I don't agree. It simply means that in order to make the newly announced MBP look better they had to compare it to their first notebook.

I don't think it is a sign of them doing anything different. This past week was the 15th anniversary of the iPod and Apple was completely silent.

Cool you don't have to agree and pretty much the iPod is "Dead man walking" at this point so no reason for them to mention it. It was the 25th anniversary of their first portable which they did acknowledge that was different.

I know that many are disappointed by what was announced and probably more by what wasn't announced. I'm sad to see the end of the 11" MBA, magsafe, and all of the other features that made the MBA line shine. There are many things to be disappointed in.

Having said that...

Maybe I'm way off base on this, but I think that the real reason for introducing Touch Bar was NOT to eliminate the function keys or as a gimmick but to dip their toe into introducing touch capabilities to macOS. I can see a future MBP that replaces the TrackPad with a Touch Pad that is essentially an iPhone screen.

If this was their motivation for the Touch Bar, then I applaud them for taking an intelligent, incremental step rather than leaping into the deep end of the pool approach that Microsoft took with Windows 8.0 and the Surface Pro.

Honestly, I find it hard to believe it was an intelligent step when they should've had the courage to dive all in with a touch screen built into the monitor. After all, touch screen tech has been around for YEARS now. What is Apple waiting for? There is no need to wait to get it right. They already have the tech. They just need to grow a pair of nuts to implement it and get on with the program.

You know what, I am happy about this event. Now at least I know the direction of Apple, and can safely make the move to the competition without fearing they will pull something outta their hat. I have a MBpro that is in need of an upgrade (2014 model I believe) and it will probably be a mid tier surface laptop (with proper nvidia gpu). I am gonna miss OS X though, but I'm actually mad at how they've "flipped us the bird" in this event.

Now you're just justifying their anorexic need to be thinner. They could have easily kept those ports without trying to create a knife-edge MBP.

It's not the thinness, it's placement. The board doesn't go down that far anymore, with the battery. I don't need thin either

With Windows 10 "Creators" update maybe macOS will be not relevant anymore? Hopefully MS will detail how Adobe products will work with the Surface Studio & Dial.

do people just post on this board to rip on apple? Seems pointless and a waste of time.

I have been an ardent user of Mac since my white G5 iMac in 2005. I currently have a Mid 2010 iMac and 2011 MBA. I have had nearly every generation of iPhone and have owned two iPads. However, this was disappointing. Not necessarily from the design or the specs although I was somewhat underwhelmed. For me it's the new price points.
Apple is apparently reluctantly keeping the $999 13" MBA as an entry point for college students and first time Mac users but the $1499 price point for the non-touch bar MBP is crap particularly when it has only two USB-C ports (regardless of attaching a hub at and extra expense). The $1800 price point is absurd: 13"? 8GB RAM? That's just gouging.
I think there is a point where many every day consumers will just tell Apple to GFY. I am close to that point myself. However, I may consider buying a current generation iMac and customize it. The touch bar is gimmicky. Screw it.

The horror! The horror! I have never seen this much anger directed at an Apple event. When the fanboys return from their local Apple store, after having opened their wallets wide to flood Apple with orders for these new and innovative products, you detractors had better be gone. Their fury will be cruel, for it is strong.

I haven't looked into the Mac Pro sales figures, but they couldn't have been that good because Apple clearly aren't interested in it anymore.

Long story short, if a product sells well enough, Apple will keep updating it.

You honestly believe that? If there's one thing we know about Apple it's that they are perfectly happy to make products or dump products regardless of how well they sell. Apple doesn't care about the public. They make the products they want to make and they expect the public to just accept whatever they feel like releasing.

A lot of us are posting here because we used to like Apple and the products they made. They fit into our lives very well. Now Apple has lost it and slowly I'm noticing that Apple products are being replaced.

I've used an iPhone ever since it came on my carrier. Then when they had their feud with Google and made it difficult for me to get my Gmail or forced me to use Apple Maps, I got an Android.

All my computers were Macs, but I couldn't justify the price point for the trash can as my primary computing (read gaming) device so I built a desktop on my own.

Now, I am looking to replace my MacBook with a non-Mac because I can't justify buying a new MacBook.

Based on what I am seeing, lots of long time Apple users are saying the same.

Used mac's for over 12 years now, and this is the first day that I've ever posted a negative response to an Apple keynote.

It's like Apple went and said to everyone:

"Hey guys! Got some new products to announce today that will totally blow you away. Check out the video here!"

The tapering is just an illusion of size. Make a slot the width and depth of a 13 pro and try and get a 13' air though that the same hole.
It's not an illusion of size. It tapers into .3 inches. Measurements aren't imaginary. The thickness of the new Pro is uniform.

Hey everyone. You won't believe the horrible dream I had! Ugh. I must have missed the preso. What does the new iMac look like? How's the pricing on the mini? How do you open the new redesigned Mac Pro? Did they show how easy it is to put more RAM in the new laptops?

I dreamed that all they did was show a new MacBook with an emoji bar that costs even more! Whew glad I woke up!

