I'm so avant garde I hate every band ever. I only listen to acts that play in their own garages. As soon as they get a pub gig I reject them as lyrical sell-outs and move on. I also post about it on the internet. Voted negative for this story.

I love you a little.

---

Sure, I don't like Linkin Park a whole lot, but what does it matter? If having to put up with LP mid-keynote bothers you, it's not a big deal to fast-forward.

If they had Radiohead playing, I wouldn't FF. I would dearly love to see Steve Jobs have a dance-off with Thom Yorke during Idioteque.

Well I just went on youtube, found a linkin park video, watched it... and the conclusion is that they do in fact suck.

How formulaic can you be?

Ben Folds was right on (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlGCTWL6djo) even if he wrote that song about Korn.

pretty sure that song was about limp bizkit. ben folds dons the trademark red cap when he plays it live. but regardless, that song is classic! that and limp bizkit and korn are basically interchangeable.

Appreciation of music is subjective, but history of music is a science.
History is not science. Do you also think astrology is science?

This really has nothing to do with snobbery. It indeed has more to do with knowing what the frick about music. And don't give me that "but it sounds good!" BS. That's how the Nazis took over Germany!
You l like the sound of C better than C#? Oh noes!!! But that is how the Nazis took over Germany!!!

i haven't had a chance to read all the way through the posts on this thread... but has anyone confirmed that media/press has been invited to an event tomorrow? i've seen a few posts citing Linkin Park's tour schedule... showing that they'll be in NY tomorrow. and I think I saw someone saying a 'source' told them the MBPs might be coming tomorrow (I've heard that before). I was just wondering if any media has been invited, because if apple is releasing anything I'm sure they'll want cameras there.

i forgot to add...

i'm also sorta confused by this... if this linkin park thing is really planned to coincide with the SDK release and/or MBP update (or any hardware release, really)... why? there seems to be no connection  has apple historically had musical guests for releases that are not music/itunes related? (i mean aside from MAJOR events like Macworld)

could it possibly just be like a surprise in-store performance?

Well I didn't mean literally, though you by all means have the right to point that out. I meant that history is typically supported by facts and concrete evidence, conjecture, and all that. In that regard, it is much more like science than art.

My point was that we can argue all day whether or not a band has a good sound to us, but something we can't really argue (though on forums any argument is possible I suppose) is the history of music. If you are a popular music nerd like I am, you'll understand what I mean when I say Linkin Park sucks.

Please just remember music nerd =/= music snob.

For example, almost everyone loves Zep. I don't really care for them that much, mostly because I don't really dig arena rock for obvious reasons, but at the same time, they certainly don't suck. I reserve the word "suck" for a very specific instance, and that is usually Linkin Park and Dave Matthews Band. When you look at popular music from an analytical approach, there is certainly an objective means for deciding what "sucks."

:D

Bottom line: Musical taste is subjective, and in terms of popularity, talent is arbitrary.

Some people like screaming and simple power chord progressions; some don't. Is there really need to argue about it? LP is an A list band. They sell out shows, so maybe Apple is simply trying to appeal to different audiences.

P.S. Regardless of ones interest in LP. This rumor is a good sign and certainly more credible than the, "I know a guy who knows a guy" rumors we've been dealing with since MWSF 2008. (That said, I still believe Tailpipe).

Atleast some people on this board have some sense.

Linkin Park is a roller-coaster, Linkin Park is a roller-coaster, Linkin Park is a roller-coaster...
Because like a roller coaster, Linkin Park may seem dangerous or appear rebellious while in fact it’s perfectly safe for family fun, the danger is an illusion, and they’ve been duped by marketing hype.

Who's looking for danger? This is music.

What I don't understand is why people hate on certain artists. If you don't listen to them who the hell cares. Did Linkin Park touch you at night?

This is why some people care:

... talent is arbitrary.

People care because we, as the human race, have a vested cultural interest in making sure that we have only people with talent performing music. Talent can be developed, those without it are simply not interested in developing it (or too lazy).

You know, just because you don't give a flying bleep about a band does not mean that no one else has the right to. Popular music, like government, is something we all own, and must take responsibility for. We elect popular artists like we elect officials.

