Consoles are different because they already have good controllers, the main reason people buy third party controllers is because they are cheaper, which of course generally means they are worse than the official ones.

It probably won't be too long before someone comes along with a decent controller as there is a lot of money to be made. It is just a pity we probably won't see one until 2014.

My entire point is that they already have controllers because they know that they needed to make controllers , third party controllers are terrible, everyone knows that I hope. These aren't cheap either, they are both $99.99 LOL I mean seriously $100 for these??? Won't be too long before someone comes along with a decent controller? See this is what makes me sick more so than anything. We are all banking on one of these eventually being good and there will be dozens upon dozens of them and 99-100% of them will be awful just as it is for console third party controllers which IMO are all terrible. It's sickening that the market is cluttered with all of these embarrassingly bad accessories (including cases). I can't wait for the waterproof third party controller hahah. Or the super indestructible third party controller from otter box lol. Apple decided to let third parties make incredibly sad controllers for their devices, oh well. I mean doesn't anyone else think it's sad that there will be dozens of these awful things lol.

Oh and it's hilarious that most (if not all?) of the games still have on screen touch controls even when you are playing with a controller. Lol it's gotta be a joke, like that kind of idiocy is just too good to be true. Yes, great idea, clutter the screen with the awful looking touch controls even when someone is using a controller to play.

If you care about those features that is. Id rather something that fits and looks good and I don't care about anything other than the iPhone 5S so, and I've never used any of my iPhones since the day the first came out in 2007 as anything other than "naked".

Having said that, I won't be buying this or any other game controller as I don't play games on my iOS devices. But a specified device is better than a jack of all trades any day. But you buy whichever you want, I couldn't care less really.
Would you switch your iPhone for a dumb phone without even texting capabilities, a camera, an iPod, a GPS and another "specified device" for each thing you use your phone for?

Sorry, won't shell out 100 dollars for a controller that needs to be replaced next year when the iPhone 6 comes out because its a different size. They need to make these controllers more universal!

"Still"? The first controller EVER has been out for only a few days, and I doubt very many, if any, game developer has had access to it earlier.

Say you made games for iOS, would you really implement a function that you have never tried and have no way of trying and release it to public?

Um that 'still' was as in they still have the touch on the screen not OMG 'still' after months. Secondly if there is an API for third party controllers and many apps implemented it well before any controllers were released, then yes, they should all have the no touch screen controls on the display, it's just sad.

Lol at all the people screaming and crying over a first gen iPhone gaming controller.....

Doesn't take much to rile the group up here

Props for actually getting these to market. We've heard about them for a while - nice to see they are actually working on them. I too would prefer an Apple designed/made iOS game controller, but I have no problem with the form factor or the lightning connector.

Would be nice to have a bluetooth one for gaming on iPhone AND iPad....but you still run into the issue of propping the device up while playing.....still seems like, unless you use a separate stand, you would need a different controller for each.

Give me one of these that collapses and has bluetooth capability so I can either plug my iPhone into it and play, or use it as a bluetooth controller for my iPad. Whoever does this the nicest looking and most solidly built wins.

Yep, agree, this forum is filled with chicken littles, it's getting really annoying actually.

Also agree this is the first and can't wait to see what's yet to come, think there will quite a few duds and only a gem or two (yet to come). As for the BT controller, it's part of the spec (there are three) so we should see some BT connected controllers soon too, ones that don't physically connect to any device, only issue as you say is to prop the iOS device up somehow, but I'm sure there'll be a solution for that.

Fun gaming ahead!

I agree - we'll need to go through a couple before the TRUE "game-changers" emerge (pardon the pun). I get they want each type created, but I'm still looking for one that incorporates the analog sticks, plug-in lightning connector and battery, AND BT. That's the one I'll buy.

An Apple-designed controller would probably be terrible. Just look at Apple's history of input devices, they are almost all bad. I'd rather see Sony or MS make one, though I think that's even less likely.

