While I liked the flat minimalist design of Sequoia, Liquid could develop into something good. The initial videos and mockups look stunning and the thought process behind the design is amazing. Turning the device into a slab of glass and then implementing an user interface that turns this glad into a part of the experience, with refracting, movement, a whole new but natural morphology of shapes and animations… that is just neat. Especially as glass/water can be transparent, translucent, opaque, colored and soon… a world of possibilities and semantic interface architecture. Some of these first concepts look amazing.
It feels as if during the beta, faced with criticism, Apple pedaled back and doing that has never made a bold design gesture stronger, as people always, invariably have problems with the “new”. The more sandblasted look, shadows to make typography readable, other compromises do not really help. Another problem is that the glass idea has been taken too far with the icons also becoming colorful stacks of glassy shapes. Icons are a different part of the UI and do not need to be a twist on the same idea,it’s a bit too much and does not add to the fluidity of the main interface. Actually this step results in the feeling of having glass on glass on glass, which is just a bit too much.
But if you look at some of the interface options that still keep some of the earlier ideas, these are beautiful, like the way light is prismatically refracted under the text picker’s loupe or the smooth liquidity of the submenus in the camera app.
I hope Apple cleans this up, makes it a bit simpler and cleaner while going forward with the idea of a living, reactive and responsive interface that seems to have spirit and intelligence. The way the iPhone UI reacted to buttons pressed is the way to go towards a smartly animated operating system that can, integrate AI as the “spirit” animating the liquid.