Well, it provided the impetus to order a new Magsafe charger and a 256 GB Jetdrive Lite 360 for my existing MBP . . .

I'm disappointed in the pricing - $2400 for the base 15 (still with 16/256) is simply taking the p**s, as the British say.

I used to have a MacBook Pro "retina" when it first was introduced, it was my first and last MacBook. Not because it sucked, just because my life didn't have room for one. My line of work made it a challenge to have a Mac and my recreational life includes gaming, which at the time wasn't that great on Mac.

Though this MacBook has me very interested, chances are I will be buying an Aorus with a GTX1070, just because it ticks more marks on my use case than MacBook.

I really like the new Macbooks though, it to me seems like the right way to move. Contextual keys seem like the way of the future. Now they just need to release a USB keyboard with an OLED screen on it. This way Mac Pro users can utilize this too.

I am so disheartened that Apple lacks the creativity and innovation I've come to love about. They stopped thinking outside the box since Steve passed. The MBP line is suppose to be their flagship desktop replacements...why remove ports that were so useful! In real world scenario no one is going to be using that touch bar on a daily basis.

All I wanted was:

- Same old ports, maybe some USB-C(whatever)
- Thinner and lighter
- Better screen
- Better keyboard
- up-to-date hardware

call it a day and I would be buying it right now.

Just got home and reviewed the summary. I was waiting patiently for a new iMac and !
Was going to consider the MacBook Pro and scrolled to the price vs specs. You have to be kidding me. $1800 for 13" and 8gb RAM because it has a touch bar. There is just no value in that at all.
I imagine we'll see a similar price hike when they eventually update the iMac.
Disappointing and underwhelming.
I agree. I am so totally PO that I have been waiting for the iMac to be updated to no avail. Very lame and limited, boring and underwhelming Mac event.

Apple just had us waste 1.5hrs for a mediocre, expensive laptop in which the main feature is a replacement for Function keys.

This is just the beginning.... wait for Tim's next trick when he again upgrades the MacBook Pro line with replacing the whole keyboard with OLED 3 - 5 yrs from now.

The TV app wasn't impressive? That's the Steve Jobs "I cracked it" thing right? Only problem is Amazon & Netflix won't play ball.

I've been an Apple fanboy for 25 years. I've bought so much of their stuff. I'm typing this on a 12.9" iPad Pro. My iPhone 7 is charging on my left-hand nightstand and my Apple Watch is charging on the right-hand one. I love them all.

I would probably upgrade my 13" MacBook Pro to the new one with the Touch Bar. I pretty much always do. I'm an upgrade junkie.

But it's £1749. That's nearly double what I paid for my existing MacBook (with educational discount). There's no way I could afford that. Even if I could, what would I be getting for the money?

Apple's new policy is clearly to aim at the luxury end of the market and it's just way too rich for me.

They're killing the goose that laid the golden eggs. It's greed. It's that simple. And I don't have that kind of money.

Did you get the iPhone on the upgrade plan or purchase outright?

Until Apple cuts back on its obsession with emojis and other gimmicks TouchBar will be the result. The only useful feature with TouchBar is the touch ID. Pro's don't take their eyes off the screen and look at the keyboard while they work. That's why we all learned type. Pro's don't even like touch the mouse or trackpad; that's why they memorize hot keys, you know, to get things done faster. There's no real usefulness in trackbar as far as I saw today. It's just duplicating features that can be done faster on the physical keyboard and trackpad.

It survived another year, thankfully.
[doublepost=1477597516][/doublepost]

I noticed it in the video. Still there.

I'll eat my hat if the next (and perhaps last) MBP refresh in Fall 2018 still has a headphone jack.
[doublepost=1477609038][/doublepost]On a side note, and maybe its just me, but everytime I look at the title for this MR thread I read the word "coverage" as "courage"

Pro meaning Professional, as in the three main "professional" categories apple explored and demonstrated today - Video editing, Photography, and Music Production. If you're not in any of these three categories than YOUR "pro" does not equal what apple considers pro.
great, thanks for supporting what I said.

I'm very sad to say this:

I think we have seen the death of Apple. Microsoft has usurped them as of yesterday. The keynote today filled me with dismay. I have been a shareholder since 2010 and made a lot of money. I am considering my options now.

There is a time for everything. A time to live, and a time to die. Rest in peace, Apple. I loved you.
Why so pessimistic? I'm not a fan of Cook but they are moving in the right direction this time. Central TV app, and that touch bar seems to be a nice working idea, really improving the workflow, although it could be presented better. I could almost tell Cook is thinking about what Microsoft presented yesterday, he was kind of pensive today. Speaking of Macs the key thing they'll need to do now is to add touch support to Macs, that seems to be the future. They'll definitely need to do something with iMac and MacBook as well. I'll give them 1-2 more years, and see what they'll do with the iPhone 8.

Ironically, these 3D features, which Microsoft presented yesterday, Apple had years ago. QuickTime had support for 3D and VR since 90s, but it was dropped with transition to OS X.
