If you paste the three pages I just sent, this is my log today after I removed Trend micro. You're right-it is an anti virus program. I'm using sophos at the moment. Should I remove it as well? I have several USB and firewire hard drives hooked to my iMac. They have a lot of games, video, applications thatI have used in the past. Should I try to start up with all the extra HDs removed??Thanks for your help.

I see Sophos as well. You don't need *any* antivirus. I'm stuck with having to use one on a Windows system at work and the programs I run are 5 times faster on my MacBook Pro than on the 6 month old HP Workstation (with a quad core Xeon processor) at work.

It seems to be having a hard time finding the boot disk. Make sure that your boot disk is selected in System Preferences.

I also expect your slow boot times are caused by the extreme complexity of your configuration. I could run down through the list of problems in that log file, but the best solution might be to just leave your system on and make use of Sleep. There is no reason to turn the computer completely off. A system that is sleeping uses less power than a night light and starts up virtually instantly.

Absolutely. Sophos should be avoided, as it could actually increase your Mac's vulnerability, as described here and here. You don't need any 3rd party antivirus app to keep your Mac malware-free. Macs are not immune to malware, but no true viruses exist in the wild that can run on Mac OS X, and there never have been any since it was released over 10 years ago. You cannot infect your Mac simply by visiting a website, unzipping a file, opening an email attachment or joining a network. The only malware in the wild that can affect Mac OS X is a handful of trojans, which cannot infect your Mac unless you actively install them, and they can be easily avoided with some basic education, common sense and care in what software you install. Also, Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Lion have anti-malware protection built in, further reducing the need for 3rd party antivirus apps.

  1. Make sure your built-in Mac firewall is enabled in System Preferences > Security > Firewall
  2. Uncheck "Enable Java" in Safari > Preferences > Security. (Leave JavaScript enabled)
  3. Uncheck "Open "safe" files after downloading" in Safari > Preferences > General
  4. Be careful to only install software from trusted, reputable sites. Never install pirated software. If you're not sure about an app, ask in this forum before installing.
  5. Never let someone else have physical access to install anything on your Mac.
  6. Always keep your Mac and application software updated. Use Software Update for your Mac software. For other software, it's safer to get updates from the developer's site or from the menu item "Check for updates", rather than installing from any notification window that pops up while you're surfing the web.
That's all you need to do to keep your Mac completely free of any virus, trojan, spyware, keylogger, or other malware. You don't need any 3rd party software to keep your Mac secure.

slow to boot

I'll remove sophos and I did the other tips you suggested. There is only one hard drive in the space where it asks for startup disc. I have several, but they're not shown.

Even though there is only one, make sure you click on it to select it.

Blah blah waffle waffle.....the crux is, Lion is simply the worst osx ever! I'm so pissed after buying a brand new i7 with lion on board that I would seriously think about just going back to windows, even vista! Whoever okayed this osx obviously has learning disabilities.

No joke, my older macbook pro that's suffering from water/beer damage stilll boots and shuts down faster than my new one. I actually hate my laptop tight now.

Rather than blame the OS, which is obviously not the problem since not everyone is having such issues, why not do some troubleshooting to discover the true source of your problems?

This helped mine alot, it took 1 min to load to the log in screen and 130 till it was moving. While not near what snow leopard was its a big improvement

It sounds as though you all have a better start up than i do. Since 'upgrading' to Lion my start up times have gone from 30 seconds to nearer 30 minutes!!!. Even the Apple gurus at the local genius bar were stumped for a solution and I now have to reinstall OSX. It's bye bye Lion, welcome home SnowLeopard for me. To complement the dreadful performance Lion added useless Nasa control centres and an irritating default of open all the screens left open last time. Heap of crap. Has Apple brpught in a load of Micrpsoft Bloatware developers for this release?

Early 2011 MBP 13 inch, 8GB.

In place upgraded to Lion, really unhappy with restart / boot time until I upgraded to 10.7.3, seems much improved.

I am sorry GG, with all due respect, but the os is the issue with lion. :) The tips you posted are invaluable for most novice users but most of us are been there done that a long time ago, and the os is still an issue. The user who's posting their logs might be having problems with av software he doesn't need to run, but that doesn't clear lion from the multitude of issues it's created for users.

The fact that you 've come to suggest all browsers have to kill flash (good advice I 've done it too) for os x to function problem free in 2012 going to 2013 is very telling. 3 years ago say this wasn't such an issue. It was the idevices that couldn't use flash, not os x. If Steve felt compelled to go to war with adobe, that doesn't mean the average joe should know what flash is and how to kill it after buying a mac at a 50% margin for apple and from 1.5 to twice the price of a comparable windoze computer. Desktop computers are meant to able to run flash (I dislike it too, but that's how it is) and do it so as efficiently as they can, and end users are not meant to know how to disable it. All the more so since flash isn't going away anytime soon and apple are doing much of their own development to promote html5 as they should, god knows with all the money they got stashed they could be working on it a bit more...

