Uninstalling Parallels and removing my Bootcamp partition seems to have halved the boot/shutdown time. Probably faster than it was in SL.

15" 2011 Macbook Pro, i7 2.2GHhz, 4GB RAM

Parallels just released an update that speeds boot/shutdown significantly.

I clean-installed Lion on launch date. I'm not running Parallels or Vmware or anything like that. I deleted caches, ran onyx, repaired permissions etc etc.

Yet my boot times are still slow. Upwards of a minute to boot to login screen.

On a mid2009 MBP.

Finally I did it, close my eyes and click the install icon hehehehehe

Early 2011 15", OCZ agility 240 III, optibay with factory HDD, bootcamp Win7... about 25 min Lion installation (update). Efi update and after 8 hours not even one beach ball, OSX bootup 18 seconds from cero power, windows 7 no issues.. I feel it smoother and a little more responsive.
Had to re-enable TRIM suport, and re-negoziate admin privileges to be able to run AJA system test but till know thats it!!!!!

Lucky guy eh? hehehehehehehe

NO BEACH BALLS!!!!!!

I updated my system to EFI 2.2 and 10.7.2 (11C55) and updated parallels to the newest version 7.0.14922.

Still the odd small beachball when trying to access network volumes, but so far (1 day testing) no 30 second beachballs..

Fingers crossed..

Never had slow startup problems though - occasionally took 45s, but from power on normally 23s

Vertex III 240GB, fw 2.11 is my boot disk.

I did a clean install at Lion's release. From startup chime to login screen, my black Macbook (2 GB RAM) takes about 42 seconds, which seems longer than SL bootup. SL is slower than Lion in getting from login screen to desktop though.

The day after!!! Still not beach balls and everything working fast and smooth.

The funny thing here is that I just switch from windows about one month ago, that was really scary, but could not handle my daughter pressure :D so I made the move!!!

Know I can not understand how I could be so blind for so long. Because of my PANIC, I decided to buy Win7 at the same time I was buying my "this" first Mac, and did it with parallels, but my Microsoft Flight Simulator was not behaving well, so I google for a while and discovered the bootcamp option. The result was so blasting good that I though "if this is that good I want the best" then I took my Mac when to the store and requested a change for the 1Gig Viedo Ram ;) (this is Spain) they told me, no changes after your Mac has been registered with apple  . But any way, I upgraded RAM, Installed SSD right after and beach balls came out, not too much and not for too long but there at certain periods of time.
So, after lion update NO BEACH BALLS!!!!! hehehehehehehe :D

Reason number 5001 why launchpad needs to be erased from history

lol - i personally hate launchpad and never have/will use it.... i hardly even use the app folder - i prefer to search for my apps in spotlight - but that's me.

Back -to - topic:

EFI 2.2 update has really improved my boot speeds!

I have CTO 2011 MBP 17" with vertex-3 max IOPS edition.

Lion was the first OS, apart from win7, that allowed my to use the sata-3 without issue.. 10.6.8 was painfully slow to install - and was beach-ball city - pretty much unusable.

However, lion did solve the beach balls and it actually worked well with my v3 sad, however i had 30-40s boot-up times. I tried several clean installs, a couple of which where i did not migrate my apps + logins and still very slow boot times. Oddly, my OWC 120GB sataII / 3gbs - used to load in 13s (on 10.6.6/7) and was very zippy. The vertex 3 was marginally faster in loading apps and copying files, but one could hardly discern the difference of .01-1s -However, the triple longer loading-up time on the vertex 3 was very noticeable!
The owc + lion was again ok, 20s loading time but still not as fast as SL (pre 10.6.8)

Since the release of EFI 2.2 - i did not bother with a clean in tall.. and noticed the boot times was much improved... i can actually put my MBP to sleep now with fear of waiting ages for lion to load, and the odd start-up crash i see to experience. Although, pre-2.2, beach balls were not an issue for me, after extensive testing - i am yet to experience a beach-ball!