Patiently waiting for a Bluetooth controller...not going to spend $100 on something that'll be obsolete in 9 months.

Ideally I'd want a standalone controller that can be connected by lightning in addition to Bluetooth but I don't think the standard allows for that.

What's sad is developers who implement these kind of changes untested.

What is the point of this? Great, now I have buttons, but for a game like Dead Trigger what use is that? I now have to awkwardly reach across the 1.5" bezel created by the iPhone home button and the Powershell to aim, making even more difficult to play than before.

This could have easily been solved by one right side analog stick, but it looks like Logitech just wanted to cut corners and end up with a controller just for arcade style games.

I really hope this has iCade support, it would be incredibly stupid if it doesn't given it only has on/off button states and no analog inputs.

The ideal controller should make the iPhone look like the Vita. I really hope these terrible controllers don't kill the market before it has a chance, though.

Might buy one of these to hack it apart into a different form factor...I think it can be improved.

Check out Phonejoy Play. It's collapsible, fits up to the length of the Note III (so at lest the iPad mini should fit in it), BT connectivity...

Pointless buying one really because when the new iPhone comes out if the shape is different and height it not going to worth the money because it would be complete and utter useless

huh? not if you get value out of it. my family is still using 4S and until recently a 4. theyre on 3 year cycles...one can get a lot of value out of two or three years.

not everyone updates annually. few do, actually.

it can't cope with any kind of case.

the thing effectively is a case, so thats not unexpected. a lot of third-party accessories are designed for a naked phone and cannot interoperate w/ other third-party accessories.

Lol you know what's hilarious? iOS devices strictly getting third party pathetic controllers is like if the xbox one and ps4 didn't come with controllers and Microsoft and Sony didn't make them and your only option were third party garbage controllers, seriously can you imagine how many fewer would sell? Apple needs to realize how embarrassing it is to allow their devices to even be attached to one of these third party garbage controllers.

It's nothing like that at all. Apple sell the iOS devices as multimedia tools, not as gaming devices. It's directly comparable to Sony/MS not bundling, I dunno, decent headsets with their consoles; they're something that may make the experience better, but not part of the core draw of the device.

your example is a fail -- Xbox/Playstations *are* gaming consoles, so of course building first-party controllers is essential. iphones *arent* gaming consoles, theyre cell phones (or personal computers), so this sort of auxiliary function is perfect for the third-party market. to use your analogy, it would only be embarrassing if iphones didnt come w/ cameras, or microphones, or an ear piece, etc..cell phone stuff.

No, see, it's okay to upgrade a $600-$800 device every year, but not the accessories you buy for it, I guess?? People, as always, are looking for reasons to criticise, they succeed no matter how illogical or irrational their reasoning.

I'm waiting for the first wave of bluetooth enabled controllers to launch, not least because I'm desperate to use one with my iPad, but also because I'll be tied into my 4S probably until the next iPhone comes out.

Stupid 30-pin socket...

It's not illogical if you upgrade every two years. I upgrade when my subsidy is up. I'm due next year. I sell my old one, unlocked, on ebay, for ~250, and buy the new $299 model. This controller, therefore, costs more than half of what my new iPhone will cost. Not worth it. I'll wait for a bluetooth version (with analog sticks).

Unfortunate naming. I thought it was to do with Microsoft PowerShell!

not really. very, very few people will know or care.

Because third party controllers are absolutely awful and they always have been and always will be. If Apple is too stupid to build one they deserve to have iOS gaming fail and I for one 100% hope it goes no where

ah yes, the biggest, most successful, most profitable tech company in the history of our race is "too stupid" to build a dedicated controller. yeah. either that, or they know its not their core business and defer it to the third-party market as they do for many items.

I don't care for analog sticks, I like old school games.

But again, it seems that Logitech didn't get the memo that the Nintendo D-Pad patent expired in 2005 and that they don't need to continue using this awful disc shaped work-around.

Also, I've seen several instances of those crappy Logitech D-Pads breaking after a few months of use.
