Well of course Apple chose an act with wide commercial appeal to please the lowest common denominator. What did you expect? A guy playing avant-garde jazz with a Tibetan nose flute?

Well, there will certainly be plenty of screaming...Linkin Park has that down pat!

In all seriousness, who cares? I mean Linkin Park does suck, but so does John Mayer and just about every musician Apple trots out there for these events. Just show me the damn products already.

This is true... but at least these other artists don't have a singer that doesn't realize you're supposed to stay in key.

Cheers for that. Thanks for insulting a load of people's personal taste, including mine. How about you say what you like so I can say how f***ing s*** they are?

Just because you don't like something doesn't mean its bad

/rant

You're really insulted because the guy doesn't like a band you like? I'm going to assume your post was sarcastic.

fake, I don't even think they would write "Lets be honest, we have 1gb of inventory to clear out".. and also, if its real, go ask him when the new MBP's come out.

I don't understand, you all bitch and moan about the lack of [insert product here] updates and events, and then when an event is "leaked", you all bitch and moan because you hate the band that they got to play at said event. I can't wait until the actual event happens and you then all come here to bitch and moan about the new products or lack thereof.

I've been an active reader of this site for over and year and half, and I've noticed that nobody ever seems happy about anything, theres always a negative aspect it seems. Apple isn't forcing you to listen to a Linkin Park CD, or forcing you to buy anything from Linkin park. They got a band to perform at an event, thats it. If the event is streaming on Apple.com the next day, don't watch the performance.

Ok I'm Excited Now!

Yes this confirms an apple event will take place sometime around Linkin Park's concert at Madison Square Garden.

Here's why I'm excited. I can't imagine Apple would hold an event complete with a musical performance simply to announce the intangible iphone SDK. I bet they're going to announce the 3g GPS iphone 2. They have to announce it six months ahead of shipping to get FCC approval, so announcing it now will get it out by July, like iphone 1.

Also, Garmin recently announced their GPS phone coming out 3rd Quarter 2008. Apple needs to stay competitive, and it would be in their best interest to beat it to the market, and top it (but that part's only natural ;) )

What do you think?

Sounds cool but... Maybe some love for Canada too?....

An appropriate band

Considering that apple appears to be missing an entire CPU generation (Penryn) on the MBP due to distractions such as apple tv, perhaps the choice of band is a fitting celebration of missed opportunities.

I think Linkin Park sucks (I've always associated them with your average 7th grade younger brother's music taste) but they certainly sell quite a few albums and are one of the biggest bands in the world. I don't know how big Nick Cave is in the UK, but I imagine he's much bigger there than he is here.

Just because you or I would prefer to see the Flaming Lips or Wilco doesn't mean that it would make as big a splash or have as big an impact, so I understand their choice. Who knows? Maybe they'll debut new Macbook Pros there as well.

How could someone possibly vote negative for this? This is great news. Apple will be introducing/announcing something...how could that possibly be negative? Are people voting negative for the sake of voting negative? Or are people who "hate" Apple on this board and voting negative? I don't get it.

No, you don't.

Possible reasons maybe:

- Crap band
- people don't believe the rumour
- they aren't interested in iPhone SDK
- they think the voting system is a complete and total waste of time ( and vote negative )

Doesn't mean they are 'Apple haters'.

Can't believe I read through all these comments in hopes of something that was actually related to the event, not whether or not you're cool or not for liking Linkin Park.

I don't really care for Linkin Park myself, but if you do, then you'll enjoy the event all the more so kudos to you.

For those of you that think you're so cool for not liking Linkin Park, how many albums have you sold? How many concert tours have you had? If you're such knowledgeable experts of music, how many albums have you produced, or how many musicians have you trained that became famous???

And for that matter, if you're so cool, how come everyone knows who Linkin Park is, but no clue who you are???

Thanks a Lot! I just spit out coffee all over my mac--))) :D

yeah, maybe its just me. I don't even listen to linkin park. But Randy Newman? who the hell listens to Randy Newman? I guess the older crowd. I am 20, so if someone put a gun to my head and i had to chose, it would have to be linkin park.

Pretty sweet false logic there, fella. I'm not sure why it is that because I'm not famous that I'm not allowed to like a band... but you go right on ahead with your reasoning. Additionally... being "cool" has nothing to do with being well known in a 'worldly' sense, or otherwise.

Okay, so far we've seen these arguments in defense of Linkin Park:

1) How many records have YOU sold?
2) They're better than ****** pop bands.
3) They write their own stuff.
4) If you don't like them you're just trying to be cool.

Seriously people? Is this the best you could come up with? This is why crappy pop-metal, or really any pop-rock crossover bands exist, because of this mentality of defensible mediocrity. Is this all you require of the music that shapes and defines our culture? Selling records? Being better than the lowest rung on the ladder? Writing their own songs?!

And reason number four is just insulting everyone's intelligence.

Edit: People care so much about this because Apple's niche market is represented by the music and art it portrays to the rest of the media. Traditionally, Apple has invited indie and/or well-respected bands, typically ones that those hip folks in their twenties are paying close attention to. Apple plays to trendsetters, because Apple IS a trendsetter. In this case, Apple is playing to the lowest common denominator, and we are all fearful of Apple becoming just that.

Maybe...

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but Linkin Park wrote this song called
"Numb", and Jay-Z did a remix of it. So maybe at this event, Linkin Park and Jay-Z will be there to perform it. The reason I mention Jay-Z is because wasn't there a rumor that Jay-Z was going to launch a record label with Apple? This could be the event where this might happen. What do you guys think?
Here is a Wikipedia link to the song I am referring to.

LOL oban! Thank you, at least someone got my humor! :D

thebeat: YES! Of course it's fake. Apple would never make a "baby poop" brown shuffle nor admit they're clearing out old inventory. Oh, and my contact says new MBPs in New York on this Thursday at 9:05 AM CET... count on it! ;)
