Lines Begin Forming at Apple Retail Stores Ahead of iPhone 4S Launch

That's true. Except after the order went through on Apple.com, I just edited the order and changed the delivery address to my own place. It's on its way here now, though the address is different on AT&T.

I can't imagine many people knew to try that, though.

Pre-ordering on apple.com doesn't require the shipping address to be the same as the carrier's account billing address.

Why the heck can't they give these people numbers and tell them to come back tomorrow? Seems cruel to make them wait all night when all the store needs is proof they were there first. They're already putting out barriers and such, so they obviously have the fact that people will be waiting in mind. Is it that hard to set up a ticket system?

They did offer all of them a way to preorder and have it delivered to them (and maybe even store pickup). The people who ordered on-line are first. These people may not even get a phone!

This is good free PR for Apple to have all these people standing in line.

Mine should be here tonight or tomorrow.

For some people it's part of the experience. By the way, they choose to be there....

I want to get a 4s, but I'm not waiting in line for one. I'll probably wait till next week. How long does it usually take for the lines to calm down?

Couple of months if the iPhone 4 is anything to go by...

Do people not understand that this phone isnt that much different from the 4??:confused::confused:

The only thing that HASN'T changed in this phone is the screen.

Gonna wait in line... at the door when the UPS guy delivers my phone tomorrow. :p

I remember walking past the line at 0700 AM @ the Best Buy last year for the iPhone 4, knocking on the door, giving the guy my name, and then walking out with my iPhone about 10 minutes later with a bunch of line peeps wondering how the hell I had pulled that off..

Preorder... it's not a mystery.. I don't understand the draw of the line. I waited in line (45 people long) for about 45 minutes at a BestBuy while I was in Hunstville, AL this March for the iPad 2 (the apple store down the road had over 900-1000 people in line!!) and it was annoying. Couldn't imagine doing that for hours or days.

That said... :apple: Have 'fun' out there...

badge of honor... or horror?

Yeah, you start to wonder when a Society cares more about a "Pretty Cellphone" over the welfare of their fellow human beings...

I recall a few posts days back that people were upset that Apple did not make the 4S distinct, and looked just the same. Like people wanting other people to know that they have the latest phone, Like using it and enjoying the features was not enough. These were the same people with plastic cell phones in the early 90s driving around talking to no one...

I for one dont want anyone to know I have a 4S - yes jack my phone as im walking to my car... At least the would be robbers dont know if you have a 200 dollar 4 or an 800 S.

One time I'll have to experience 'Phonestock' in person. It will have to be in L.A. or NYC though, as I'm an action junkie! I bet it's a groovy experience! Living off of reds, vitamin c, and IOS would be cool for a day! :D

If people want to camp, I say let it be. Variety is the spice of life.

You get a ticket so you can't miss out now. Was like that for iPad 2 and now iPhone 4S

I wish I could pre-order, but where I live everyone has a PO box, as there's no home mail delivery. My billing address is my PO box, they won't ship a phone to a PO Box, and they won't ship it to my home address since it's not the same as my billing address. So I'm stuck every time having to get in line. Thankfully this time I can't upgrade until the end of November, so hopefully the lines/demand will have settled down by then.

You expect a massive move to a new cloud-based system to go off without a hitch? Especially when all the fans (and haters, too) on tech sites are dying to be among the first to slam the poor servers in question?

If so, there's some lovely swampland down in my neck of the woods you'd be interested in. Real primo property. Don't worry, the crocodiles are just a "water feature."

This is Apple we're talking about. Underestimating crushing demand is normal. This always happens. And the worst that happened this time is a couple of hours of e-mail downtime. Considering the enormity of this transition, I'm quite impressed.

Apple should have learned to stop underestimating crushing demand a long time ago. And of course you're quite impressed. It's Apple.

OMG i admire the patience tbh, i could never stand in line that long. i waited 20 mins for my iPhone 4 on launch day and it already drove me craaaaaaaazy.

Impatient

I am stuck at work but as soon as I get out of here and finish with the family dinner, I'll be at the Apple store!! Can't wait!

AT&T Stores

The only Apple stores near me are in malls that open at 10am. AT&T Store, however, open at 8am and will have stock. I plan on getting to my local store at 6am, maybe 5am. I really want that 3rd iPhone 4S.... :p

It's actually nice waiting in line, fun chatting with others there, but I decided to get mine by mail this time, hope it comes in the morning!

Yanno, I don't really care if people pre-order or not. I do, because I hate crowds, but if I were younger with no responsibilities, I could see where lining up would seem like an all night party. More power to them. Hope they have a great time.

iPhone 4S line in George Street Sydney is about 250 meters long, and we have been here since 8:30 pm last night 10.5hrs now.

You make me sad.

Most malls in the United States open for business at 10am. The Apple stores will be opening at 8:00am for this.

Sorry to leave this reply, but I think it's a shame how superficial the world turned ... Of course I admire Apple and Mr Jobs for this amazing global cultural change that they made, but I think it's a shame to see a person waiting on lines for over 24h to buy a cell phone, but it's my opinion. A few days ago, here in Brazil, I saw on TV a discussion about how the death of Mr Jobs will affect the technology industry, and one guy (a person how claims to be an expert on the subject), said that nothing will change in the world, but I disagree, I can't see a company or a person capable to convince a bunch of people to sleep in front of a store to buy a product that they don't need to survive...

People always say the same thing,,, " I don't understand why....",,,, well maybe because it's a great product, with a loyal dedicated following . Maybe all those naysayers, can't pick up what Apple is putting down.... I can agree as I get older that maybe this is a little superficial, but so is getting UNC vs Duke tickets or going to an Epic event. I can't explain why people love the iPhone and iPad so much, but I know they do and until somebody bottles it and gives it to the competition......Apple will still be King. Every time we talk about Android, Blackberry and iPhones at work,, I alway end with this point.... You will never see this type of demand for any other phone!
