Just wondering why they would drop the iPad 3 and keep the 2?
Because the differences between the 3 and the 4 are so small, the price tags would look weird. Plus, the old school display on the iPad Mini needs some company.

Apple Presentation on aTV

Watched the new product presentation through the aTV3 today. I was a little disappointed in the streaming quality. Got several buffering stutters and sometimes the picture when get slightly pixelated/juddery. All of my downloading stuff is butter smooth, so I was expecting something similar. Not sure if it was the stream source, my iso (11Mbps), my wifi or what. But this is not normally the way it looks/behaves. If this is what streaming tv might be like on the aTV, it will be a loser. What was your experience?

And you are from Texas? Let me rephrase: when you do not buy Apple product you do not pay Apple TAX :D

Apple tax - a cute little phrase coined to describe the premium Apple charges. Yes I'm from Texas - not sure what that as to do with anything.

I know I could pay less for an inferior product (I have - owned a Nexus 7 for nearly 3 months and promptly sold it). I don't mind the markup. I'm getting more than a piece of hardware - which is certainly a product of my immersion in the ecosystem. Nonetheless, the price point is still closer to the current 7inch tablets (with inferior build quality and - based on preference - an inferior OS) than it is to the 10 inch iPad retina.

Your iPad 2 probably can run Android, Symbian and even the forthcoming Windows RT, but why can't it have it?

Currently we're living the dictatorship of the "ecosystems". I was happy in the PC era when we were free to install anything a Intel processor could run. Maybe in the future we'll have "ecosystem free" hardware and software.

Yeah well I definitely cop to thinking I'll be much happier when people finally come around to agreeing on a standard protection format for ebooks. Meantime I'd like an app that lists all my ebook purchases (shows cover icons too) and lets me click through to launch the right app for some damn book instead of opening three apps to see where the thing is that I was reading yesterday on my iPhone and want to resume now on an iPad.

I really need that app. I wouldn't need it if the industry would agree on a protection format that was the same across sellers. i pay for my ebooks and it ticks me off to have to remember who sold me which one. Sure we have room in our brains for trivia like that but then so does my iPhone's memory have room for an app that could do it for me, and better yet how about industry realizing this is a pain in the neck for book consumers?

Seriously. Why can't we "burn" an unprotected copy to our drives in a common format (a la MP3 or AAC) after we make the book purchase. There could be ID tags in it so it could be tracked if we make illegal loans or shares of the books. I just don't get why I need to stick with one vendor or put up with this merry go round of remembering which book came from which seller.

Meanwhile I share your hope that the age of ecosystems will fade into the age of accommodating the customer's need for cross-platform usage. For awhile there I thought we were heading in that direction. It's unfortunate that the era of ever better tech and the advent of ebooks etc. have brought us to a whole new round of competitive, proprietary, mutually exclusive file and processing attributes.

At $329 - the 16GB iPad mini is $80 MORE than the 16GB N7 (currently) and $170 LESS than the 16GB iPad retina....

The price is more or less adequate. When you pay an Apple product you pay the Apple tax - everyone knows this. You pay for the exceptional customer service, the ease of use, the seamless eco-system, the build quality.

For me, the $329 price point is fine. I know I'm getting Apple quality (sorry N7 and the shoddy display) and it's much closer in price to the low end tablets than the iPad retina.

iPad's have consistently been $100 more....why is this price point surprising and disappointing?

I don't think any would be buyers will be dissuaded by the extra $30. $329 is so reasonable for this beautiful piece of technology. Remember how expensive the first few generations of iPods were?

APPL stock tumbling down to 615. wow.

As it should.
Apple coming out with 7" tablet is against what Jobs proclaimed.
It shows Apple feels a need to counter Amazon/Google/other tablets, meaning iPad is not as invincible.
There are others reasons but for now the number '7' isn't a lucky # for Apple.

I was able to stream the whole thing on my iPad via LTE at work. I thought my data would run out (had 1.8 GB left) but made it to the end with about 150 MB to spare! lol

No issues in streaming - no hiccups and the HD quality was beautiful.

