Siri is a gimmick and irrelevant. Using your hands is still more accurate than speaking, and there are few circunstances in which using your hands isn't as viable as talking (in fact, I can think of many circunstances in which using hands is more viable than talking).

Funny fact: I'm in Brazil. The iPhones released here are translated to Portuguese and adapted to our country (phone number syntax is different from what the Americans use, for example). However, the spell check system is horrible; when I'm typing in English or in Portuguese, the automatic correction keeps suggesting words that don't exist in either language. And that's with pure text, which is easy to fix. Imagine how poorly the voice recognisition system of Siri is going to work here.

The lack of a big update is underwhelming; I was expecting more than just a slightly faster iPhone 4 with a slightly better camera and a gimmick feature. What I'm really disappointed with is that Apple has kept the "glass brick" design, instead of picking something actually ergonomic.

This may be a shock to some of you, but I'll just keep my current 3GS (if it breaks, replacing it will be cheap, at least). I hope the next iPhone (5? 6? 4GS?) will actually be revolutionary, instead of just slightly evolutionary.

You should probably shop for 32GB Micro SDHC cards with decent speed, pretty close to the same price. And, of course, there are no 64GB Micros, yet.

I've never had an Android phone, but I think they come with onboard memory as well as the expandable slot, (so no need for a 64g microcard, even if they had them)

feel the same way

It is probably the first time in the last 2 years or so that Apple unveils something that I DO NOT instantly want to buy...

A bit disappointed, although looking at the bright side,it will save me some money..

Getting the feeling that Apple enters into some kind of Intel-like tick-tock cycle with the iPhones: 3G/3GS, 4/4S...so I'll be buying every "tick" cycle-the redesign obviously...

Not exactly disappointed > the upgrades are there but I do not like the design of the iPhone 4 personally so no upgrade for me. So I will hope my 3GS holds out until the next phone is released (would be nice if they go back to the summer launches).

Agree with the release schedule you've mentioned and saving $. Sure could do that now.

Shame about battery life...

Nice update for many people I'm sure, just not enough to make me give up my 4. Especially with the much shorter battery life, I thought these were mobile-phones, not only-move-as-far-as-the-charger-cable-reaches phones! Haha :D

Uh, yeah, typing on an iOS device is an absolute delight, especially when doing something active.... I really can't tell if you're being ironic or serious here?

Has the thought occurred to you that Apple may have paid up to $200 million for Siri because it works better than any implement of VR tech they've tried to date?

You'd better get on the horn to Redmond, WA while you are at it. Mango has some killer voice rec tech forthcoming as well. Seems like the major players in the industry seem to be investing their time and money in this tech in accelerated fashion. They'll be crushed when they hear you have determined it to be a gimmick without even trying it. [/QUOTE]

No problem: we will put you down in the "image is everything" camp. I'm on the other side of the fence with the "form follows function" faction. ;-)

@ Teste

Maybe if you used Siri you wouldn't have had as many spelling errors though :)

Let the down-voting begin!

So basically all those following the rumors were hoping for:

1) A bigger screen, 2) Thinner casing, 3) LTE

1) A bigger screen would compromise battery life as well as retina resolution.
2) Thinner casing doesn't make sense without a bigger screen, Apple already engineers phones to tightly pack all of the components into extremely thin device. iPhone 4 is still the thinnest phone out as far as I know. Samsung phones and the like have thinner bodies but also have at least one part of the phone that is thicker than the iPhone.
3) LTE isn't even deployed to a wide market yet. ATT has very little only in select markets. It would not make sense for Apple to release LTE that would compromise battery life under the current environment. Also, LTE isn't too important considering that most carriers have data caps and those with unlimited data have data throttles.

Here's a doom and gloom article from reuters, I'm sure we'll se many like this in the coming weeks: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/04/apple-iphone-idUSN1E7931NK20111004

... just like we saw last year when the iPhone 4 was released: http://www.thestreet.com/story/10776650/1/apple-investors-leave-unimpressed.html?cm_ven=GOOGLEFI

End point, iPhone 4S delivers the same great experience that the iPhone 4 was doing but with enhanced speeds in virtually every hardware aspect and that will all carry into the user experience. Expect the 4S to sell in record numbers.

Boyeeee will you be ticked when the new iphone5 comes out next spring, and you still have a year and a half left on your 4s contract.
(you're going to miss out on the next 2 iphones if you sign rt now)

The 4GS is quite an upgrade from a 3GS. If I had a 3GS I'd surly upgrade.

You must be one of those "Apple can do no wrong" guys...

Ummm, the phrase is "bald face(d)", I believe.
"A barefaced (or bald-faced) lie is one that is obviously a lie to those hearing it. The phrase comes from 17th-century British usage referring to those without facial hair as being seen as particularly forthright and outwardly honest, and therefore more likely to get away with telling a significant lie."

