Rear TouchID would have been soooo useful in this post pandemic, masked world.

The only place where the fingerprint scanner makes sense is the POWER BUTTON. You press to turn it on and it scans your fingerprint at the same time to unlock.

Only Sony does this and Samsung did it ONCE with the S10e. Every other phone manufacturer has been a moron about it.
The surface area of the a smartphone's power button is too narrow to scan almost all of a finger tip.

Touch ID, USB C and Headphone Jack are the most emotional pain points for Power Users.

I wonder if an iPhone exists with all 3 in another timeline of Apple multiverse.

In fact the Macbooks have all 3 but not even an iPad has them.
don’t forget the camera bump

5 years later..c'mon, Apple can add the fingerprint unlock into the back phone Logo.
OR...like others, in screen fingerprint unlock, or power button ID I guess.

Whatever the case, I miss it!

One difference between Steve Jobs and Tim Cook. Steve Jobs, when realizing he'd made a mistake, would go out of his way to not only fix a problem, but fix it better. Tim Cook just doubles down on the same non-working solution that he owns.

Just admit Face ID doesn't work well in a Post COVID world now with Mask Mandates and SOLVE the problem at hand rather being stubborn in your original idea. The paradigm has shifted. Only Tim Cook has resisted adapting. Touch ID is not ancient tech. We didn't ditch the wheel when planes were invented. I actually love the idea of the the TouchID in the Apple logo.
Preach on, brother (or sister - I don't know your gender)!!!

It would be awesome to work in Apple's R&D lab and get to lay eyes on all of the prototypes that never make it to market.

I feel like 5-10 years ago, Apple could have easily been working on a design like this as part of an initiative to make the screen bigger. In parallel, there were other teams working on FaceID and the rounded screen corners. At the time this concept was made, it could have clearly been rejected as premature / not finished. Instead, it took the convergence of many separate R&D tracks coming together into the iPhone X that created something they were willing to release. It seems quite paranoid to interpret an internal prototype as an intentional leak meant to deceive and misdirect, when you could easily attribute it to a natural and necessary part of Apple's design process.

It would be too narrow to provide a more robust Touch ID implementation.
LOL, whatever. Do you work for Apple or something? Why are you pretending to know that Apple couldn't implement Touch ID into the power button?

I guess you haven't seen the news about what's included in the iOS 15.4 betas: Testing iOS 15.4's New Face ID With a Mask Feature

Much less what was included in iOS 14.5: iOS 14.5: How to Mask Unlock Your iPhone With Apple ...https://www.macrumors.com › how-to › unlock-iphone...

For me personally, FaceID works great. So much so that I'm kindof perplexed to read your comment and would be curious to understand the issue you're experiencing.

The Apple logo should be a heat sink for the CPU, that way cases can extend the cooling capabilities.
Nope, instead we get the darkening of the screen annoyance during sunny days.

I would take an iPad Air style power button Touch ID over Face ID any day of the week. Face ID doesn't have the range and is badly placed on my 2021 iPad Pro. My iPhone 12 (mini) is horrendously clumsy for using Apple Pay at point of sale.

Except for people who keep their phones in durable shock-resistant cases, like the Otterbox Defender case.
Even if it’s not a durable shock-resistant case, it wouldn’t even read through a paper thin case because physical contact is required. With MagSafe here and likely to stay, a back reader is pretty far out of the equation.

Just curious, is there any reason for the wavy inner surface of the shell?
Machining most likely.

I am not so interested in updating my phone, without a fingerprint scanner. If Apple doesn't put one in, I guess I may have to change manufactures. I really don't care for FaceID. I think it blows for security login. When I got my iPhone X, touch ID was the first thing i missed.

If it must’ve be added to the back it has to be in the Apple logo. I’ve had rear-mounted scanners and I think they look bad and they aren’t where I naturally rest my fingers. Even this one looks horrible and the front looks like it’s straight out of the Samsung factory at that time. I would munch prefer in-screen or power button versions of it. The Pixel 6 Pro and Fold 3 versions of either have worked near-perfect for me.

Yeah I'm not surprised Apple went with FaceID instead. This feels too much like what an Android phone would do.
Is that a valid reason to make a choice? "If Android does it, we won't do it, even if it works better." ;-)

As for the comments concerning how it looks, it's not like the back of any phone is a work of art with those off-center cameras and all. I'd put practicality ahead of aesthetics any day.

LG did the rear fingerprint reader and it was the best design of any device for this. It was exactly where you wanted it, not awkward, and gave room for more display. I wonder if Apple hadn't moved to Face ID if they would have moved this way or been to stubborn because LG did it first. I preferred this over my Samsung with the reader under the display just for the great ergonomics of it.

Only on an iPhone. Most (possibly all... ) Android phones the fingerprint sensor turns the phone on without needing to touch the power button. Wondering if that might not be baked into the OS because I can't think of any that don't do this.

The rear fingerprint scanner is the best option. For those of you that have used one on an android phone, you know what I'm talking about it. It's natural, fast, and looks great.
