What's your situation in relation to a MacBook Pro?

Ditto on the RAM. I wish we knew if Apple will use a chipset with the same Memory Controller (@667MHz) or will use a new higher frequency Memory Controller (@800MHz). Newegg is running a sale on dual-channel Mushkin RAM (2 x 2GB) for approximately $70 until Feb. 2. I plan to max out the RAM on a new MBP when they are released and this is such a great price that it just hurts to let it go.

I'd hold out on buying the RAM now, even for $70... It's quite likely they'll bump up to 800MHZ. OWC have some reliable dual-channel 667MHz RAM (2 x 2GB) starting at $99 all the time plus they offer cashback when you send in your spare RAM. :)

Waiting for the 15" to get a hi-res screen, multitouch, higher BTO HDD option (just heard about the 500GB Samsung.. damn!) and for various Leopard and program compatibility issues to be resolved. If these are all met I will either purchase midyear after the Montevina upgrade, or after Nehalem if the specs leak and are sufficiently impressive (if the quad-core desktop I've enjoyed at work for the last few months hadn't spoiled me, I wouldn't even consider waiting past '08..)

i know this is going to sound lame... but I heard that MBP's will be seen this tuesday or next.

****, so good. Specs? What more have you heard? Write a news, or something like that, please.

ARN - you are my HERO!

Let me be the first to say, I told you so :) And here is what I told you:

No MBP update at MWSF (they will want to focus attention on MBAir).
$1800 base price on MBAir (OK, I was off by $1 -- big deal! :D).
Apple needs to generate some buzz soon to stop the stock from free-falling.

Yes, I believe arn has it right.

Arn may just be right. The new Sony FZ490 with a Penryn chip is scheduled to ship on or about Feb 12 2008, according to their website. Perhaps Apple will have their supply of Penryn chips and ready for a Feb 5/12 launch. Odd that Sony states their Fz will ship on Feb 12 - a Tuesday -> Hummmm :p . Honestly no one knows ....

Count me in!

I'm currently using a 2005 iBook G4 (14''), and I just can't take it's now 20 minute battery life anymore!

I'll probably be going for the base model, possibly with a larger hard drive.

Regards,
JDR

Screw Penryn. My local electronics store (Media Markt) is selling notebooks tax-free this Tuesday (29th). This means I can get a brand new MacBook Pro for over 300€ less at 1595€. This is a discount I won't get anywhere else for a long, long time, especially for a brand new machine.

So, I'm skipping Penryn and grab myself an MBP this Tuesday. In all honesty, I don't think I'll be missing out on much either.

Hoi, does Media Markt sell Apple products as well? That is news for me... the one in Maas doesn't. I wonder where I can travel in the NL to get one?

You could try Eindhoven. Last time I was there, they sold Apple computers.

I hate buying Apple computers from them, though. MM's 14-day return policy means you may very well get a used product for the same, new price. Open the box before you pay to be sure you get a brand new machine. I won't accept anything else.

An updated MBP will be announced within the next three weeks for sure. The base model will probably look like this:

2.5Ghz Penryn
2GB RAM
160GB 5400RPM HDD
8600M GT 256MB
$1999

You'd be crazy to buy now. And there is an approximately 0% chance that the MBP will remain static until Summer.

The only problem with your specs is what Apple would do with the graphics card in the mid-range model. I am not aware of any mobile graphics cards that exceed 256MB.

I am thinking that the next release of the MBP will use the first gen Penryn chips. Why? Because: A. This MBP has likely been in the works for some time, so was probably developed under the (then state of the art and unreleased) penryn gen 1 chips. And B. Apple can squeeze in more revisions (and hence attract more buyers) by first issuing a MBP with the gen 1 platform, and later in the fall/winter release a new MBP with Montevina.

If Apple waited until June to release a new MBP, they would be behind others (Sony,IBM, etc) by 5-6 months. When you are a top computer manufacturer, you have to keep up with the technology. I don't expect that apple would skip over processors that are perfectly suitable for their products because 'something better is coming out'. (Sound familiar?) ;)

My original musings in asking the questions were intended to consider whether Apple has something new in line for the MBP and if they might receive products (e.g. Montevina and revised Penryn) early (e.g. March or April) from Intel to push this new line. Perhaps this is just a dream, but I am curious why Apple did not just release a silent update alongside the MBA. A simple upgrade to Penryn does not justify the delay unless Intel just isn't shipping enough processors. Perhaps the explanation is that simple.

[Edit: Well, if Arn is correct, then it does appear Apple was just waiting for its supply of chips. Now I just have to wait until either Dell releases the 2408 and/or Apple releases a new 23"/24" display. It would be nice to purchase both from Apple and purchase one Apple Care to cover both, so I hope Apple doesn't wait too much longer for the displays, but that is a separate topic.]

Thanks m8! I will surely check it out on Tuesday... had a similar experience with MM- Germany, though they were quite up and front about it. Oh well, will report on Tuesday. Cheers.

I should know better, but yeah.. playing the waiting game.

(my prediction would be end of March, by the way)

Engadget just had a post that says HP is now offering Penryn processors in their Pavilion laptops.

In my opinion, whenever apple tries to release something new (ipod, iphone, MBA, Leapard, etc) it slacks off on everything else it is doing in order to get the product out the door on time or in time for a big event. I think that the reason their is no MBP out now is because of a combination of not having access to enough processors AND they were busy trying to get the MBA and push it to consumers. Now that all of the reviews have showed all the MBA's shortcomings, its a good time to release the MBP and grab the customers who were waiting around for the MBA to be something better than what it is.

I think that the MBP will employ very few updates, Definitely the new processors and the multi touch. The case should stay mostly the same with any other changes being the keyboard to match the MB and MBA. Other minor bumps like HDD space is likely to go along with it. I don't think that they will move the pro's ram base model up from 2gb. No blu ray, No SSD. Maybe change the LCD to slightly newer "toxin free" displays.
