I tried swapping mine a few months ago, and after talking to 3 different CS reps, no one knows how to swap these old phones.

Wow, that's cool. And the phone will have a fresh back cover and all that? How do you go about doing this? Just go to an Apple store or what?

I am also very curious about this. I have one that is in "decent" condition, that I would love to replace :)

I've never heard of anyone calling but you might try that. Most people go to the apple store. Just tell them you want the battery replaced and the will just swap it out for 79.

I wish I still had mine. I remember when 4GB & 8GB was a lot. :)

Which is why these unlimited data plans are so important. Pictures, videos, audio, and other files are only going to get larger and take more data to load. People going down to 2gb will be an issue in the near future. I know are referencing storage, but the concept is the same.

+1 still have it. First is worth collecting, smallest # units released, still millions, but in 30 years, who knows.

i know someone selling 1 in mint condition on clist. Do you think 100 bucks is worth it?

Is $100 worth a 5 year old phone? Only if you are a collector and only need the phone part of it. EDGE is miserable.

aww, it does look nice. I am probably the only one but I absolutely hated my original iPhone. It was always getting stuck and not letting me end calls, etc. I had to get rid of it. I know Apple still has issues whenever they release a new one (obviously) but I definitely think they have gotten much better. :)

Brings back memories.
Couldnt stand to use it though now that Im spoiled with the newer, faster, better iphones:D

Just cover the last row of icons on the iPhone 5 with your finger and you get to relive the first generation iPhone all over again. :apple:

I still use mine as an iPod, so if I could get it replaced for $79, I most definitely would. It's such a sexy looking piece of hardware :)

I'll go to the apple store this weekend and let you know. If not, hopefully they could just order me one.

I still have mine, actually every one of my phones are sitting in a row and my 5 writing this. Do love the original.

I still have one :) It is slightly scratched on the back but everything is working great. My dad is currently using it with an alternative firmware mimicking iOS4 functions (Whited00r) and it makes it faster. It is the most solid iPhone so far..

It's been a year or so since I ran into this, but last time I checked at&t was still honoring the unlimited data plan + 200 SMS messages for $20. I'm not sure if that's a contractual obligation with Apple or what, but there was also talk of using the 1st gen iPhones as a loophole to obtain a new at&t unlimited data plan.

I'd love to get an update if anyone else has done this more recently . . .

yeah at&t closed the unlimited data loophole about a year ago and i would be curious what happens when you use the 1st gen now.. i had heard that the plan no longer exists

Man, that's a shame. I guess I'm out of the loop. I may call at&t to inquire, just for fun. I'll report back . . .
