I found about 30 cities just in Europe having these building outlines, here a few of them: Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich, Dresden, Leipzig, Bremen, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Essen (GER), London, Liverpool (GB), Kiew (UKR), Brussel (BEL), Rome, Venice (ITA), Barcelona (SPA), Amsterdamm (NED), Paris (FRA) ...

and finally: New York, Washington, D.C. (US)

Also tested Istanbul for Turkey, Moscow for Russia and Tokyo for Japan, but did not find any building footprints.

All of the 50 largest cities in the US have these building outlines in standard mode.

I'm also pretty excited that most major uk cities have the building footprints.

Liverpool, Manchester' Birmingham (mentioned before) but also:

Leeds, Southampton, Sheffield, Leicester, Coventry, Bristol, Newcastle, Cardiff, Bradford, York.

If this means 3d satellite will follow in subsequent betas I for one am impressed, the fears that flyover would be US centric are subsiding and if all these cities and more will have flyover it genuinely would become a google killing app.

So Apple adds 3D views to 1% of the world and you think that is going to kill Google's Streetview which covers millions upon millions more blocks in far more detail?

Ok so maybe not 'kill' google in a literal sense but certainly sway casual customers looking for something with 'wow' factor in a product.

I can't say I've missed having streetview.

...And I can't say I'm really needing to see 3D models of cities that I don't live in other than to say "wow, that looks really cool" a couple of times.

Surely you were trying to make a point?

I think the idea or the plan is that eventually all the cities around the world will get a 3D view. I like google maps but personally i prefer 3D view over street view. To me it gives better view of unknown places!

Just came in to report how much FASTER and more info rich the beta 4 maps are.

Zooming around Toronto, Chicago, the points of interest are so dense there it's really a cool experience. Virtual tourism.

They load faster, higher res, and stay loaded while your move around. Very cool.

3D has been removed for parts of Los Angeles, for example the Hollywood Sign and the area around it.

Man, these maps are looking sexier day after day. I always had faith in Apple to make things simple and more natural to use. A much richer and elegant experience than the old google maps. Hurray to a company that knows how to refine the user experience. It's attention to such minor details like this that make me respect Apple. This sets them apart from the rest by far.

Dublin also has the building outlines for the city centre.

Strangely, they disappear if I view the map in landscape orientation; has anyone else seen this?

Edit: Cork does as well, so that's two Irish cities.

Wonder if they'll put the world's tallest tower (Khalifa Tower) in 3D. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1344450990.548941.jpg

has anyone checked other famous non-city locations for 3D? I'm referring to things like mount rushmore, mount everest (or any mountains), the pyramads, grand caynon, stonehenge, Chichen Itza, etc... That would be pretty cool to see.

I agree! I had that same thought, how cool to have national parks, mountains, and monuments in 3D.

I'm really impressed with beta 4, and I think it's going to be a killer app for them.

To beat google at their own game right out of the gate is a pretty bold accomplishment.

That's a pretty bold statement itself! Are you referring the the whole maps app (compared to androids maps app of course. It'd be unfair to compare it to the Apple control app) or to just the 3D imaging?

Don't forget google has technically beat apple out of the gate with releasing 3D imaging to google earth a few weeks ago. I'm not sure how it'll compare to flyover, but we'll have to wait till iOS 6 release to see,
