the shuffle will live because it's a cheap holiday gift. the nano is sexier but too small and the touch is a huge seller for apple. 64GB of flash storage is a winner too plus the adds of a camera and 99% of what the iphone can do minus the phone.

That was a list created by affluent consumers who insist on look/feel and ease-of-use more than feature/functionality.

For that matter, that last sentence pretty much describes MOST of Apple's core audience.

I think it is more wanna-be affluent than anything. The affluent are smarter, which is why they are affluent in the first place, and pay to get the real deal and know what it is. You aren't going to see an Apple TV in a real home theater set up of the affluent. Not something you can buy at Best Buy.

It will most likely get a 'silent' update some time, or at least a price drop as the components get cheaper/demand moves to the touch... I guess.

Apple most likely plans to introduce a high-capacity flash-based iPod at some point, then kill the Classic. Lowering prices now on the Classic will just make it harder to get reasonable margins on the flash model later.

I'm curious why noone has mentioned it yet (changing Airtunes to Airplay).

I wonder if it's a foreshadowing of another name change - iTunes to iPlay?

It would make sense since so much of what iTunes does is more than simply music. It's become a true media portal (music, movies, tv shows, ibooks, audiobooks, podcasts).

No, Gigabit would provide no benefit

Wow only 100BASE T Ethernet,
Wouldn't it be better to have Gigabit ethernet for good streaming?

Gigabit would provide absolutely no benefit over 100Baset T. Keep in mind that the content being streamed is already compressed, even 100Baset T is probably at least five times faster than what is required for streaming H264 compressed 720P content, or even 1080P for that matter. Going any faster with the ethernet speed would be completely pointless.

Noob question here but, AirPlay/Tunes is not wireless syncing right? It's just giving people the ability to play their music anywhere in their house?

I'm a little confused about it, I've never used AirTunes lol.

I'm sure they would have changed iTune's name, you know, when they released it if they were changing the name.

Not to mention that there is no shot in hell that name isn't already owned by someone....

Was anyone else a little shocked...

by a few things?

1. Woz in the audience. (though he has attended keynotes before).
2. Steve Jobs put on a few pounds. He looks magnitudes healthier.
3. Nano loses the cam and the ability to play video.
5. No update to the ipod classic.
6. No bump in gig storage or price drop on ipod touch. (but the retina display is a nice consolation).
7. I am sick of the products getting thinner and lighter. I want features, damn it.
Chris Martin did a fine job.

8. Apple TV. It doesnt do as much as WD TV Live.

Now, this is such a misguided statement and doesn't represent me, certainly.

I have a 1080p capable 50" plasma set. I have a Blu-Ray player (rentals through Netflix), and use OTA for HD broadcast.

So, most of my content watching on this set is either SD or HD locals.

Adding HD streaming (even 720p) for additional content would be useful to me.

It's not misguided at all. YOU'RE part of the niche. Who in their right mind would pay $4.99 to stream a 720p movie when they can get full HD on demand from cable/satellite for the same price? With most people using Netflix and Hulu on top of that, AppleTV will NEVER be a mainstream product. Most people have absolutely no use for it. If YOU happen to like it then great, but you're part of a small niche (mostly people who blindly cough up money for whatever Apple puts out).

To be honest Chris Martin looked quite nervous for a man whose very career is performing in front of tens of thousands of people. It was the most stripped back thing he's done in years with none of the pomp and grandeur of recent Coldplay gigs. There were many duff chords and his voice was stretched. I'm normally a big fan of his but after such a slick, choreographed keynote it seemed a bit disjointed.

Where's the classic going? I didn't watch the stream, but note that all the other iPods have been updated on the Apple Store whereas the Classic remains the same as it was and still available.
Isn't that sort of the point of a device called "classic"? Wouldn't "new classic" be a contradiction in terms?

It's a legacy product which they keep around because some customers won't let it go. If they changed the interface it wouldn't be "classic", and it already holds a whopping 160 GB, so where would they go from there? They could boost storage capacity to 320 GB (the current largest 1,8" drives), but for who? People who simply must have 1,000 albums ripped to Apple Lossless? It would be the smallest niche Apple ever catered to.

2b. No turtleneck on Steve's shirt. IMO that was the single most revolutionary thing on that stage today.

Was watching on ipad, using 3G. Jobs was talking and introduce Woz then the damn thing started the streaming all over again. So now watching people get thier seats again. HHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I had that happen to me a number of times. I reloaded and it went back to the live feed. I wonder how many viewers were watching this.

I don't have Cable. I think it's way too much money for what they offer, compared to how often I watch TV. On the other hand, I could see myself spending $5 to watch a movie at home every once in a while. And the $99 price almost completely removes the barrier to entry.

So today we lost the hallmark products of the iPod line that propelled Apple onto greatness, The Nano/mini and Classic. R.I.P revolutionary clickwheel...you will be sorely missed .

So the only good thing was the Touch and 4.1/4.2. Oh well...

Oh brother, you sound like it's a human being that died and you're mourning over it.

Get over it, the classic has lived it life way too long. You think Apple is going to continue to pay homage to an old clunker with a click wheel with a standard rotational hard drive? No way.:p

Apple fans always confuse list price with retail price (understandably so because there is no difference between the two in Apple land :D). The device is sold for $119 by Amazon. It does no come with WiFi but it is WiFi capable. One can add USB wireless adapter (for example, very good ASUS USB-N13 Wireless-N Adapter - $22)

Oh so it is not $149, but to actually be functional by normal people it is $119 + $22 which is $141.00

Gotcha...

Thanks for clearing that up. How can they leave built in wifi off? That is stupid.

Enjoy living your life scrolling through Amazon reviews and dreaming about what you could have. I bet you got spec sheets hanging on your ceiling.