Obviously not, as not all Lion users are reporting the same issues. If the OS were the problem, all users would be having the same symptoms. I'm not suggesting that Lion is flawless, but it clearly isn't the source of all problems that users may be having. Rather than simply give up and blame the OS, it's only prudent to pursue other troubleshooting to eliminate other possibilities.

Based on the number of posters who indicate they haven't heard of many of those tips, it's not accurate to say "most of us" have been doing those. There's no way to know the knowledge/experience level of all forum readers, so the tips are a valid recommendation.

It is prudent and I agree lion isn't the source of all problems users report, and your guidelines provide a vary good preliminary tutorial on how to address most issues. Having said that you did miss my point about flash.

If SJ wanted to go to war with adobe that doesn't mean the end user should know how or be supposed to disable flash on a desktop os in 2012. Apple's relationship with adobe is hurting the end user. After the way apple have related to them it's evident that adobe are not that hot about optimizing their products for os x; apple hasn't taken it up to themselves to approach them, nor dedicated a team of their own to work with them for better flash in os x and hence the user who pays for apple products a considerable premium (warranted or not) is offloaded the problem.

That's why we ve come to the point where not only ios devices cannot run flash, but os x too cannot run flash well. And this, at apple's current stage of evolution, what with it being an obscenely wealthy company eating out all the competition and striking 94% increases in profit this quarter is nothing short of completely inexcusable. A $300 portable cannot be close to two times more efficient in running flash seamlessly than a $2000 macbook.

Your advice is prudent to disable it, but that's not how it's supposed to be. As disabling it will cause a plethora of websites to stop functioning and the non computer savvy user (the majority that is) will have hard time re-enabling it or even knowing what the problem is that a website or some elements of it do not appear as they should or not at all.

And this is just one of lion's many issues, and lion not only isn't non flawless, it's buggy and problematic, it's problematic in memory management, it's buggy in core software such preview and safari, etc. etc. (I 've written threads and threads about it here) and it makes users quick to accuse it instead of trying to see if they are doing something wrong.

I agree, this isn't helpful and this isn't good computer practice. Unfortunately os x lion, that some of us in the mac community like to refer to as apple's vista, has given the end user plenty of reasons to blame the os first instead of trying to figure out if they are doing anything wrong, because it hasn't been a good release to been with, it's been a sloppy, bug ridden, rushed and poorly developed release, with insufficient development for the os innards, non existent core technological advances (resolution independence, zfs) and lots of badly (or at the very least questionably) implemented additions (autosaves, save states, auto quit, versions). Is the average user to blame for being quick to judge it when they have a problem? I wouldn't think so, even though it's bad IT practice.

Based on the number of posters who indicate they haven't heard of many of those tips, it's not accurate to say "most of us" have been doing those. There's no way to know the knowledge/experience level of all forum readers, so the tips are a valid recommendation.
Fair point. I meant to say most of us more experienced mac users. To the rest they are invaluable, and I said so, even to some experienced users that can be of great help.

Having said that you did miss my point about flash.
I didn't miss it. It's well known that Flash is problematic on many platforms and many versions of Mac OS X, not just Lion. Adobe has a long history of selling bloatware. I wasn't impressed with Adobe products on Windows, and I'm not impressed with them on Mac OS X.
Your advice is prudent to disable it
My advice isn't to disable it, but to control it with tools like ClickToFlash.
....(I 've written threads and threads about it here) ....
And have those threads fixed it yet? My point is that ranting about Apple or Lion or Adobe in this forum won't accomplish anything at all, except possibly making the ranters feel better. Until Apple or Adobe or web developers make improvements, the best we can do is work around problems, using tools like ClickToFlash or YouTube's HTML5 trial. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Adobe won't optimize it's code for OS X because apple have made enemies of them, as much as flash isn't impressive (agreed) on windows, it's way worse on OS X, and it's getting worse in lion, because lion isn't as streamlined and robust as sl and flash takes its toll.

I think the points I 've made here (thanks btw for calling them rants, nice of you...:( ), and the points that the mac community has made in general have slowly being driven home to apple as evidenced by the changes in ml. I am not of the opinion that apple don't live in the web as much as we do and don't realise the users' reactions via forums, blogs etc. I think that whole leave feedback to apple thing - they don't read forums is completely innacurate.

Sure feedback is the best way for them to keep problems under wraps, but when the proverbial hits the fan the best thing is for the user community to react publicly and vocally. From my experience so far, even if it's the last thing they would admit (what with their egos at this stage being inflated to the point of bursting), yes indeed user reactions have pushed them in the right direction. If it hadn't been for them, and if we were let with the adulation and arch kissing of Gruber types nothing would have been fixed in ml. Of course ml leaves a lot to be desired still because apparently apple aren't allocating enough resources to it.

