Let's break the failures in your post.

  1. No-one forced you to go out and buy the 4s immediately, so that failure is on you. Personally, I would have waited until a jailbreak for it was released before buying it, leaving time for the early adopters to find any bugs and allow the carriers' servers to recover from all the activations.

In fact, that's exactly what I did, as I currently have a need for tethering, which is why I'm still on my iPhone 3G.

  2. You assume that the Dev Team, i0nic, chr0nic, geohot, or whoever, is obligated to release a jailbreak. They are not.

  3. The jailbreaks out there right now are for the existing hardware exploits in previous iPhones (4, 3GS, 3G, original). the iPhone 4S has new hardware, remember? You're not even giving them time to code for them, let alone discover them in the hardware, if there are any. They only got the phone the same day everyone else did!

Bottom line: FAIL on your part for not wanting to wait. Now you have to live with "dying to customize" your phone until a jailbreak is released for the 4S. In the meantime, go out, play with Siri, and have fun with your new 4S until a jailbreak is released, if at all... unless you still want to rue the fact that you jumped the gun and didn't wait.

Patience/virtue?

You are totally right - most of these guys writing code receive little or no financial benefit from providing the world with jailbreaks and unlocks. They are in now way required or obliged to even provide that - as many of them have moved on to other things since the community continually bit the hand that fed it. Furthermore, how long can we expect these kids (in many cases) to continue giving up their free time to jailbreak something every time something comes out (ad infinitum).

I just bought two iphone 4's because I live in China and can't afford the markups (in the States or here), so Ill be waiting like the rest of us.

Quick theory:
Since a few ideas on why they are 'waiting' have been thrown around, I thought I'd ask and see what you guys thought about this - do you think it's possible that they are waiting to see what kind of software comes w/ the factory unlocked models to see if they can provide a non-workaround unlock solution?

I get so tired of having to jailbreak and unlock my phones because of all the countries I'm working in, but certainly can't afford to drop $700+ on a factory unlocked model.

Cheers,
Brian

Is this thread specifically about the iPhone 4S or iOS5 in general because I would certainly like to see my iOS5 3GS untethered soon. I think i could sell it easier if the buyer didn't have to worry about how to reboot the phone.

why are people saying the devs receive no financial benefit? I donated 10$ to comex when he released jbme 3.0

I amazed how much malarkey can get dreamed up and posted when I only posted 3 short sentences, (and the belittling I received for asking)

When will the dev team release an untethered jailbreak for the 4s?

Anyone hear any rumors yet?
I'm dying to customize my new 4s :D

This is only vaguely related to this topic but, in the interests of not annoying everyone by starting a new thread....

Roughly how stable is the tethered jailbreak of ios5 on the 4? I ask because I just jailbroke mine with redsn0w, purely for Activator and the swipe up gesture from bottom middle for the multitasking bar. Reason being, the home button on my phone was driving me utterly crackers. This is my third iPhone under warranty (now expired) and I see little point me paying to get it fixed as I know it'll come back, grr!

Activator works a charm, my only fear being as it's tethered I'm up **** creek if it crashes while I'm out, usually about 12 hrs a day. Thing is, my phone is practically unusable about 33% of the time due to the b****** home button so it's worth the risk. Seriously, my home button issues are so bad I've seriously contemplated getting a 4S (I've got about 8 months left on contract) purely for a fresh warranty and the ability to take it back for a new one every time it goes! Silly really, as I'm perfectly satisfied with my 4 till the next gen iPhone comes along.

well if it crashes into safe mode which im sure you mean is ok becasue resprings are allowed on a teatherd jailbreak, the only thing that isnt is a power down or the battery dies

Aah right, wasn't aware of that, thanks.

I've actually started enjoying using my phone again with the simple addition of that gesture, I was close to flinging it against the wall, it was so bad sometimes

First one, 404 error.
Second one, 404 error.

In short, I think you're grasping at straws. Like I said before, sit back and wait. the Dev Team will put something out on their own that other sites will just reference on their own. So no use in trying to find something that doesn't exist.

Also, they are not going to tip their hand until 5.0.1 comes out, if it does come out. So once again, sit back and wait.

Sorry, quit smoking. No offense to OP. I hope you see something soon. My jb iOS 5 tethered that it is iPhone4 definitely ROCKS > iPhone4s un jb. ;)

Unless there's some exploit in iOS5 found, and you can use a JBME4.com or whatever, there may very well never be a proper jailbreak like the older devices. (and any old iOS exploit won't do - it has to be serious enough to gain root access).

Just look at the iPad 2. It's been out 7 months(?) and only one JB, via an iOS exploit. The actual A5 setup still hasn't been hacked.

And it's not like the iPad 2 is a niche product with not many hackers looking at it either.

Either way... could honestly be tomorrow, next month, next year - with there being a slight possibility of never.

actually the dev team has made access, and muscle nerd confirmed this on twitter, just looks like they need to make it idiot proof now.

currently the only untethered iOS5 JB is for old-bootrom 3GS. Everything beyond that is work in progress with no ETAs. (via @musclenerd)
