world phone for other carries. BT 4.

What's it missing? A better front facing camera. A light for the front facing camera.

What's the same? They didn't change the awesome display (thank you for that!). The case (who cares!) it fits all my accessories.

I got the original iPhone and the 3GS on launch day without lines by going to my local Apple store in the evening (I forget 6-7 -probably). The place was humming but I didn't have to wait at all.

I guess it works like this: before they run out of stock, but after all the crazies.

Of course, I can't guarantee they'll be in stock at your Apple store tonight, but it might a try. Maybe just call ahead (I seem to remember one time I could check a web site to see if they had stock).

I hate those idiots waiting in line for a mobile phone. They're the cancer of the consumer society.

Yeah, it's almost as bad as having an account on some website where you sit around posting ABOUT cell phones with other strangers.

At least the line waiters can be thankful they haven't sunk quite that low yet.

Some do it out of ignorance. Others do it out of fear of lack of stock (which is true, carrier stores don't get all that many). Some just do it for the camaraderie and experience.

And call me cynical but some people, not interested in the 4s would grab a ticket and then sell it for a fortune... hang on, why aren't I on a train to London?

*slaps forehead*

On that note, why don't people just GET IN LINE and then SELL their SPOTS for money, then keep getting back into line, etc. You may have made yourself a free iPhone by the end of the day.

Friday

Just wait, CNN will have a nimrod holding up the phone outside the apple store with people clapping for him.. Like he found the golden ticket...

I remember that guy from the NYC store on TV... I was like Gezzz, Really its a phone, they make millions of them. Now go call your mom... LOL

Wasn't this supposed to be a flop because it didn't have ridiculous specs and a flame-thrower attached?

Oh wait, Apple devotes themselves to perfecting the User Experience. Best way to flop-proof your products.

:apple:

User experience, like icloud and iOS5 setup?

Oh and ...

There were people paying the homeless in NYC to hold the spot in line..

Really.....

Admit it - you approve of this ridiculous behavior.

That's true. Except after the order went through on Apple.com, I just edited the order and changed the delivery address to my own place. It's on its way here now, though the address is different on AT&T.

I can't imagine many people knew to try that, though.

Well this is cool.

500 people in the queue in George st Sydney. Still an hour to go till opening and people lining up quickly. Wow

Yeah, you start to wonder when a Society cares more about a "Pretty Cellphone" over the welfare of their fellow human beings...

Then there would be a line for the numbers, ldo.

You expect a massive move to a new cloud-based system to go off without a hitch? Especially when all the fans (and haters, too) on tech sites are dying to be among the first to slam the poor servers in question?

If so, there's some lovely swampland down in my neck of the woods you'd be interested in. Real primo property. Don't worry, the crocodiles are just a "water feature."

This is Apple we're talking about. Underestimating crushing demand is normal. This always happens. And the worst that happened this time is a couple of hours of e-mail downtime. Considering the enormity of this transition, I'm quite impressed.
