So if I install lion will I still have all my files on my computer like my songs amd movies and everything?

And if I don't have a magic mouse or magic trackpad is it still worth it?

Thanks

Well, you'll still be able to use fullscreen apps, mission control, launchpad, the new (nicer) Mail.app and Address Book, air drop, enjoy the enhanced security (e.g. ASLR, sandboxing), ... Check out the list:

The multitouch gestures are really nice but they are not the only thing that changed.

Just a question.
Is it a must buy getting the Magic Trackpad for desktop Mac computers now that Lion is out?

really digging new os, looks awesome on my new iMac 27 inch, grade upgrade, no need for a dock:D

There wasn't ever a need for the dock. I've been using command + space bar to launch apps for a long time now.

I stoppped reading Siracusa when he compared Objective-C and the advances of ARC/Clang/LLVM less favorably to those of Javascript for modern abstraction, due to the legacy of C.

Like what? Can't even get a nice pair of socks for 29 bucks.
I wonder what socks you are purchasing.

Try it first, then decide if you like it. Otherwise I am not fond of the "it's only $29, I'll just buy anyways mentality". I am much happier keeping my $29 this time and not having to deal with the App Store.

My big question is what do when my MacBook finally dies.

My favourite feature: swiping between spaces (without invoking Mission Control.)

So smooth and quick. So convenient. However, an improvement might be to make it scroll without stopping at every space - "momentum scrolling", I think.

In SL you could do this. You could assign a keyboard shortcut. For example on my machine, I had the option key and an arrow key, and that would move you to that space in that direction. And it was actually a lot faster, since you didn't have the eye candy, and momentum effect.

that picture

is adorable. :)

Glad to hear the positives about Lion.

I can't upgrading anything for a long while because my universities take forever to upgrade their online course systems. That and the serious fact that trackpads are brutal on my wrists and I'm a spaz with them to boot.

I love Siracusa's reviews, but he is dead wrong on his criticisms of reference counting and ARC.
Why? Because, reference counting is simple, elegant, and as he says himself, becomes second nature for Obj-C devs. Without the overhead and inefficiencies of automatic garbage collection.

Is switching the icon size within finder gone? The only way to do it now, I think is through folder options. You used to be able to pinch on the trackpad, and I believe there was a slider if you were using the mouse.

This is without a doubt the most flawless OS upgrade ever, I can tell ya.

So far, EVERYTHING works fine, all migration steps (iTunes, Mail etc.) passed without a hiccup, Safari is faster than ever, and the gestures are really starting to internalize now...particularly cool is the swipe between Web pages...better than a real book..! ;)

No major incompatibilities so far, apart from an old version of CHUD and an unused release of Parallels 6 that wasn't Lion-aware.

All files are fine, all plugins except for iTunes DockArt (pity), all menu items and their programs, all media content, wireless printer recognized from the beginning etc...what a SPECTACULAR job by Apple for a x.0 release!

Performance

I have 2009 MBP model with Core 2 Duo processor & 2GB RAM? I'm worried about performance of Lion with 2GB. Can anyone who has similar configuration and installed LION comment on it??

The slider is on the status bar. You can show/hide it in the View menu or just use cmd-/

Awesome, thanks! This OS is too pro trackpad in my opinion.

Yes, a bit. That's the advertised "Back to the Mac" iOS influence. But I must admit I really like it. I never use a mouse (well, only for games), so any improvements on the trackpad interface are very welcome.

brightness controls on my external keyboard now controls my external monitor instead of my macbook's display now

This seems like a minimal OS upgrade. I wonder what the MAC OS will look like in 3 years.........

A few things I like.....

1. Mission Control is an awesome feature. I probably would have shelled out $20 for this feature alone.

2. Little things like when I drag a picture file from an email to the desktop and I already have a picture file on the desktop and they are both titled "photo," instead of simply asking me if I want to replace the existing file it gives me the option of saving both to the desktop.

3. Mail is greatly improved.

A few things I don't like.....

1. I don't care for the leather-bound look for iCal and Address Book and I use both of those apps throughout the day.

2. Fullscreen Safari is great but without the ability to access my Menu Bar and Bookmarks while in fullscreen mode, it is essentially useless to me.

It won't run Classic apps so it is of no use to me and millions of other people who still have excellent older software. It is a pity Apple is so ecologically irresponsible to throw away so much good hardware, software and data.

Just hover your mouse to the top edge of the screen to have them appear...

Well... if you don't like the leather-bound look there's not much you can do about it for now. I guess someone will find a way do mod it soon. But good news: you can access the menu bar, bookmarks and dock while in fullscreen. Just drag the mouse to the (respective) edge of the screen.

Hasn't Classic been gone for... A long time? Do you mean PPC programs that are 5+ years old? You don't have to upgrade... snow leopard will still be supported with security updates for a while.

Edit: since 10.5 it was discontinued, actually. Stick with a PPC or below Mac for Classic apps.

Lion is a Winner for me, what a nice upgrade.

Things I like so far:

- Full Screen Apps

It´s really useful on my Macbook 13", I´m already using it a lot on Safari.

- Resume, AutoSave, Versions

Those are pretty slick features. Really, after getting used to those I´m asking myself why no one has implemented them in the first place. Great!

- FileVault 2

Can´t say much about performance yet, as I´m just about to encrypt my drive. Finally I´ll be able to use FV together with Time Machine.

- Switching Spaces

Switching between different desktops is a chore finally.

- Safari Reader / Swipe Back/Forth

I do like the reader. Swiping pages back and forth is a breeze too.

Neutral:

- LaunchPad

I don´t know what to make of it yet. Sure, it´s helpful to categorize your apps, but why one earth does Apple apply the same limits as on the iDevice? 9 items per folder? Come one, Apple! There is no reason for this limit on a computer.

Overall a great update, I´m sure I´ll run into more features as I keep using Lion.
