I have mine set on auto to adjust with ambient light. I use it when I'm in my dark bedroom. It is so cool looking with the silver keys. Love it! :)

Yeah it is for use in the dark but like i honestly have never needed it because i touch type and like a bright screen

Why don't you need it again?

These threads are ridiculous.. Really, no one cares that you can touch type. Thankfully Apple thought enough of the tards who can't and appreciate the backlight, as inconceivable as that apparently might be..

I love, and use the backlit keyboard all the time.
its a really handy feature that you only appreciate when you have tried and failed typing in dark environments, i'll ever use a hp again!

I use my laptop in the bedroom with my wife sleeping. I use Nocturne so the screen brightness doesn't keep her up. In that case, there is barely any brightness illuminating the keys.

Wow thanks for mentioning this program. Googled it and installed it, and what a difference it made! Had a killer headache for the last few hours and this program allowed me to keep surfing. Thanks!

Sometimes I surf/work/read in bed at night on the MBP and the backlight allows me to do it without having a light on, which makes my wife happy. I am a good touch typist but there are still other buttons on there that the backlight helps with.

This is one of the few posts that makes sense around here. So for keyboard shortcuts and the other buttons that need to be used that aren't easy to find even if you do know how to type the keyboard is very useful.

Once again, those that don't use the backlit keyboard may have gotten more notebook than they needed.

...apparently the thread starter cares, hence the thread.

Does anyone else notice that the new MBP's keyboard backlight is much dimmer than the previous generation? Does not seem as evenly lit. Can someone post pics of theirs with full keyboard and screen backlight (to make it all even).

Does anyone know how many individual lights there are underneath the keyboard? Or where they are..?

I just got my MBP back from Apple (wine was spilt on it - separate story), and the only problem I've noticed so far is that parts of the keyboard no longer seem to be fully illuminated.

(The lack of backlight makes me realise that yes, I did use/like it)

The backlight is actually a series of optic fibers running the width of the keyboard underneath the keys.

Kind of like those funky things you used to buy at ice hockey games with the handle and the many little whiskers coming out that would change colors all the time.

Ah, that's interesting... Do you know if there's just the one light source then? Perhaps the ends of the fibres just need cleaning...

yes.

I use it all the time. I find the contrast between the black keys and the letters without the backlight to be hard to see under low light conditions ( and with my 10 wpm skills I need it).

I use it whenever it comes on.
To be honest they're times that it's so handy!
But when watching a movie or something on it it's a shame it has to be turned off.... :( oh well

I use it all the time. I am not very good at typing so I actually have to look at the keys. Makes using my laptop in a dark room much easier.

I like it on. Not only when I'm using my Mac in the dark that it lets me see, it looks awesome too.

I game exclusively in the darkest environment I can make for myself (gets me immersed, but terrible for my eyes *sigh*)... so yeah, I use it everytime I game.

As well, I find that I am much more productive with photoshop work under low light conditions, so again I use the backlight there.

Dunno what's so funny about keyboard backlights, but to each his own sense of humor lulz

Just hit F5 until it turns off??

I'm another person that computes when my other half is sleeping; she complains when I'm not in bed when she goes to sleep (all together... Aaaaahhh!)

Backlighting is so useless. I can touch type.

No it's nice to have sometimes in the dark.

anyone know why my late mbp keyboard light wont turn on? when i click the buttons it gives me an (X), what happend? thanks

I don't know about late mbps but on mine it will only let you adjust the keyboard backlight when it is dark enough for you to need it. Try covering your speaker grills then trying to adjust (if that is where the light sensor is)