You really do have to hand it to Apple. The Fusion Drive has become the new IT feature for the decade. This is all just too much. I can't ever remember so many new and updated products being announced in one day. Looks like I will be busy for the rest of the week. Lots to explore now.

Are you kidding? These all are mostly just spec/CPU bumps that all other companies do on a daily basis. Looking at AAPL free fall after today's announcement this must be the worst Apple product announcement ever.

I know you can pre-order the iPad 4 this Friday, and will be shipped November 2nd. I wonder will they be in Apple stores the 2nd? If that's the case I can wait until they show up in stores.

Lol - Apple currently owns about 60% of the tablet market. The mini will only cause that number to increase. I expect Apple to rise back up over 70% with MS and Amazon stealing share from Android.

Apple - 70%
Amazon - 12%
Android - 10%
MS - 8%

What other computer companies announce doubling of performance and CPU increases from quad 2.5 standard to 2.9 on a "daily basis"???

The CPUs are updated as Intel releases new versions....last I checked, most companies use either AMD or Intel processors and the base models are the same across the board....

As for the mobile announcements - doubling performance of a device which is already an efficiency marvel and powerhouse is fantastic. But you're one of those people who wouldn't be satisfied even if you owned a freaking Sequoia that fit in the palm of your hand....

so why is stock price of apple going down? because people feel betrayed that Jobs said they won't make 7" tablet and now they did?

Yes, but other companies have dozens of models - so they do a lot of updates. Besides, Ivy Bridge has been available since April 29, 2012. Apple is a few quarters behind everybody else with this update.

My assumption is simply that the iPad 3 was the only current iProduct which still used the old connection port, and if they had to update that anyways, they felt they may as well give it the speed bump to last a year.
Still can't imagine anyone throwing away their iPad 3 to buy an iPad 4 though.

I don't think Apple plans to sell many 4th gen iPads to 3rd gen owners. However, updating the specs helps them sell to new buyers.

612.:mad: I bought at 619 to make quick profit but set it at 630 instead of 625. So from up a couple hundy to down couple.
Never buy for a "quick profit", especially on such a volatile stock. There's going to be a lot more roller-coastering over the next couple weeks with earnings report coming out. In the end, it will revert to the mean and share price will depend on fundamentals - with those fundamentals still exploding, price will go up, on average, over time. I bought some more at $619 today, and yes, it's off another $7. No big deal. Fair price is probably 18x earnings, which would put share price around $740 (and higher still after upcoming earnings release.) Right now, trading at around 14x earnings, which is ridiculously low.

You're never going to find the bottom, or the top. And getting excited over a less-than-1% difference just isn't worth it. Especially considering the 52-week-low was $363 late last fall.

There's a big difference between 7.9" 4x3 and 7" 16x9. Anyway, I think the Street would have preferred a cheaper iPad to blow away the Android competition. This one leaves the Nexus 7 and certainly Kindle Fire some room. That said, Apple wasn't about to release another plasticky device. A Retina Display this small in late 2012 would have been too expensive, plus Apple is having enough issues keeping up with iPhone 5 demand, so something else to constrain supplies is not warranted.

In the end, Apple put out the right product at the right price. It might take the Street some time to realize that.

My thoughts:

• Where is the new Mac Pro we have been waiting for for ages?
• Why no optical drive in the iMac? Priority for a desktop should hardly be to make it as thin as possible, but as good as possible.
• Why cant you get iMacs with fusion drives or better GPUs without having to upgrade to the best CPU?
• Is the RAM not upgradable on the 21" iMacs? I hope it is just a mistake on the tech spec page, because having a computer with no user upgradable part whatsoever would be imbecile.
• Will you not be able to get the iMac with a wired keyboard with a numeric keypad?

That is all the whining from me for this time :p

(oh yeah, and all the iOS features newer versions of OS X has received should be removed and forgotten about. But that is all the complaints i have. :D)