"A variation that has been in use almost as long is bold-faced lie, referring to a lie told with a straight and confident face (hence "bold-faced"), usually with the corresponding tone of voice and emphatic body language of one confidently speaking the truth."

You couldn't be more wrong. However, I am one of those "can't stomach unsubstantiated criticism of technologies by those who've yet to try it" kind of guys.

But, if it would make you happy, I could learn the secret handshake and start parroting cool phrases like "meh" and "Epic Fail".... ;-)

By the way, I'd suggest reading some of the first independent reviews of 4S+Siri. You won't see words like "irrelevant", nor "gimmick", trust me.
Pretty much what I've been saying today.

Perhaps, but wikianswers disagrees:
Is the correct term 'bold face lie' or 'bald faced lie' or another variation?
Answer:
The original term seems to have been bald-faced (bare-faced) and refers to a face without whiskers. Beards were commonly worn by businessmen in the 18th and 19th century as an attempt to mask facial expressions when making business deals. Thus a bald-faced liar was a very good liar indeed, and was able to lie without the guilt showing on his face.

The more correct term is "bald-faced lie" or "bare-faced lie" (bare is more common in Great Britain). It refers to a "shameless" or "brazen" lie. One where the teller does not attempt to hide his face while telling it.

It's just the last 5 yrs or so that "bold" has come into usage. It refers to typeface. It is used metaphorically in speech. In the same way that a typesetter uses bold face type to highlight specific text and set it apart, a bold face lie stands out in such a way as to not be mistaken for the truth.
More Information

The phrase can either be used as bold-faced lie, as in someone with a bold enough face to lie (bold meaning daring, or brazen) or someone bold enough to lie to your face; it can also be used as bald-faced lie, where the older meaning of bald (meaning uncovered or unconcealed) - the more correct usage with this term is bare-faced lie. Earlier editions of Merriam Webster define bold-faced as someone being bold or forward, with no relation to

Glad I didn't stay up to watch the video or I would've been disappointed AND wasted my sleep. Bah.

I thought it was obvious from the context of my post, and the one to which I was responding to, I was discussing the upgrade of 4 to 4S.

And even though that renders the bulk of your response moot, I will concede I didn't know there were f/2.2 smartphones out there. I've got friends with various android versions and have always felt their photo quality, irrespective of pixel depth of the sensor or widest aperture of the lens, was inferior to that of even a 3GS, but I've not tested this empirically... ..and I think the problem implementing optical zooms directly stems from physics- to zoom (non-digitally) requires focal length to increase, hence the issue...

And regardless of what your context refers to, this is most definitely a mild update. Everything that was updated was the minimum that Apple could have done. While the 4S is definitely a solid update, it's not ground-breaking, and it's not a significant update.

As far as image quality goes, I've seen plenty of smartphones that perform rather well. I don't know what the pool of phones you look at, but just going through various samples on sites such as GSM Arena, the iPhone 4 isn't astronomically superior or anything.

Optical zooms aren't necessarily difficult to implement, but it can't be done in an ultraslim phone. There's a design called folded optics, designed for maintaing a low profile with no protruding lens elements.

bought aapl at 100ish because i thought they were innovating seriously. Sold it at 220ish. Now, this is investing on the prospect of the company's possible expansion. Why on earth should I now invest in a company that totally topped itself and doesn't innovate anymore? This is catching up, not innovating. It's becoming more and more obvious that apple will lose the android competition in a few years. But then again, you are a professional trader, so you know better.

Speaking true was Never popular. ;)

I'll be honest, I was expecting some rather big announcements today but there was more new features and services unveiled than I had expected, which of course is a good thing.

For example, I certainly wasn't expecting to hear about Siri, in all honesty I hadn't even heard of that technology until today. There were a lot of cool updates and announcements at today's keynote but Siri, at least in my opinion, was by far the most advanced and impressive of them all. I know it's still in BETA but I'm in awe at the capabilities it has. It's scary intelligent almost.

How do you guys think Tim Cook did overall? It was odd not seeing Steve Jobs there, but I think the new CEO did a great job nonetheless.

One thing I was disappointed about was that there is no LTE option for iPhone 4S, and this isn't so much a disappointment but I was expecting to hear about the iPhone 5, but iPhone 4S is still nothing to frown upon I suppose.

I don't understand this notion that suddenly Apple isn't innovating anymore. Siri integration alone is a huge innovation. Then check this out:

There are all kinds of amazing inventions here that Apple will be putting in products very soon. F.e., the ability to using physics gestures to "flick" objects from one iOS device to another and many other mind-blowing things.
