Just checking the extent of the building footprints in London and they just cut off at a sharp edge, so there's probably more extended data to be added. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1344782625.940958.jpg

Add downtown Atlanta to the list! it doesn't cover as much as some other cities but it has the Georgia dome area over to the Capitol building then over to Turner field! Very cool to see all the places I have actually been to in flyover! Can't wait to see more and more added!

A little shocked New York isn't in there yet.

I actually have a question regarding NYC, even though it's also valid for any other city.

With a city like New York, which is constantly growing and that has quite a few skyscrapers/supertalls under construction (i.e. One WTC and One57), do you think Apple will update the 3D data of those particular areas more often? Specially with the One WTC, which is a symbol to the US, I doubt Apple will still show it U/C once it's topped out or completed.

Maybe that's why NY is still not available, because they want it as up-to-date as possible.

Personally I think they're just throwing darts at a world map and adding the nearest city at the moment. ;)

"Your turn, Brian."
"Ok... oh I was aimed for London."
"Madrid, it is then."

The major cities will be benchmarked by people and reviewers. They started on the small cities to see if they can get them right. When they have, then they'll do the big complicated ones that get outdated quick (NYC, London, etc)

Can anyone see if UC Berkeley has flyover maps yet? The Nokia version does. Post a screenshot if you can... I'd love to see now the Campanile (clock tower) and Doe Library look.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure that data comes from the Ordinance Survey, which covers the entire UK. Seems like Apple have arbitrarily cut it to an area around central London.

RecceApp.jpg

This app, called "Recce", is what Apple Maps should have looked like. Pretty Amazing model of London. It only supports one city so is admittedly really just a tech demo at this stage, but it's much smoother, clearer, and more fun to navigate around compared to Apple's 3D cities and even features cars and trains moving around!

Check it out here: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/recce-london/id539951375?mt=8

Not sure where the clock tower is but this screenshot should answer your question.

Thanks for posting. Shame the 3D stuff hasn't been added yet. Here's how the Nokia version looks.

By the way, I noticed a helicopter doing a bunch of low-level flights over the campus yesterday over a period of 3 or 4 hours. I wonder if that could have been for Apple's 3D mapping? More likely just filming for campus promotional videos and such.

I wouldn't say Apples maps should have been like this - I agree it's fun, and when you're zoomed out its very impressive. When your zoomed in it looks like your playing sim city, famous places aside, it's mostly generic buildings (I see miles of flat roofs modelled that are actually pitched).

The only reason it's smoother is the model's stored locally, Apple should add the option to cache more map tiles to make theirs smoother.

Well after using Apple Maps since beta 1 I have really grown to like it. At first I thought that street view would be a big loss and that flyover was a gimmick but my opinion has completely changed.

I have spent hours looking at Sydney alone and have come to realise that viewing incredibly high quality 3D models is far better than street view where you can only look down a pre defined path. Plus the photos in street view aren't always the best quality. Flyover lets you become a virtual tourist!

With that in mind I have published a journal. The intent is that it will eventually have a page per city, each with screenshots of impressive scenery I have come across. I have started with Sydney as I think it has some of the most impressive 3D scenery I have seen (so far). Individual rocks and stones have been modelled along the coastlines and I have even seen waves hitting the rocks rendered in 3D, crazy!:

Love the cliff detail.

That's the thing. When you are zoomed out you pass so much detail without knowing its even there. It's only when you zoom in and check out small areas a little bit at a time, that you discover such incredible detail in the smallest of things.

Here's hoping that Apple get 3D data in as many places as possible.
