Surface is the first touch tablet with full PC OS. iOS (and Android) are not in the same category - those are phone OSes.

The iPhone and iPad are PCs. Just portable touch based ones. So that kinda invalidates your statement. But in all fairness I get that you mean. First desktop OS to be ported to a tablet. I think that's a bad idea. As it won't be touch tablet optimised.

The phrase is commonly said both ways and means the same thing either way. Since this is informal communication, it's fine and correct to use common sayings -- whether they make sense when parsed literally or not.

So that other poster should be the one apologizing; for being both pedantic and wrong.

Just because a lot of people are wrong, doesn't suddenly make it ok to use. I have apologised, but not for any of your reasons.

Maybe so. But he's not around anymore. People need to get used to that and let the new folks in charge chart their own course. I don't think it's that big a deal. And I have the iPad "3". It's a faster processor and a different plug. Big deal. You know when it comes to tech that whatever you buy is always going to be "out of date" by the time you get it home.

Big bad marks for anybody getting stuck in the trope of "But Steve wouldn't do this." Nobody knows what Steve would have done. Steve changed his mind all the time. Steve stopped the live streams because too many people were getting stop-and-start and frozen streams. I think Apple must have come far enough now that the stream was excellent for most.

This was a new kind of event. It was the same speech that Jobs honed for years, with Cook wisely splitting up the speaking tasks because he's not the spellbinder Jobs was. But the new theater, the new music at the beginning, even, the Apple celebrity audience, this was Cook's first really good announcement.

This one will be the first Apple tablet costing less than R$1000,00 (~USD 500) in Brazil. So for the brazilian people's eyes, it will be a good deal. Probably it's already being made here.

iPad 2 WiFi-only costs around USD 560,00 here, so I presume this iPad Mini will cost around USD 499,00 or R$ 1000,00 in Brazil.

On the other hand, a basic Galaxy Tab 7" costs only USD 300,00. Since a lot of brazilians buy Apple products as a status symbol, I expect the Mini will sell very well.

Wtf... If it's in fair condition, you could fetch much more than that. Heck, I would buy it off you for that price.

I've got a Gazelle price locked up for my 32GB 3rd gen of $400 :D Not sure if they ultimately reserve the right to say no after receipt if the market takes a dive or not.

Honestly, I don't think I'd do it anyway, was interested, then figure WTF, might as well save the quoted offer.

Listen everyone, IMPLICIT in every Apple purchase is that I will be cool for NO LESS THAN ONE YEAR knowing I have the latest, best product on earth.

Apple is breaking this code with its customers. MAJOR FAIL

Hopefully you just omitted the /satire footnote there, pal.

Otherwise: Hello? There's no such code. You don't have to buy an upgrade, and if you do buy one then (whether you realize it or not) it's because something about it appeals to you enough to part with the dough. If you're parting with the money because you think you will be cool for another year, that is so 1990s.

I'm old but even I get that the refresh cycle on tech is stepped up in the 21st century. I refresh when I feel like it, and I don't care if Apple refreshes again on day three of my ownership of whatever I just bought. Why? Because I don't buy something unless I think the specs of what I'm buying make sense for my purposes.

Now the specs of lots of things would meet my needs, but I'm not made of money so I'm not going to buy every iteration of a product as it comes out. I want that new mini because I've been using a Nook for that size tablet and would rather get back to Apple ecosystem. I want the new regular iPad because I still have the original and would like to upgrade while the hand-me-down of my original still offers value to its next owner in my family. I think I can manage both of these on my budget (I'm about to crunch those numbers) and if so then I'm going to get them both. But I don't expect anything from either one of them as far as where their technologies will stand versus rest of the world in another six months, two months, three years. I don't have a clue. And because I like the specs of what I am about to buy, it doesn't matter to me.

There have been drives doing this automatically. There are actually three ways to do this:

1. Separate - the user has to move things to the right place. An absolute pain and IMO totally negates the speed advantage.

2. Together using a more or less clever controller: There is a bit of hardware that controls what goes where. A lot better. And you can buy this. Not cheap.

3. Controlled by the operating system. I think that's Apple only. That's the best way to do it. For example, the OS can reorganise things in the night. Cache all writes onto the SSD drive, then move things that look unimportant to the hard drive in the night.

Cool, thanks for the explanation

I said the Samsung Note looks like an iPhone. Not sized like an iPhone.

Maybe taking what someone else did and making it bigger is what Samsung calls "design work?"
Screen size and the hand modeling is what gave me the vibe. I am not sure what else you are working with.

Many people don't have English as their first language, and the problem is that incorrect usage like that is (1) hard to understand and (2) can lead to those people using incorrect language as well. You can bet that this incorrect usage was picked up on the internet.

(There was a report that in Finland, where lots of TV is English with subtitles, they are moving to produce subtitles cheaper by using less qualified people. There is the fear that this will create problems with the ability of people to write properly, because a huge percentage of reading that kids do is reading subtitles on TV).

Sorry, but "I could care less" is fine in this context. Consider your objections: (1) no one -- including the non-English-speaking poster -- had trouble understanding this common turn of phrase; (2) A circular argument. Colloquialisms have never needed to make literal sense to be used successfully for communication. Why treat this one differently?

I would have liked to see it at $299 but $30 extra isn't the end of the world. Just don't buy a lightning adapter with it and its the same. I think eventually it will come down to $299.

Exactly how I feel about it. I was originally hoping they'd be super aggressive and go for $249, but when I saw the latest prices on the new iPod Touch, I knew it wouldn't happen. $299 would have been better, but $329 is okay.

Its not so much a "code" as it is a guideline......

It's tough but then again it is Japan.

Also, 16 GB is a lot better than 8.

LOL love the commnent on that site with the Startrek facepalm and "VIRGINS" caption...

As far as women and tech, or men and tech, the 21st century is working out well. People give less of a damn about categorizing anything as gender-specific and that seems healthy to me. Men and women work, men and women spend money on tech appliances. It sure makes it easier to sell toasters, widgets, laptops when one can very safely assume that both women and men are the consumers. Heading in the direction of the Floral Kiss brand of laptops, I dunno... :) that seems a lot braver than Apple deciding to come out with a mini iPad!