I have to point out that I don't disagree with your clicktoflash suggestions and youtube's html5, they make sense (I use them too), and you are right in informing users about them, I am extremely displeased with apple that average users have to resort to them while a dime a dozen netbook doesn't face the problems os x faces with flash. I can't expect many of my friends or family to be able to use them and figure out when it's blocking their flash or not, and I expect that it's going to cause many problems with their use, the fact that I am a geek doesn't mean others can or should be geeks. Flash has to work and work as well as it does in windows at this moment, I don't care how apple will plan on doing this, it's way overdue. I too wish flash would die soon, but until it does it's very dishonest for apple to keep pushing for its demise via creating problems for the users.

I think the points I 've made here (thanks btw for calling them rants, nice of you...:( )
Calling them rants isn't intended to be derogatory. Call them soliloquies, monologues, diatribes, censures, castigations, .... whatever you want. The point is that I don't believe such criticisms on a forum are likely to even be noticed, let alone make any difference to the development teams at Adobe or Apple. If you believe it will, then by all means, knock yourself out, and good luck in your efforts.

I'm aware that some come to this forum to debate, to rant, to use this forum as a soap box or a Mac-oriented Facebook, or many other reasons, which is certainly their right. My intent, however, is to help people solve technical problems and learn how to improve their Mac user experience. To that end, I find assigning blame to Apple or Adobe or any other company to be pointless and unproductive. I'd much rather find a way to resolve or work around issues, if possible, until they can (hopefully) be permanently resolved by improvements in development.

Your point of view is well taken and certainly your work here is much more productive in helping users than my... diatribes (i ll go with that :) ), and you don't need me to tell you it's very appreciated also. I do think though that when apple (and every company) see a general reaction and criticism (which is by no means restricted to here but it's evidenced in other forums, blogs, and of course in people's real world discussions) esp. in forums by their user base they do take note and if they can afford it or if it's not taking them too much out of their way (=money) they do make changes. I think this is evidenced in the ui changes in ml. But we'll agree to disagree on the effect this has I guess.:)

Late 2008 MBP here:

Reboot times, from Desktop to Desktop:
Snow Leopard: Less than a minute
Lion: More than 7 minutes

Sometimes Lion even takes 10 or more minutes to open all my apps in ADDITION to the 7 minute boot time. During that time the system is almost completely unresponsive, and the hard drive is constantly whirring.

Piece of ****!

A few suggestions, reinstall of course, diskwarrior via external image (from cc clone or superduper) the drive, and I am afraid to say if you can afford it you might want to go with an ssd, apple doesn't do hard disk drives anymore, they page out to them very often in lion (assuming of course everyone has an ssd by now) which isn't something hard drive can handle well.

Instead of fixing their core os memory management problems they offload the problem to the hardware as a. an extra incentive for users to buy more overpriced macs, and b. as a way to avoid doing their software work. They are in the mobile business now after all (when they can get an antennae to work right) and they are branching out to tvs, why the hell should they care for a low end computer they released a year or two ago (let alone four years ago) if the buyer wasn't decent enough to pay the ssd apple tax (on top of the apple tax) to go with the ssd model?

Tim Cook likes to talk at Goldman Sachs sponsored events, it's good to share with kindred spirits, because who understands greed better than Goldman? (ot and sorry for the rant end to the post, but it's warranted with the **** apple is pulling on us the users these days.)

No security in obscurity

There is a viewpoint being advanced above that there are no real security threats to Apple except some Trojan type threats. This idea that no real threats have occurred yet to Macs or that they so rare is pretty much a version of security through obscurity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_through_obscurity.

Trying to be secure based on the lack of past or present threats is not being secure. Now it may be true that the use of anti-virus programs may lead to more problems than they solve. But to question trying to take further steps to secure or troubleshoot the security of a Mac based on the idea that there are no real threats is really harmful to the Apple community.

Thanks for joining just to resurrect this thread, but I don't see anyone questioning the idea of taking steps to secure a Mac, or anyone claiming there aren't real threats. As for security through obscurity, the market share myth has been debunked countless times, as there was far more malware in the wild for Mac OS 9 and earlier, when Macs had a much smaller market share and installed base. Now, with roughly 50 million Mac OS X users, the number of viruses has decreased to zero and there are only a handful of trojans remaining. The market share (or security through obscurity) myth is hogwash.

The fact is, all Mac OS X malware that has ever existed in the wild since its release can be successfully avoided by practicing safe computing, as described in the link I posted, without the use of any antivirus software. When you add the additional layer of security in the form of the anti-malware built into Mac OS X 10.6 and later, there is no additional benefit to be gained by running any 3rd party antivirus app. If a new form of threat is introduced at some point in the future, no existing AV app will provide protection against it, since they don't know what to look for.

HELP! 9 Minutes to boot.

Okay, so now when i restart or turn my computer back on it literally takes 5 to 10 minutes to boot up. It just sits on the gray apple screen. I don't know why. I'm not certain but i think when i randomly click the track pad and press keys it makes it go faster? I don't know.. anybody else having this problem? Anybody have any idea what i should do?

I have a standard new macbook pro, running lion. bought it refurbished from apple about 6 months ago. I have full apple care, just don't want to go through all the trouble bringing it in if there is something that i can do myself.

THANKS!