If you don't understand what I'm talking about, great, who cares. But don't just say stupid crap like people don't have the right to mention anything bad about your favorite band or whatever. It's like saying people can't attack Bush. That gets you labeled as a "fascist," why shouldn't what you people are saying?

That to me right there says music snob.

I never said that no one has the right to hate. I don't care, hate all you want, say this band sucks, or that artist has no talent. I just see it as pointless, when you should be enjoying music for what it is.

You're comparing popular music to the government? Get the hell out of here. The government runs our lives, pop music, not so much. Sure I support artists I like, but if they make an album I don't like, I sure as hope it doesn't effect my life as a citizen of this country. I think the entertainment business has got into your head a little too much.

1) Government is not here to "run our lives" go read the constitution.
2) Music DOES run some people's lives. For some, their entire life revolves around music. It really doesn't matter to you, and that's fine. Think of it how some people here have their lives revolve around Apple. We think it's pretty geeky, but to them it's an entire lifestyle.
3) The fact that you see it as an "entertainment business" punctuates what is wrong with Linkin Park and all the other "entertainers." Musicians do not (or should not I suppose) exists solely to entertain people.

I think you watch a little too much MTV dude. It's fine, we probably all do. I hate to sound like one of those FREE YOUR MIND DUDE people, but like I said it's not about "entertainment." There used to be a degree of artistic integrity within popular music.

Except the US government ban the US media from filming dead troops coming back from Iraq? I'd say that's not freedom of speech !!!

Government = Media = same sh*t
Have you watched Bowling For Columbine ???
This nation is run on fear.

I am a music snob and I can't stand Linkin Park. There. I said it. How many people who first heard them when their age did not end it end in "teen" actually like them?

I'm a little annoyed that Apple would want to give money to those dopes to hear them play, but whatever. If Apple associated with the music-snob type bands I like then 10 people would show up with their arms folded and quietly nod their heads. Sweet.

Also a bit let down that there is a Zune commercial with the Shins and an HP add with Flaming Lips. It's only slightly more fun to love a band than it is to hate on some other band.

This. THIS.

Apple has been bested in cool points. Is this what you people want to happen?! This has been Apple's entire strategy for a decade!

I need to get out more. I have not even heard of Linkin Park. Then again, I am over 45.

Other than the fact that Linkin Park is an affront to people with good musical taste, they simply are the wrong marketing message for apple. That's what's wrong with Linkin Park.

Apple's whole point is being innovative, creative, hip, and useful. Everything that Linkin Park is not. The world would not be a worse place if Linkin Park did not exist.

Who's up for signing a petition to Apple's marketing department? We cannot sit idly by and let this happen.

Linkin Park are still alive? I assumed they died along with the likes of Limp Biscuit...

Good point; you may also add modern Metallica and Korn (with that stupidly arrogant four-eyed member) to the equation. I am happy to see that, apart from some PC lovers in this forum, there are still people with some sense of taste in music.

Linkin Park and any other nu-metal band (notably those coming from the US) suck, period. Anyone who disagrees with this simple fact should be suspended from this forum.

1) Government is not here to "run our lives" go read the constitution.

I didn't mean literally run our lives... but there is truth to that statement, but that's for another debate.

2) Music DOES run some people's lives. For some, their entire life revolves around music. It really doesn't matter to you, and that's fine. Think of it how some people here have their lives revolve around Apple. We think it's pretty geeky, but to them it's an entire lifestyle.

Yea, fanatics, which brings me back to my point. It's not worth getting all worked up about it. We don't work for Apple, we don't work for "whatever band" we are just fans. But even with Mac vs PC, we have things to back us up, with music it's just art.

3) The fact that you see it as an "entertainment business" punctuates what is wrong with Linkin Park and all the other "entertainers." Musicians do not (or should not I suppose) exists solely to entertain people.

What's your point here? If they aren't there to entertain people, I dont' know what they are doing. It's their life, it's a business, unless they purely devote their music making for music sake and their peers, I don't see how pop musicians aren't just there to entertain. I don't know how this got to this point, but I'm just trying to say people take their fanaticism to seriously.

Actually I don't watch any MTV, I stopped watching years ago. Again the degree of artistic integrity in pop music is subjective, to think of pop music as anything other than an entertainment business, is totally delusional.
