The big question is why isn't anyone saying anything about this? Surely Logitech/Apple should know what's going on with this keyboard?

Thoughts:
1. They haven’t really been shy at processing refunds/replacements immediately so those who really want the added functionality are able to get it after playing the hardware lottery game.
2. On top of that, there’s no other product that offers what this product does for the 10.5“ iPads (namely native iOS trackpad support) and they wouldn’t necessarily be incentivized to in the absence of any competition.

Is this still the only keyboard + trackpad combo for older iPad Pros, or are there any alternatives in the market?

Update:

Just received my RMA part after two month waiting....
The connection of this new unit seems to be very stable. No disconnecting at all.

Wow that’s quite a time to wait - glad to hear it was worth it!

Still going strong here on my replacement as well after about a months’ worth of usage.

Thank! Your post helped me to make this hard😭 but right decision.
The crazy thing in China is that I can not do a RMA for non-Apple product in a Apple Store even I actually purchased this keyboard from it.

Is this Combo Touch for iPad Air / Pro 10.5" really usable on your lap? I mean the keyboard seems like it has magnetic connection to base unit, so will it really hold well enough not to fall off or disconnect while you are typing when holding it on your lap?

I noticed Logitech has Folio Touch for iPad Pro 11" and it is the similar looking but the keyboard is not removable, so I guess that is more solid?

I've been playing with idea of getting iPad Air or Pro 11" but I have hard time to choose right one. Basically Magic Keyboard would suffice but I hate the feel of it. It just looks and feels cheap to me. Also Logitech seem to offer better protection to base unit, so that is a big plus. But Magic Keyboard definitely seems more suitable for lap use, but then again there is not model for Air and since Logitech version for Pro has solid keyboard connection to base unit, I guess that should not be an issue, unless kick stand is not suitable for lap use.

All experiences and opinions would be nice!

The MacRumors video review states that it is extremely difficult to use this keyboard for the 11" on the lap. The reason is because you need the back stand brace to hold the screen up, and that extends the required depth, meaning in order to have the back brace rest on your knees, you have to pull the keyboard almost right up to your abdomen. This makes typing on it apparently quite awkward and uncomfortable.

Yeah, I saw that but I guess it could work for me as I'm nearly 6 feet long. But I'm mostly concerned if keyboard Combo Touch for Air is strong enough so that iPad will not fall to floor if I move when using it on lap. It seems that Combo Touch has removable keyboard with just magnet holding it on iPad while Folio Touch has keyboard permanently attached to base cover, so it will not come off accidently.

I’m short (5’7), using the combo touch without issues on my lap. I’ve just aggressively jiggled my legs around while typing this as well and the magnets have stayed in place. 😂

Hope that helps.

Thanks. That definitely helps to hear magnet is actually strong enough so that iPad will not drop from lap while typing.

Kickstand will take more room, so I was wondering how close to your stomach keyboard must be in that scenario? I mean do you need to have it so close that keyboard is actually on your crotch (I think that would make typing not so ergonomic as with MacBook that you can keep a bit further away). Not sure how much space in length it would need totally?

Have about a good 6 inches from my waistline, so typing is comfortable. Using the trackpad is a touch cramped. Assuming since you’re taller this will be even less of an issue.

Thanks. That photos with measure definitely helps. I guess it would work for me but need to put that kickstand flap on my knees to get trackpad further away for easier use because it based on 30 cm total lenght would be rather close to my crotch. Not sure I have short legs, I’m nearly 6 feet long and I usually wear pants with 32 inch leg lenght.

By the way, it there any clearance between screen and keyboard when it is closed? Are keys recessed so that they cannot touch the screen? Does it leave any marks on the screen when closed? Is this safe to use without screen protector?

The keys are recessed form the trackpad area so they don’t touch the screen. Haven’t seen any scuffs on my matte protector (which tends to scratch pretty easily compared to tempered glass).

That is good to hear. Is there magnets holding the keyboard against the display when it is closed? And how well it holds, does the keyboard easily move sideways and scuff the screen when it is closed?

I was planning to use it without the screen protector and I will not be using the pencil, but wondering how fragile the screen coating in this model is? I checked several shop demo units and they had pretty badly scuffed screens in all Pro and Air models which all have AR-coating as far as I know. Then standard iPads did not seems to have much all scratches. Is that due to lack of additional AR-coating or what might be the reason for what I saw??

So I ordered Logitech Combo Touch but I'm still on the fence whether it is a keeper.
I'm still waiting for my iPad Air I ordered but it takes a while, so it is a bit hard to test this combination in real use without iPad.

Anyway, the first thing I noticed is that while surface material is definitely much more durable feeling and much less prone to dust or fingerprints than MK, I find that it actually feels quite rough too. Not really unpleasant to use but I was wondering if that will scratch or leave marks on iPad display when it is closed? There are at least palm rest area and a small strip above functions keys touching the iPad screen when closed.

I kind like how keys feel and again their surface material seems better to me. Not sure yet if the keypress is as nice as in MK but not far. Trackpad is quite clicky but I will probably use tap to click anyway.

It is pretty hard to judge how well lap use works with this, but I could estimate a bit already with these parts and it looks possible if the magnet holding the keyboard in smart connector is strong enough. I tried that keyboard magnet against my fridge door and it stuck so hard I had to struggle to get it off. But I guess it is not that strong connection to iPad Air (or is it)?

Also lap use takes much more space compared to MK and display needs to be much further away, making it harder to read but again it is tolerable. I'm considering the fact that I ordered LCT + iPad Air and in case I happened to find MK better I would need to buy iPad Pro instead, that here in EU is nearly +500 euros more, so not sure if it is worth that difference really for me. I'm not using this more that just Safari surfing and some light email or other daily stuff occasionally and listening music (though my AirPods, so iPad speaker quality does not matter to me).

Having back cover with adjustable angles in LCT is a big plus compared to MK where it is only good for keyboard use and offers no protection for iPad itself!

I'd be appreciated any opinions, especially if someone has tried and used both of these, especially lap use.
I have sofa where I can sit my legs stretched straight, so basically I can let kickstand go below my knees to put it far enough for better keyboard position.

Still waiting for my Air 3 to arrive but I already have Logitech Combo Touch here. I have a questions for peoples having this combination for long time and especially those using Air 3 without the screen protector that does the keyboard part leave any marks or scratches on the screen???

I'm asking this because the palm rest area feels pretty rough to me!
It surely looks like fabric but I don't think it is more than some kind of plastic film where this fabric pattern in "pressed" somehow. Just look at the sharp edges, you can see there it looks more like two plastic films melted together, to me it does not look like fabric at all.
It also feels considerably rougher than Apple Magic Keyboard material.

I've seen no evidence that any part of the keyboard/trackpad part of the case makes any contact at all with the screen.

I just looked at photos of the case and it looked like that back cover has pretty deep lip around the screen? Is it actually so deep that even the palm rest area never touch the screen when closed? I think that lip is resting against sharp edge of the keyboard? But I noticed that the sharp edge bends pretty easily, so when holding the case closed I guess it could make keyboard touch the screen then??? Anyway material feels rather rough to me, so wanted to make sure it is 100% safe?
