I sometimes let my four year old daughter use an original iPad Mini that we have laying around that I loaded up with some educational apps. I don't think she has learned much from it except that every time she's done using the iPad she throws a huge fit. She doesn't do this with any other toy and is generally a good listener. These devices are addictive and I'm really hesitant to buy her or let her use any iPads for school. Maybe someday I will buy her a MacBook Pro 13" so she can get an advantage over her peers using only iPad, lol.

Open source tablet in a competitive market ? Bit of a pipe dream I feel as isn't like that in gaming or phones either.

Joz got a dig in at Google with his better than web based apps comment. Seems a little tone deaf considering Apple hasn’t really done much with iWork suite the past few years.

My son is three and while he does watch YouTube (for kids), he has plenty of educational apps he will play with himself.

A10 chip called it

So this is like a 2017 regular iPad successor essentially. Sweet. For people that want that

Im actually bummed we just got my daughter (7) a 2017 (which she loves to be creative with... she makes a lot of movie trailers). She would LOVE the stuff they are showing with the pencil.

I currently have the 2017 iPad and think this is a nice upgrade. I like the fact you can use the pencil on it now. I don't know that I'll upgrade to this, I want to see what happens with the 10.5" Pros this summer.
