Again, I'm not sure what other convincing you need to know that it actually does run OS X, beyond that Apple has already said it and shown it running OS X apps and capabilities, far beyond what Palm OS is capable of.

hehe, don't worry, when the tech specs out, i will figure out by myself, im not saying it absolutely doesn't, i m just saying it doesn't need to run full OSX to do the work Jobs showed today.

My personal feeling is that they probably doesn't need to put full OSX in it anyway. its a phone, with mp3/video player, plus several apps. No need to get too complicated and waste too much space on the hard-driver/flashdrive in there

I agree with that. I am looking forward to hearing more on the developer side of things (i.e. just what kind of stuff can you create for the iPhone, etc.). All of the previous rumors hinted at some sort of embedded OS X, and it does seem like that could be what this is. The question if it is just OS X with an iPhone specific front-end, or a stripped down OS X (kind of like Windows Mobile). Either way, it's pretty cool to me. Especially with Palm OS being dead in the water (and not really being too confident in what Access is doing with the Palm OS replacement "Access Linux Platform"), I am excited to see what this new device could offer, since I've never really liked the Windows mobile devices. I admit I don't know as much about Symbian (although I liked the EPOC OS back in the Psion days).

It does run OS X. Check the iPhone specs here : http://www.apple.com/iphone/technology/specs.html

lol, that one is too brief. Like Zadillo said, i want to know more about if its just a strip down core with several limited apps, or with greater flexibility for 3rd part user to add more apps. or whatever else it can do other than Jobs showed so far.

anyway, another thing i was wondering, is this phone's internet works just like a small computer, i.e. integrated wireless card, can connect to any home network? or it works through cingular internet service, bundled with cingular's phone service? Would be nice if its former, coz cingular's internet service charge ALOT.

Edit: it looks like the internet service can use home network, this is good.

Yes, it has WiFi.

Re: cingular's internet service, I pay $20/month for unlimited data. I suspect that Cingular will have some special voice/unlimited data plan for the iPhone.

If I was holding off until now to buy a MacBook, I would just as soon hold off until the Spring when I could get a MacBook with Leopard (and presumably iLife 07 as well, which I wouldn't have expected to already be available for sale).

Well, I really need it before I head away to a conference in February, but the sooner I get it and upgrade from the half-broken Windows laptop I'm using now, the better.

BTW. What happened to that slider type iPhone which our MacRumors.com was so sure of?

Well first off MS was never sure of anything. This is a rumors site who generally speaking reports about other site's rumors. Secondly the slider rumor came from another site that was "sure" of it.

There's running OS X and then there is RUNNING OS X. who knows what kinda of API has been migrated over to the iPhone. Heck do we even know if this thing supports 3rd party apps? If so my money is on new tools at WWDC in June\July which happens to also be the launch date of the iPhone. Chance? Doubt it.

PS- WWDC was pushed ahead this..check that last year because of the Mac Pros. '03-'05 all were in June/July.

iPhone Runs OS X & Desktop Applications

This fact was not reported in the live coverage. Makes me completely change my opinion of what happened this morning. Watching the SteveNote now fills in a huge number of overlooked and under reported facts he went over but the reporters did not tell us. :)

Screw the iPhone, just give me a 640 x 360 widescreen Video iPod with a 100GB HD that works like that. :p

I think I better apologize for my derogatory comments about this SteveNote. Watching it is a radically different experience than reading a real time reporter's interpretation of what he/she is watching.

You MUST WATCH The SteveNote to understand what he did.

I don't recall any report that Cingular is now with AT&T. That changes everything for me because I am an AT&T landline and DSL customer. So if I can get a package deal that adds iPhone for less than list, I may bite sooner than I thought this morning.

good job MacRumors! I use macrumorslive this morning and it alll worked well... updates were nice and fast, and there was no bandwith issues. Thanks to all that helped make it go so smoothly!

Just watching the keynote right now. You know guys, those who are out there criticising this keynote and the phone, this thing is too good to be true. And 'real' Mac stuff is rolling out the coming months as promised by SJ. Expect several more big announcements and keynotes in the coming months. I'm excited!! :D

I don't recall any report that Cingular is now with AT&T.