Thank-you apple for EFI 2.2.. my V3 is still screamingly fast, and i have sensible boot-up times again

I recently got a new MBP 13" 2011 base, and upgraded to Lion over SL forgot to see how fast boot was before. Seemed to be a little slower, did the tips people have suggested and that reduced in some. It was nagging at me that maybe it could be quicker, so as I had some free time yesterday and did a clean install from a disc i'd made before SL->lion. After getting it as it was before I can report that there was no better startup speed (33-35 secs).

I would only consider doing a clean install if you had an older machine otherwise I don't think it will make such difference.

Echoing the launchpad bit that added a couple seconds as I tested it before and after my putting all my apps on (added about 20 and it increased start time by about 3 seconds I think). Which is a bit of a shame as I never use it, i like the spotlight way to, but I think it will be a good addition for people newer to the OSX, or sometimes if you want to open an app but can't remember its name, probably just me that happens to though.

update: after - verify disk permissions, + macKeeper fast clean-up (binaries, cache, language etc) i am getting consistant boot-up times under 15s and

Disktester speed test app reports Read/Write speeds of 505/485 mb/s, respectively!

Previously i was getting 471/435 (read/write)

i tried mackeeper based on this and my boot up time remains exactly the same...bad.

I've speeded the system up by removing old third party kext files stored /System/Extensions.

Another problem I found in the console was Apple's MPEG2 codec was PowerPC. I contacted Apple, and they have not released an Intel version. Also explains why I keep getting crashes when trying to import MPEG2 videos in to Logic in Lion, the extension is PPC and used Rosette in older versions, Rosette was depreciated in Lion.

Xbench, AJA System Test and Bonnie are measuring boot drive read and write throughput at 31MB/s, not the 70-80MB/s it is capable of. However, zeroing out the drive using Disk Utility writes at 75MB/s+. Either the benchmarks are not writing at full speed, or it is a Lion bug.

Lion slow to boot

I have two MBPs, one new with preinstalled lion OSX and the other a late 2009 model upgraded to lion OSX.

After changing the hard drives for a larger drives on both MBP, i found that it takes a minute to load from pushing the power button; but no issues on shutting down (3-6 seconds).

The fix (for for me), I had to reinstall lion OSX (by pressing the command+R when starting the system and letting go when the apple sign appears) and this solved the issue on the new MBP and the old MBP.

Make sure you have a strong broadband connection as it may take 2-4 hours for the process to complete.

Hope this helps.

Early 2011 MBP:

Stock 5400RPM hard drive
External USB hard drive with 5 partitions
WiFi

From the moment the Apple logo appears to the appearance of the sign-in screen: 55 seconds...Pathetic.

Almost 5 minutes!!

My iMac does this. Start----->to log in screen, about 30 seconds. Log in box appears. I type, but no "dots"show in the log in box. Now I really wait-about 4 minutes. then out of nowhere, my "dots" appear and everything works great. I've tried Onyx to repair permissions, clean caches, etc with no luck. I've 12 G of ram in this thing. 2.5G intel core i5

Start Console and look at the System Log. Look at what it says during the 4 minutes. That will usually hint to where the problem is (and it is usually network related).

where is the system log at?

where is the system log at?

It's what you see when you run the Console application. You need to pay close attention to the time. If mystified by what you see, paste the lines from the time period you were booting into a message here for analysis.

console

I don't have Console. Where do you buy it? I looked thru applications and there's no such program as console so I assume it's a program i have to buy.

As far as CPU usage goes, I notice that report crash takes up takes up 12% on 7 threads if that helps.

Two problems I see. The one taking the most time is the repeated failures of a Trend Micro product to launch. This must be an antivirus program. You don't need antivirus programs on a Mac. Uninstall it. Usually antivirus programs are difficult to install so you may have to check their website for instructions. The second problem is that it appears to be trying to mount a firewire drive that isn't present. It may be part of you Login Items (see System Preferences -> Users & Groups). Also check System Preferences->Startup Disk and make sure your system drive is selected.
