Some do it out of ignorance. Others do it out of fear of lack of stock (which is true, carrier stores don't get all that many). Some just do it for the camaraderie and experience.
It's the Apple Semi-Annual Worldwide User Group Meetup.

That's true. Except after the order went through on Apple.com, I just edited the order and changed the delivery address to my own place. It's on its way here now, though the address is different on AT&T.
I can't imagine many people knew to try that, though.
My local Apple store said even though it was an outdoor mall that mall cops would prevent overnight lines ...
Why the heck can't they give these people numbers and tell them to come back tomorrow? Seems cruel to make them wait all night when all the store needs is proof they were there first. They're already putting out barriers and such, so they obviously have the fact that people will be waiting in mind. Is it that hard to set up a ticket system?
At the Apple Store, The Gateway in Salt Lake City there is a line. I am in it. People have been here since 10:00 p.m. MT on Wednesday.

I want to get a 4s, but I'm not waiting in line for one. I'll probably wait till next week. How long does it usually take for the lines to calm down?
Do people not understand that this phone isnt that much different from the 4??![]()
Yeah, you start to wonder when a Society cares more about a "Pretty Cellphone" over the welfare of their fellow human beings...![]()
You expect a massive move to a new cloud-based system to go off without a hitch? Especially when all the fans (and haters, too) on tech sites are dying to be among the first to slam the poor servers in question?
If so, there's some lovely swampland down in my neck of the woods you'd be interested in. Real primo property. Don't worry, the crocodiles are just a "water feature."
This is Apple we're talking about. Underestimating crushing demand is normal. This always happens. And the worst that happened this time is a couple of hours of e-mail downtime. Considering the enormity of this transition, I'm quite impressed.
Pre-ordering on apple.com doesn't require the shipping address to be the same as the carrier's account billing address.

iPhone 4S line in George Street Sydney is about 250 meters long, and we have been here since 8:30 pm last night 10.5hrs now.
The only Apple stores near me are in malls that open at 10am. AT&T Store, however, open at 8am and will have stock. I plan on getting to my local store at 6am, maybe 5am. I really want that 3rd iPhone 4S....![]()