This might get confusing (Summarized from engadget)

1984
US Gov't splits AT&T into the regional "Baby Bells"

Late 90's
One of the Bells, Southwestern Bell, scoops up PacBell, Southern New England Telecom, and Ameritech becoming officially known as SBC.

2000
SBC created a joint venture with Bell South named Cingular Wireless.
SBC owns 60% of Cingular, Bell South the other 40%

2001
AT&T spins off their wireless division and calls it AT&T Wireless

2004
Cingular acquires AT&T Wireless from AT&T. Now, AT&T retains the brand name rights to "AT&T Wireless" which it plans to re-spawn after Cingular completes the acquisition.

2005
SBC reaches an agreeement to buy AT&T after already buying its wireless business. They decide to call it AT&T Wireless in some markets and leave it as Cingular in most others.

Oh, yeah, and SBC decides to take on the name AT&T after the merger.

2006
AT&T (formerly SBC) announces purchase of BellSouth (it's partner in Cingular)

Basically the last 23 years of breaking up the monopoly were all for not.
As of today...

AT&T = SBC = Cingular = AT&T Wireless = BellSouth (awaiting approval)

Yeah, watching the keynote and actually seeing Steve demo it helps a lot to understand it.

I also thought it was interesting that he did mention that they are planning on 3G support in future iPhones, etc. so for anyone worried about that, it's definitely something they are thinking of.

Yes, I believe this is the case - that's why I am very much looking forward to watching the Keynote. I fully expect that text updates and still pictures simply don't do it justice.

If you haven't seen them yet, I also highly recommend watching the movies at apple.com/iphone - helped me a lot to understand what the iPhone is (and why this is a lot bigger I think than some of the people who are saying this isn't any different from any other phone out there that can play mp3's, etc.).

Cool, thanks for the head's up, I'll definitely check them out.

Come on, guys and girls. You have to have a long range vision. Computers will soon be iPhones, mainly because of Apple.

I think the biggest problem then is that Apple misnamed this product. It's confusing because it's not (just) a phone. Maybe they should have called it the MacPod, or ?Pod (or typed out "ApplePod", since the Apple symbol won't show), or ProPod.

If you go to http://www.apple.com/iphone/, its phone capabilities aren't even the first thing mentioned. That's just a subset of what the device does. Calling it a phone doesn't do it justice. The folks at Apple simply weren't thinking if they thought die-hard computer lovers would like Steve Jobs saying that computers are going to be replaced by phones and then promptly taking the word "computers" out of the name of the company. They may have gotten away with it better if they they had called the iPhone something different in my opinion.

It very well may turn out that this gadget will be like the iPod, many people on MR said that would be the most overpriced flop in history but instead it revolutionized technology, much like Jobs thinks this new device will. Reaction has been more tempered here for the iPhone or Apple iPhone or whatever it's called. But I think it will take a while though for this to catch on (even revolutions take a little time!), especially since it's locked to one phone company.

Maybe just me but i'd rather they didn't announce the phone today but rather make a special event for it and release it on the day. They should have have done the tradition iLife/iWork/Leopard pitches today and maybe release the 12" MBP and updated Mac Pros. That'll would have been very ideal. Oh well.......

Jobs should have either done this or else gave SOME mention to the other stuff. I will watch the keynote soon, but it sounds like he basically said. we're not going to talk about the Mac today and didn't talk about Macs, software, or anything besides the Apple TV and the iPhone. He should have at least said something quick like Leopard is coming along and will still be out Spring 2007 and will of course be 10x better than Vista, and other Apple software/product updates are coming soon on the horizon, BUT we've got something much bigger to show you today...

Just noticed that as well - what a crock of crap. Replace the tab for the ENTIRE line of computers with info on a not-even-available cell phone?

Agreed. That's just poor business. Go ahead and hype up your new unreleased product, but don't make it difficult for the users, especially casual or first-time visitors to the site, to find your current products. Sure it lists hardware and software in the line underneath the tabs, but I am increasingly amazed at what the average computer user seems to not be able to see. If it's not prominent, it will be overlooked by some/many.

Kudos to MacRumors for it's excellent coverage of this event. The photos were a great addition.

Yes, Thank you MacRumors!!! I apologize for my bad manners yesterday by not thanking you. I usually thank MR for their coverage, but got caught up in the moment. Great photos and great to have live coverage!
